The commerce system in the Witcher 3 is so out of whack! If you're ever stuck for cash just do some monster hunts (they have their own quest section). Poor communities will scrape and scavenge to give 20 crowns for a 40 minute quest but quickly pony up 500 for a simplistic monster hunt. Same with finding lost treasure... find these riches that a bunch of people died for and get 180 coins.

Another great source of income for me was selling armor and weapons. In later acts they're worth heaps and I rarely found myself out of cash. This was good as there were so many Gwent cards I wanted to purchase :D

I just meant it's got an immersive atmosphere like Skyrim.

The way you describe the frustration of eating to heal was how I imagined I might feel a few hours in, but at the moment I like it. I assume that 'meditating to refill potions' means that the game does it automatically if you have the alchemical ingredients? At the very least there's an ability upgrade that slowly refills HP out of combat during daytime, so I might pick that up soon.

The higher difficulty is forcing me to figure out the combat properly instead of just mashing the attack button like in TW2. I came upon a deserter camp near the griffin's abandoned nest and thought it would be a cinch, but they brought me within an inch of my life and I bolted off into the woods. The noonwraith near the well felt like a boss fight. Incidentally, I love those quiet moments where Geralt examines evidence.

The writing is a big step up too. It's so cool how much character there is in a character as insignificant as the scholar who teaches you Gwent. I agree with Chickan that the minor facial expressions don't feel arbitrary like they do in most games.

OK, yeah an open world game like this and skyrim with actual varying weather is nice. It's just so much more immersive in this than skyrim, since the latter was very distractingly ugly in a lot of ways.

Potions and decoctions only require you to have the alchemical ingredients to make them once, to essentially unlock them in your inventory, and then every time you meditate it simply uses alcohol to replenish your supply.

And yeah, I had many similar experiences on normal. Groups of enemies are actually legitimately threatening.

Ah okay. I'm doing the mission where you concoct swallow to help the wounded girl in the herbalist's hut and was wondering why you'd need a "dwarven soul" (or whatever it's called) to brew it. I thought it would be strange if I needed to stockpile something so grandiose for a simple HP boost.

One criticism of the game is that it could really ease up with the tutorials. I get that it's trying to explain some complex things, but it doesn't need to explain everything on each menu interface. A help button would've sufficed.

FYI, it's called "dwarves spirit", spirit as in alcohol. I thought it was the ghost of a dwarf in a bottle of something...

Anyway, the cinematics are brilliant in this game. The stuff in the bar after the griffin contract felt like The Last of Us. It's not quite at that level, but it's much better than most stuff out there. It's also pretty funny.

I ended up traveling to every question mark in White Orchard. I wouldn't normally do that in these games, but it seems like there's something unique about most of them that it's fun to check them out.

Yeah I did that too and I intend to eventually do it for all of Velen and Skellige.

Does the game continue after the story's over?

Yes, there's certain secondary quests that become unavailable if you get too far ahead in / complete the main story first, but otherwise it works just like Skyrim does. You can free roam the entire world to your heart's content after finishing.

Cool attention to detail: I went to Fyke Isle of my own accord and Geralt mentioned that he'd been there when it came up in conversation later on.

Just after impressing me, the game had a gamebreaking glitch during the Fyke Isle quest. I left the place during the boss fight because my sword had degraded and I only had one swallow. While I was gone I chanced upon Graham, brought him to the island, and finished the quest, but the game's behaving as if the boss fight is still happening, meaning the music is still playing wherever I go and I can't save the game.

I'll have to reload back to the boss fight and if I can't do it, then back to the start of the quest.

EDIT: Actually screw it, I'll just take her bones to Graham to see what happens.

EDIT: lol
