How is it that EB Games can still sell games for $99.95 and not go bankrupt? That's their price for Fallout 4 while JB Hi-Fi was selling pre-orders for $59. You'd think they'd lose so much money to the competition, but they keeping chugging along with their ridiculous prices.

EB games usually caters to soccer mums who drive SUV's around the burbs and tend to be on the wealthier side of the fence and when doing the weekend groceries with the 2.6 children at the local shopping centre. To stop the kids complaining they will allow them entry into EB, the kids will put on a show when in the store that they want GTA5, clueless mum purchases to shut them up and so she can potentially get some free time not parenting them during the weekend.

Ironically its the same mum who eventually blames video games for being overly violent and gets games banned, not realising that she is the stupid bitch for buying a mature game for a 7 year old boy. Process is similar with next soccer mum who lives 3 houses down the street from first soccer mum, EB gets rich.

Lets assume that both JB and EB buy the game wholesale for $50. Then JB is making $9 per sale, and EB is making $49 per sale. Even if JB is selling 5 times as many copies, EB would still be ahead.

They have exclusive deals with publishers. Then sell games at a premium price ($99) to tempt people into trading in their games so that the $99 package with exclusive retail content acquired with the retail/publisher relationship becomes affordable. Then EB sells the said traded in game to its broad market to get the full profit of the sale without publisher royalty from new game purchases (since the royalty has already been paid for with the new game purchase).

This model isnt some soccer mum/Apple thing, either, though they are likely the ones buying games straight up at $99. Plenty of gamers still buy into this model because they:

a) Just window shop and EB is convenient for them as they're practically everywhere
b) Dont care if it's new or used. They just want to buy the game retail at a cheap price
c) Easily tricked by videogame marketing and buy into hype by lolpreordering a game

Which is fine for JB because they're a general electronics/entertainment store. Where simply having that person enter to buy a game benefits JB as they're likely to buy something else that they might need. While that person may be a smart consumer when it comes to videogames, they'll walk right into inflated prices for Consumer Electronics.

Ah, I see.

On a related note, I had the irresistible urge to buy and preload the game tonight because I'm impulsive and would waste $40 like that, but thankfully Sony are being dicks like they were with Bloodborne and still haven't made the preload available even though the game's out in 3 hours. There are people bitching about it on the Internet. I'm glad I checked first.

Don't forget as well that EB price match so people would go there to price match the game. EB then work on the idea that people would buy other things whilst in store - disc protection, a pop vinyl figure, play guide.

Reviews are saying it's closer in tone to F3 than NV and frustratingly buggy even by Bethesda standards. Hardly a dealbreaker for me but I might wait a bit until they patch it.

I've heard people say this, but is it actually true? Before selling games, JB seemed to be using the same "large range, cheap prices" strategy for music and then movies. If their games section wasn't self sufficient, would they really dedicate floor space to it?

Some customers might decide to also purchase a higher margin product at the same time, but most people I've seen in line just seem to be buying the basics (albums, DVDs/Blurays, or games).

This is what I think happens too. Add their exclusive CEs and a well known price match and 7 day return policy and they're easily perceived as a decent option for consumers. Wonder how they would have fared if that move to stop second hand game trade had succeeded.

On that note I still don't understand why people trade their games. Sometimes people get ridiculously small amounts but they still trade them in! Same reason people trade in cars I suppose - convenience/laziness.

I pre-ordered the Pipboy edition for PC and am looking forward to seeing what that is like. Probably won't play the game for a while though as I'll be picking it up alongside StarCraft II's third part.
