It had better come out on the Wii U. I wonder why Nintendo would do that though, since I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who would've bought a Wii at launch if Zelda was exclusive to it, and ditto with the NX. |

Probably same reason they did it for the Game Cube. To appease the current system owners and to entice those who didn't buy a Wii U with a great new IP. I'm really curious to see/hear more about the NX. I really hope there's a way of transporting digital purchases across to the NX as I've purchased a bunch of SNES/N64 games on the Wii U that I'd like to see transported across to the NX. I like my Wii U a lot, it's a good console, but any replacement console is going to have to work hard to find a space in my entertainment system. |

Either the part they decided to show wasn't very good or this game is going to be pretty mediocre. |

I'm not sure on that. The level design looks a little bland, in terms of brown rock structures and that's about it. (Edit: Just remembered that is a Hell level and there is more to the game) However the level layout looks pretty decent and somewhat complex. It could be a good bit of fun running and jumping around these areas and shooting dudes. Looked like an Unreal Tournament style arena, I could be into that. At first the music sounded sorta generic and typical action game hard rock, but it actually amps up at times and changes a bit. I ended up liking it towards the end of the video. It didn't look fantastic, but to me it looked better than mediocre. I'm very cautiously optimistic about this game, I hope it turns out well but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be pretty meh. Edited by Twisted, May 1 2016, 12:21 PM.

To concisely explain why it looks mediocre to me I can only really say that I got really bored just watching it, not much that I saw really excited me. It's a huge step up from DOOM 3, for sure, but this particular bit of footage didn't look all that fun to me or what I'm really after from DOOM. What's actually going on in this footage, anyway? He goes through a green portal and appears to just be fighting waves of enemies on what could almost pass for a multiplayer map. I thought it really dragged on, though this may have been exaggerated by the player dying and starting again. I can't say I'm a fan of the music at all, really. I don't like the wub wub influence, it doesn't fit for me. It reeks of corporate influence market research shit. DOOM soundtracks will always be about metal and ambient. The game also looks considerably slower than proper DOOM, but the player is clearly using a cunt roller so it might just look even worse than it actually is. Why do they demonstrate shooters that are releasing on PC with a controller, anyway? Do people get intimidated by accurate aiming or something? I'm not trying to shit on console users, but it just makes your game look so much more clumsy than it would with a mouse, isn't the point to show the game at it's best? Anyway, the best way I can describe it is that footage looks like a somewhat typical 2016 shooter wearing a DOOM skin. The cynic in me says that the game is only better looking than DOOM 3 purely out of coincidence that this is the flavour the shooter market is in right now. Still, it's not really there for me; I want maze levels, exploration, actual puzzles and keycards (or skulls for the hell levels), which is probably an unrealistic expectation when they're trying to bite the battlefield, CoD and Halo audience. It just looks like a pretty middling game to me. I do appreciate that they've gone for the Brutal DOOM flavour, and I like the jumping (which seems like a natural evolution to go hand in hand with DOOM's traditional speed). I can understand where you're coming from. I agree that there didn't seem to be a whole lot going on aside from shooting dudes. Hopefully that was just this one part of one level. I can dig the idea of MP style map areas in an SP level, but not if it's the whole game. I'm sure there would be a bit of variety there. The movement speed is definitely slower but that may be a trade off for jumping. I'm sure there will be a lot of Doom loyalists who will hate on this game for having a jump, but it makes sense to have it. I don't know if games moved away from the keycards system for a reason though. I think you have to be really careful with some of the antiquated systems of these games and choose wisely which ones you take and which ones you leave in the past. I just don't know if keys will fit with the wider audience. I personally would like that. Rise of the Triad 2013 had keys and that was a solid game. It had other issues but the keys weren't one of them. I think it looks decent but I'm still wary of it because I didn't particularly love that Shadow Warrior game from a few years back. It was good, but something about it never quite clicked with me. This reminds me a lot of that. It's also a reason why I haven't played that new Wolfenstein game. I fear that it won't click with me and I'll get kinda bored of it like I did with Shadow Warrior. I'm still all for the classic shooter resurgence. They're bringing back things that didn't need to go away for good. I just need one that will resonate with me and will be as fun to play as those old games. I'm hoping Doom can do that. Perhaps they demonstrated it using a controller because that's what the majority of the people who buy the game will use? |

Of course, and in that context it's at least honest. I just find that to be quite inconsistent with general preview practices and the careful cherry picking that usually goes on, as well as the straight up dishonesty (bullshots, gameplay previews before graphical downgrades etc). I just think they're missing an opportunity with it, especially since it's not dishonest. Why not showcase the best version of the game? Hell, it's the same game, just demonstrate it using a control scheme that isn't shit. I felt the same way about Shadow Warrior, Twisted. It's a game I should've really enjoyed on paper but something about it made me not enjoy it all that much. The only specific thing I can point to that I wasn't super fond of was all of the upgrade / unlock stuff. I agree that you have to be careful with what you bring back from the past, there's a lot of modern sensibilities that we take for granted. However, I think Doom's core tenets of exploration, puzzling and fast paced gunplay are all fun today. Keys aren't absolutely necessary but I think they're a pretty acceptable thing to build puzzles and level progression around, with the added bonus of a degree of familiarity. I'd ideally probably want earlier levels to be key based but the game progress into some kind of new puzzle structure. Wolfenstein is competent enough but it's quite overrated. You're not missing anything special, pick it up real cheap if you can find it, but if you never get around to it don't feel like you've missed a great game. It uses that idtech texture streaming bullshit, so it sucks ass on the technical side of things and runs far from optimally. As a game, the gunplay is pretty enjoyable, the weapons feel fairly beefy and satisfying to use. The missions are kinda inconsistent in quality, though. The alternate history stuff is pretty cool, and the game can be quite cinematic at times, but the story is quite bad. I normally wouldn't care but I only mention this because I went in expecting a good story, because that's what people were saying. Spoiler; people are dummies. The Battlefield account on Facebook has been sharing a lot of Bad Company 2 videos in the lead up to the announcement of the next game on the 6th. If it's Bad Company 3 that's announced, well... I'll be damn excited about that. I couldn't tell you specifically why Bad Company 2 was a better experience than Battlefield 3 and 4, but it is. Maybe because the Rush maps felt genuinely different compared to the conquest maps? Maybe because when you played through the levels it felt like you were actually progressing through a world rather than the same bland buildings. Some of the videos (which are fan made videos I should add) focus on the destruction of the buildings - something which I think both Battlefield 3 and 4 lacked. The ability to raze a building entirely was one of the best things about Bad Company 2 - whereas in Battlefield 3 and 4 it was all about fucking leveloution which only seemed to destroy one or two buildings. |

I'm quite looking forward to that. I watched a video of someone playing it earlier this year and they compared it to Rocket League - not, obviously, in the sense that it's a competitive game, but more that it's a game that'll surprise everyone as being a sleeper hit. |

This does a better job of showing off the game's strong points, and just giving better context for that Hell portion that we were shown. I'm upgrading my pre-release rating from mediocre to decent. It looks OK. |
