I haven't finished it (not even close, I'm 15 or 16 main missions in) but I thought I heard that the ending isn't it and it's going to be expanded upon in DLC or something. |

The actual ending is there, but a mission that tied up a major plot thread was removed. The ending itself appears unannounced in your mission list and is very poorly edited. Chapter 2, which is roughly the last quarter of the game, is blatantly unfinished. Konami must have put their foot down and demanded the assets on hand be thrown together into something workable, so there are a bunch of recycled challenge missions, some new missions that feel skeletal, and a couple of good missions. There are a bunch of other plot threads that remain unresolved. What cutscenes are there seem unaffected. You get the sense of a much grander project that didn't come to fruition. As someone who doesn't know the lore that well, I was thinking are the plot points unfinished or do they lead into the other games? |

That's partially true, but there were a few stories specific to Phantom Pain that needed to be resolved, namely Spoiler: click to toggle It's not that there's an irredeemable lack of detail between MGSV and the chronological sequels, but it created stories of its own and didn't finish them, so the endings work as a nod-and-wink at what's to follow, but aren't satisfying by themselves. It's hard to care about what we lost in Kojima's firing when the story is such a blatant turd anyway. It doesn't have much going for it except good action scenes and a few choice moments. There's also Huey, a morally complex character, the only one with noticeable internal life, a guy emotionally compromised by his ethics (even to his detriment) who's also a pathological liar... I don't know if it's a result of scenes being cut, but I like how you never definitively learn what he's about, and he's the only character that sparks some drama into the proceedings. That kind of melodrama is what's missing from MGSV. The previous games are hammy soap operas. MGSV is just plot, half-baked philosophy and military machismo. Characters are paper-thin. Ocelot has the most lines but is completely superfluous, Snake barely talks, Miller is Revenge, Skull Face is MGS' obligatory villain with Big Ideas, Quiet is Gamergate Fodder. I love the gameplay. I just wish the story was a big, passionate, silly and occasionally clever and poignant one like the others. |

Wow, it doesn't seem like MGSV is even half as great as most of the reviews paint it as. I had an impression of this sublime, surreal experience that puts every other game to shame. Now that the hype has settled down, it sounds barely better than MGS 4, which was, frankly, often downright awful. So awful, in fact, that the seeming downplaying or removal of the soapy melodramatic nonsense and toilet humour that pretty much destroyed that game actually seems like a wise choice. What I'm interested in though - does it have any surreal gameplay parts on the level of naked Raiden from MGS2 or any meta-weirdness that makes you think you're experiencing a glitch when it's really just an oddly inspired gameplay bit? Those parts are what I remember most fondly about the first two games. |

I don't think so. There's nothing along the lines of MGS2's ending or Psycho Mantis in MGS1. There is one thing, but it's a side thing you're unlikely to come across. It does have toilet humour. I can't recommend the gameplay enough. The stealth is exhilarating stuff. Edited by Moo, Sep 26 2015, 12:57 AM.

Man, this game is long! That or I'm playing at an extremely slow pace (or both). I'm 42 hours in and only up to the 21st main mission. I do think I've been doing quite a lot of side ops, though, so that's likely the cause of it. The gameplay is very good though, I'm enjoying it, but I'm feeling a bit burnt out on it for the moment so I'm going to take a break from it and come back a little later. Going to return to Witcher 3 to get the proper ending I wanted. |

Yeah, the stealth is really great. It's up there with the greats: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Thief 2, Mark of the Ninja and Hitman: Blood Money. The biggest change from previous MGS games is that it's rather strict and you're playing within the environment. MGS stealth has always suffered as a game where you're pretty focused on the UI, with the alert timers and minimap. It makes the game just feel so much more tense than the previous games. |

Mission 29... man, this just sucks. I really don't think straight up combat belongs in this game. The mechanics don't seem optimised for it, and the game doesn't really give anywhere near as much incentive to develop deadly weapons as it does stealth gear and non-lethals. It's funny because I was watching a total-biscuit video about the merits of "skip combat" or "skip level" functionality in gaming, with his argument being that while it goes against traditional gaming mentality it's just ultimately more control for the consumer to experience media how they want to, and it would allow players to skip the crappy filler parts of games. And honestly, yeah, I would skip the fuck out of this mission if that was a standard option. |

I assume that's the boss fight at the airstrip? It's quite lame. I had to use some dodgy tactics to beat it: Spoiler: click to toggle It feels like they made the general fight but hadn't included any variety like they usually do in MGS boss fights.

Yeah that's the one. I'm thankful the internet exists, certainly helps in cases like this. I looked it up and was advised to use D-Walker. It was extremely effective, overly easy if anything. The gatling gun absolutely shreds them to bits with heaps of ammo to spare. |
