I know the enemy you're talking about but I don't think so. I've been reading the item descriptions for everything and don't recall him being mentioned.

It took me 8 bosses to finally kill one on the first attempt. It took 11 damn attempts to beat VotBV, which I can't explain at all.

Spoiler-less midpoint semi-review:

I know DS 1 & 2 are 50-70 hour adventures, but I'm stunned that they pulled this off again with DS3 just a year after Bloodborne. I'm 30 hours deep and, having had the total boss count spoiled for me, I'm only roughly halfway.

The game rules, I honestly didn't think it would be so good. The world is fascinating; I'm constantly admiring how beautiful it looks and analysing the geography to get a sense of how far I've come. I was initially surprised by what I mistook for linearity, but instead of the sprawl of the other games, DS3 has more of a main path with a lot of small looping branches and a few huge non-looping ones along the way (huge as in wholly unique areas with their own bosses huge), like Bloodborne on a bigger scale.

It has Dark Souls' penchant for hiding massive stuff in easily missable places; I would've skipped past a HUGE optional area if not for a helpful message left by a player. Seeking out secrets this grandly conceived is just unparalleled outside of this series. Dark Souls (1 & 3) learned from NES Zelda's obscure secrets -- Miyamoto expected kids to figure them out by sharing their knowledge on the playground; in Dark Souls, you share messages with other adventurers.

(Also I prolly would've found the hidden area myself eventually. It's not like Ash Lake level hidden.)

The bosses so far are exquisite aesthetic designs. Though I've sucked against almost all of them, I have to say they feel a bit easier than usual, but still challenging enough that I've never felt assured of winning. The difference is pretty trivial... It's just that the game doesn't have a "fuck you" difficulty spike boss like Gascoigne or the Belfry Gargoyles. I'm keeping a tally of all my deaths against bosses: with 9 defeated, I've died 40 times. So it's no picnic, and they're a blast to fight.

The lore owns balls, I can't wait to watch some Youtube video explaining what the story is. The tie-ins to past lore... I'm so glad I avoided info on the game in this respect. It's not as tightly refined as Bloodborne, but it paints a hell of a compelling world. It also has Dark Souls' knack for a poignant line of writing here and there. Honestly I haven't taken time to think about it. It owns balls though, of that much I'm sure.

GOTY.

I'm definitely more at home with Dark Souls than Bloodborne. I had a lot of problems with the bosses of BB, to the point of almost quitting the game from frustration. So far my only deaths against boss has been because I got impatient and started wildly swinging. Only 3 bosses in so far though.

Bloodborne easily has the hardest bosses of the bunch though, for a first playthrough. I'd say it's the least accessible game in difficulty terms.

I'm assuming you follow the unwritten rule of not bringing phantoms into boss fights? I'd feel dirty doing it on a first playthrough. It's weird getting summoned by players who always enter boss fights with three phantoms. It's fun, but it changes the dynamic of the fight so that you basically just hack away while the boss is targeting someone else before running away and waiting for the next opportunity. It's just a slash fest and the host player misses out on the proper dance.

This game may have the hardest boss in the series. It's the last optional boss. I'd consider myself levelled up to early NG+ levels and my attacks don't do piss to it, and the intensity is unrelenting because you need to be so precise with dodging, and you need to dodge often, and for a long time. It's the only thing left for me to do before completing the final stretch of the game, but it might take a while.

Yeah I try not to summon for boss fights, although I don't let it hamper my enjoyment or progress. For Bloodborne I summoned for Vicar Amelia and the wizard boss guy cause they were fucking bullshit.

Hot tip: the best item to have when you're invading/invaded is undead hunter charms so your opponents can't keep retreating and drinking Estus (while you still can!)

I was dicking around in New Game + and found out you can technically access the last major area at the start of the game, but to do it you have to defeat a boss that would probably one-hit kill a new character and take forever to kill.

The area after the fight against PS is a massive fightclub filled with invaders, area specific invaders, phantoms and mad spirits. I just arrived there in New Game + and had a massive brawl involving six people in an arena. I don't ever wanna continue past this point, it's so fun being the host because the invasions never stop if you hang around.

I didn't mind him once I figured out how to dodge his attacks. The second phase is hard though.

Walking into Irythyll was one of my favourite moments. Looks stunning.

Yeah it's probably my favourite area so far, although I really liked The Smouldering Lake. It's what Lost Izalith should've been in Dark Souls 1. The bosses that seem to get me are the ones with strange timing on their attacks. I big overhead slash from the Pontiff gets me almost every time, and I just could not dodge the Demon King's overhead hammer smash.

I'm also kind of disappointed that I've fallen into using the katana yet again. I've used it for every Souls game regardless of my build. It's just so much better than any other weapon. I thought I'd try out sorcery for once but it's no good. I have 25 intelligence and my spells barely do any more damage than my sword attacks, not to mention how long it takes to cast.
