Gaming Keyboard Recommendations

I've been using a HP Elite keyboard for a while now, but wouldn't mind trying out a mechanical gaming keyboard. After a little research, I'm eyeing off the Cougar 700K. However, I thought I'd see if anyone here has had experience with mechanical keyboards and can provide some recommendations and/or tips on the different types (e.g., MX red, black, blue, etc.)

I have a cherry mx blue keyboard which feel pretty damn nice for typing, though they're not necessarily the best choice for games, especially WASD type stuff (I think they're nice for hotkey games). They're also quite loud. Brown switches are seen as the safe middle ground that are a solid choice for all around usage. I personally find Red really appealing since they're so smooth, soft and quiet.

For the feel of the keyboard I'd recommend finding a PC parts store near you that has the sampler board thing. It has all the different colors and soft/click so you can tell the difference. They are noticeably different however, unless you're really REALLY into using your keyboard it's most likely not something you'll notice after you get used to it anyway (between the diff types of mechanical I mean)

That Cougar has an aluminium base which is the same as my Corsair K95. The weight is nice and it gives the whole thing a really lovely "solid" feel however it does make the keypresses a little louder than other KBs. Good to note if you're using it in a place where sound matters or if you use a headset when gaming.

Another cool feature of that one is that it doesn't appear to have any ridges on the side. Again, similar to the K95 this is great for cleaning as you can jkust blow air down the side and all the stuff slides out with catching.

Another thing to check online is how much the keys wear. I've found Logitech and Razr to be terrible with wear and tear. Not normally a big issue it can be annoying when playing in the dark as the backlit keys become very bright and annoying.

I think Randall bought a cougar keyboard, head over to facebook if you want ot ask him.

I use a Razer Chroma coz I'm a sucker for pretty colours. It's my first mechanical keyboard and I love it. It is quite loud tho

Thanks for the tips, all. I might try to find a place with a sampler board to see which switch I prefer before making a final decision.

The pretty colours of the Chroma are quite appealing :) As for reaching out to Randall on Facebook, these forums are about the extent of my social media usage these days. Thanks though.

No worries. From what I understand he loves it. I found it odd, simply because it has no resistance and you can't feel the point of actuation. Testing first is always a good idea, I was lucky enough to get my keyboard as a present so I can't complain :)

I was just passing by when I heard my name :P The Cougar 700K is great. It has a bunch of features I was after: choice of Cherry MX colour (I chose red), macro keys, on-the-fly macro recording, dedicated media buttons, and individually lit keys.

It only comes with orange backlighting, which was not my first choice, but it's fine. I was leaning towards Cherry MX Blues, but I ended up getting Reds because I seem to hover over the actuation point when using the WASD keys. Blues can misfire with this play-style because they have to reset their position after the key has been actuated. Having said that, Reds can be difficult to type on if you're not accurate with your keystrokes. While the Reds don't 'click' like the Blues, they still 'clack' when bottoming out. If you're a hard typer, the Reds can be very loud.

The split spacebar is great. My thumb can easily reach both sides without moving from the WASD position. I do miss having a big spacebar to whack when playing/pausing video though! It's also worth mentioning that the volume and mute keys have to be pressed pretty hard.

Overall, I love the 700K; but if my PC was used for anything other than games, I would definitely have chosen the blue switches.

Awesome, thanks. I liked the feel of the blue switches so I opted for them. I managed to get a Cougar 700k delivered for $178 from Gamedude Computers in Springwood QLD. I've purchased from them in the past and was quite happy with their service and price. Thanks for the help, everyone!
