So I just played Ground Zeroes. Not bad, but I'm glad I didn't pay for it. It's criminally short. Pretty enjoyable but it felt fairly shallow and basic compared to 4, obviously there'll be lots of stuff in V that wasn't in ground zeroes, so basically I'm just looking forward to sinking my teeth into that. THERE WASN'T EVEN A FUCKING BOX.

It runs quite well and looks pretty decent, but the night time setting they went for definitely masked a bit of lacking detail in the tiny setting of this prologue. It didn't look as good in the daytime.

My biggest complaint in Ground Zeroes was that you couldnt use your binoculars behind cover sounds pretty simple, but it was unusually annoying. You can supposedly do in MGSV. I hope they dont put interesting bits of side stories hidden away within collectibles like it did, with Chico's tapes.

Other than that, the PC version when played with KB/M controls seems to break the balance abit, you can easily just run and gun things down with ease if you wanted, will probably end up playing on a harder difficulty for the full game.

Also, forgot this video, was pretty much the presentation that first got me excited for this.

I played ground zeroes with a controller because the menus and idroid just felt poorly designed for kbam. No mouse control? Pfff. If the full game doesn't have those issues I'll play with kbam.

Using binoculars from cover would actually be quite nice, it did feel clumsy at times not having that option.

Also I'm not buying MGS5 until I've had the chance to play MGS4. That said I'll probably get impatient and buy it anyway.
I didn't even make it past the first day... The hype train was too much to resist. Every reviewer is gushing like crazy. I heard about one minor thing you can do that I'll put in a spoiler that basically tipped me over the edge. I'm downloading it tonight and playing Ground Zeroes, which I've had since it was free on PS+ a while back.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I wish I could honestly give a shit about this series, but it's not happening. No siree. Good luck to those who love it.

Can I also just say that the 10/10 on ign strikes me as bullshit. Only because reading the review it feels like he's writing a 8.5/10 review, not a masterpiece game review. It is ign but still... one of the things I've found writing my reviews for AD is that I'll have a pre-conceived rating in mind, then when I write my review I find my rating changes a half a point or so.

In Ground Zeroes
Spoiler: click to toggle

That opening with the music was very cinematic and cool.

EDIT: I'd heard it was short but yeesh. I guess there's side missions but I'll jump straight into TPP.

So is anyone else playing? Because I'm confused as hell by that opening:

Spoiler: click to toggle

It's odd how rarely Snake speaks. When he talks he's simply answering questions or making small observations but otherwise the scenes feel like when characters speak to Link. It's strange.

The stealth is awesome, but I'm so bad at it. It nearly always ends in blood.

The most awesome thing in the game so far is the thing you see outside the elevator near the start. WHOAWHOAWHOA.

Yeah, I mean, I dont think playing MGS4 is essential. Since it's chronologially the last game in the series and fits within the Solid Snake Saga, rather than the big boss saga, which is how I'd split the franchise up.

I'd say MGS3 is the essential one, as well as Peace Walker, seeing as you're playing as Big Boss, not Solid Snake.

It's a pretty good theory. I was just assuming Big Boss doesnt talk as much as since Keifer Sutherland replaced the old VA and is expensive to get a hold of. But yeah, there are moments where he talks a fair bit, check out those cassette tapes, it gives alot of exposition that is put in place over the codecs.

I found the stealth is tricky, at first, especially that first mission where you dont have much tools or support. As with getting a handle with the controls and mechanics. But I'm getting used to how it works, now. Evening infiltration is just so much easier, especially with the open and barren terrain that you start with. Daytime stealth just involves abit too much crawling around from grass to grass. I typically have a routine where I approach an objective at 4PM in-game, which gives me a window to survey the area and neutralize the outskirts as the sun sets into trickier territory.

It wasn't a theory, I was just recapping it because I can't make sense of it. The bandaged dude is definitely Keifer Sutherland, but your character is also voiced by Keifer, though he only speaks after the bandaged guy vanishes. I probably shouldn't dwell on it. It seems like there's a twist in store.

Been going at it. Absolutely amazing game.

Plays like a mix of Far Cry 3/Crysis/Red Dead Redemption, but with the depth, mechanics and charm of Metal Gear Solid. The amount of ways to tackle an objective is astounding and I've only scratched the surface of the things you can research and unlock. You can probably start an entire thread on how to tackle the side-op where you have to 'eliminate' 3 commanders whom are scheduled to have a meeting.

The funniest thing I've done was putting a C4 in the middle of the road, then got in a box and crawled on top of it. I crawled out of the box and left the box there as I hid in the bushes. A truck was incoming and it stopped at the sight of the box. They got out armed and curious about the box. One of them kicks the box and sees the C4 underneath and I blow them up lol.

I actually didnt like the Prologue of the game, it felt abit too drawn out, though some of its moments were pretty fucking cool. I think the most annoying part about this game is crawl controls being abit odd/unintuitive and the contextual action button doing abit too many conflicting things (though that's the case with most AAA 3rd person action games).

Also, sometimes, I just kinda wish it was more... Metal Gear Solid? It plays better than any other Metal Gear Solid game and is so focused on mechanics and natural, uninterrupted open-world pacing. It's just that I miss the endearing codex conversations that have world context and personality to the characters. The cinematic pacing. The boss fights (I havent encountered any yet), but at least the campy humor is there.

The three commanders mission. I was almost pleased with myself except for the one commander I ballooned into a sandstorm.

I've been playing as stealthily as I can, but I'd been thinking that if I was caught and didn't care about my score I could probably just hunker down somewhere and wipe out anyone who comes near. I finally put this to the test but got obliterated. The AI knows how to exploit every avenue. The room I was in had a door leading outside and another leading to an adjacent room with a ladder and and another outside door. They used all three attack points and also stationed guys further off outside to take shots whenever I'd stray too close to the doors. I just got slowly pincered into an impossible position.

The prologue felt like a CoD game, in fact I wonder if the fact that you're constantly following that guy and doing what he says isn't some comment on handholding belonging at the start of a game and not defining a game. I dug it though. The scene in the corridor where the soldiers mow down the crowd you're standing in was palpitating.

I get what you mean about it not feeling fully like Metal Gear Solid. One of the series' best aspects is the wacky characters and especially their theatrics, but it's felt subdued so far.

It's odd that some early missions recommend missiles when missiles require a fairly high R&D level to develop. I ended up filling R&D with the best 40 staff members, which still wasn't enough, so I used my upgraded binoculars to hunt for R&D specialists. I found one in the passenger seat of a truck, so I killed the driver, knocked him out and chucked him in the helicopter. The game makes you do some dark shit hey...

I wasnt exactly sure what the requirement actually asked for. Missiles could be the helicopter upgrade, or an RPG.

But I had air bombardment unlocked as with C4 and made use of those to clear armoured vehicles. Was just a matter of putting a stop to vehicles, which I found Smoke Grenades on the road or boxes work pretty well. Apparently, you can make your horse Poop on the road and if a car goes over it, it will slide out of control...

I rarely think outside of the box like that. I'd tried C4 earlier but ran out without doing much damage, so I ended using the cheapest rocket launcher, requiring a supply drop in-between because those tanks are beefcakes.
