Is that the pass to open a bridge that isn't even needed?

Yeah.
Fuck_Giver.exe has stopped working!
Does it matter how I write the truth?

Maybe I'll get The Witcher 2 and see if I like it.

EDIT: Not for $20 I won't.

Thanks dude. I've been checking the Humble Store each day without luck.

Dang. At the lowest settings it's virtually unplayable. I just assumed it would work since Far Cry 3 works well enough on my computer, but it's just too slow.

Ah well. It was only $5. I might just skip to The Witcher 3 when it's cheaper on PS4.

Unless someone has an idea what I can do to improve performance...

Yeah I've been checking the Humble Store as well, for some reason The Witcher games didn't go on sale again.

Did you try lowering the resolution? Were all the Anti-aliasing options and such completely off?

I didn't think to lower the resolution. It runs pretty well! The view I just had isn't ideal but I could fiddle around with it and see what works.

Thanks :)

Question for anyone playing the Witcher 3 who HASN'T read the books... or at least the first one (The Last Wish). If you've done the quest titled "The Last Wish" did the dialogue make sense? It did to me as I've read the books but it seemed like far too an important thing to have as a throwaway reference... yet that's what they did. Was curious as to it's reception by someone who didn't know the preceeding story.

Haha. The ideal resolution gameplay-wise is 800 x 600. It looks like Resident Evil for the PS1, but it plays like a charm!

I bumped up the resolution a bit more and now it's more like, I dunno, Half-Life 2? It looks a lot better than it did.

I spent the first two hours doing the tutorial and the assault of the castle and the game has just said "Welcome to the Prologue!" That was pretty funny. I like it so far but I'm struggling to remember all the buttons, especially for the signs. The dialogue is a step above most games. I like King Foltest.

So, for the first time ever, I acutally took time off work to coincide with the release of a game. Long story short I've written a review and would love to hear your thoughts. Spoiler free and I've tried to cover the good and the bad.

"The Witcher 3 the pinnacle of modern-day gaming. It tells an engaging story, replete with interesting characters, and provides a varying experience with real choice and impactful outcome. Most of all, it's an absolute blast to play, and I can't wait to get back to it. There are a few gripes that, when taken in context of the amount they got right, seem inconsequential, but shouldn't be ignored regardless. If you like action-adventure games, you'd be remiss to let this one slip by."

I think if you want to entice people to read your reviews you should offer a better quote than that. Too many reviewers use that template; it's the kinda stuff I'd scroll right past on Metacritic, because it doesn't distinguish itself or show originality. You could swap "The Witcher 3" with "Mass Effect 3" and you couldn't tell the difference. You're not IGN: you can't coast on the stock template. You need to show that you have something fresh to say.

Looking through your review it's hard to find an alternative quote -- not because the review is bad, but because you don't have a unifying theme. For example, Eurogamer's review discusses the game in the context that it sidesteps Hollywood franchise fads to create something "by, for and about human beings". It has a similar conclusion to your own, but that context makes it more compelling.

The best parts of your review are when you break away from the mainstream review style. The description of the beast quest is interesting and well-written. It doesn't feel like you're checking a box but that you really thought about what you experienced, and your appreciation shows without you mentioning it (which is why I would cut the last sentence of that paragraph). The connection to the novels is interesting, as is your appreciation of how facial movements help to show, not tell.

Elsewhere I think you say with fifteen words what you could say with half that many: you say "the mechanics used for the core gameplay" instead of "the gameplay mechanics"). On this note, you throw the word "core" around too much. I've already said before that you should stop saying "whilst", and now I'll add "furthermore" to the list.

My least favourite part of the review is this:

Quote:

The line between film and game is further blurred by CD Projekt Red's use of virtual cinematography. Their awareness of space helps emphasize character point of view, creating a mood that most other games just don't have. Seamlessly integrated with gameplay, this is further enhanced by the outstanding graphical presentation and quality of the title. Now I know "graphics aren't meant to be important," but they can certainly help enhance an experience. The attention to detail displayed creates an aesthetically pleasant and believable environment, while fidelity adds the level of detail to make it "pop" under scrutiny. Small effects, like individual strands of hair and tree branches reacting to the wind, or the light bouncing off reflective surfaces, don't feel gaudy and helps maintain the illusion that you're looking into a real world - not a digital representation. The aesthetic appeal of the game isn't just restricted to pretty views though - every location is unique and feels like it was designed with practicality in mind.

I'm sorry, but it's just lazy. First, I don't know why you feel you need to defend your appreciation of the graphics with the "graphics aren't important" snipe... but more importantly, you go on about how pleasant, believable and unique the game world is but leave me with no impression of it. If there's any point in a game review where you should start getting descriptive, it's here. With Skyrim you could say "There's nothing quite like reaching the peak of a hill to see the tundra roll out below, dotted with clefts, caves and campfires, and being pricked on by the outline of a tower tucked into a distant mountainside." That's more engaging than speaking in abstractions. If the locations are unique, you should show how they are unique. Writing descriptive prose is hard, but I liked the economical way you went about it when describing the beast quest.

Sorry if I come off as a dick. Your review isn't bad, but it's just so similar to most mainstream reviews that I wouldn't be inclined to read it in normal circumstances. I'd recommend that you try to pull away from the standard and experiment a little. You could end up with a distinct voice.

Thanks. I appreciate all your points.

My initial review was actually a semi-jest one as I figured no-one would be reading it this late in the piece. I wrote the entire thing as if I were reviewing a video game adaptation of Gwent with a third person adventure to provide context for card gathering. Changed it about half way thru last week as I figured there were a lot of people on the team who wanted it so I should treat it more seriously.

With regards to the stock template I get what you mean but, not reading reviews myself, I didn't even realise that's what I was doing. It probably comes down to the way I work. I'm very systematic/structured in my approach to things so that probably comes out in how I structure the reviews. Interesting point regarding the descriptive part of the quest paragraph as that's something I almost removed as I felt it was just adding bulk to a point I'd already made.

Anyway I really do appreciate you taking the time to read it thru and comment. I honestly didn't expect anyone would :)

Our editor's had Bloodborne for a couple of weeks now... would be interesting to get your feedback on that one too - especially considering your love of the game
