I didn't understand what was funny about that video until I realized the music was in-game. That's awesome. |

Can you set your own music for the chopper or something? |

Spent quite some time so far to give a pretty good impression, but the game still says 15% complete :c. The game has a strange rhythm that’s not like previous MGS games, which were a little more linear. You spend a lot of time sitting in that chopper before a mission, after a mission to head to Motherbase, then waiting to get on and off. The stop-start feeling of it all gives it some natural pacing. Once you're in the field, the game is exceptional. The missions are impressive. And it’s due to how well the emergent gameplay ecosystem works, with its mechanics, interactions and strong AI. Most of them are variations on a basic theme of "Destroy this target" or "Extract/Eliminate this person", but I haven't gotten sick of those variations yet. The content is just so dense and challenging. You come across a strong hold where your objective is in, then all of a sudden that open world shrinks down to a tense series of engagements, with a whole lot of vertical flexibility. Even if your mission goal is similar to a previous one, the means of playing it out and the ridiculous amount of variables always ensures a unique experience. More often that not, the game will throw you a curveball out of nowhere, leading to some really memorable moments that create emergent stories through gameplay that far exceeds whatever absurd nonsense Kojima could have ever directed or written. I also dig the story direction for the most part. The cutscenes are vague in detail, but there's an understated nature to them. I like how it's almost entirely up to you on how you want to digest and structure the narrative through the cassette tapes, it just suits the open world construct so well. As for the motherbase management, I just got the ability to send out people I've recruited on missions, which can be accessed anywhere via menu. It's reminiscent of AC brotherhood or DA:I's awful wartable, but I like that some of it has some impact on the field, like cutting equipment supply lines so that Patrols wont have access to helmets that prevent headshots. But in general, the base itself is pretty cold, empty and not as engaging as the interface of developing research projects and staff management that you interact with. The layer seems quite rich enough in giving you a sense of consistent progression that flows along with the action and I feel like I've only scratched the surface of the tools, weapons and upgrades at my disposal. I agree with the variables making similar missions very different experiences. I've had two missions occur in the same location that were nothing alike, right down to accessing the area from different points. The game's got the experience-as-story thing on lock (which is probably part of the reason why Snake rarely talks), and yet I would like a bit of Kojima's absurd nonsense, something more substantial than horse poop and cardboard boxes. Outside of the opening the game's tone is a bit too serious. I hope some zany villains are in the mix soon. I haven't had a single boss fight yet. I'm about 8% through (I hear the main story can end as early as the mid-30s, though that might have been a reviewer who rushed through the game). |

OH, and this game kicks the crap out of Assassin's Creed when it comes to your arsenal. AC has a cluttered mess of weapons and gadgets, half of which you never use after their tutorial, but I feel like I'm getting a shiny new toy whenever I unlock something in MGS5. |

I encountered one boss fight. It just happened out in the world as I was heading to a side op. It didnt have the typical Boss monologue or exchange. But the events that unfolded after was some good old Metal Gear. I like how the upgrades are actually meaningful from a gameplay aspect. But some do seem to tread the boring more ammo or more damage upgrades. It's unlocking at a nice pace that isnt overwhelming or slowly drip fed. It's just enough to give you enough time to experiment. But I'm kinda disappointed with the weapon arsenal, not that they dont diversify gameplay with the usual weapon types. It's just that I dont see myself using anything without a suppressor or even a weapon that is lethal. |

Funny you say that. I've planned my weapon developments purely around the guns that come with a silencer. Still using the starting rifle, have a silenced Sniper now and still using the tranq pistol (tried the non lethal SMG for a while but I found the suppressor wasn't lasting long enough). I am using a mix of lethal and non lethal weapons, mainly because the only non lethal rifle I have doesn't have a suppressor. I just got to a second country so things are changing a bit atm, but I was thinking of heading back to some older missions and ticking off the tasks I haven't done and the people with skills I haven't collected. |

Quiet: Spoiler: click to toggle Just an excellent fight that reminded me how intuitive MGS can be on this front. I might play Snake Eater again after this. Those boob shots in the following cutscenes were shamelessly gratuitous, but those scenes along with the scenes and events in the "Important Side-Op" had the series' signature style. Snake even said a couple of things! I'm still weirded out by how little he talks, since he's already an established character. He was never really the stoic type but a guy who likes to talk about philosophy and guns and movies in-between all the killing, so the change is jarring. As regards the character Keifer Sutherland voices at the start who isn't Snake, my theory is that Spoiler: click to toggle

There are at least 42 episodes? I've only completed episode 14 (an early Zaire mission) and thought I must be about halfway through the main game. |
