It actually might only open after BSB. I think I did him before I checked.

As for the people,

It happens in every Souls. In DS1 I died tons in the Undead Burg and against the gargoyles. In DS2 I struggled in the forest, while in Bloodborne I had little trouble with Cleric Beast but died a lot against the second boss. There will be a point where it'll just click for you and you'll start playing better.

Ugh.. Gargoyles... I HATE gargoyles. I never got past the two on the bridge in Demon Souls and the levels with them in Dark Souls 1 and 2 were horrible. 1 was worse than 2, especially once I figured I could use lightning on the ones in 2 ;)

Unlike Souls, some of these bosses are still really hard on the second playthrough. If you're getting this screwed over by Cleric Beast you're going to HATE the second boss, DESPISE the third and QUIT on the fourth. I'm on my second playthrough and have probably died more times against the fourth boss than in my original run.

(Technically you can do bosses 3, 4 and 5 in any order. I'm just posting them in the order you're likely to come across them).

I've noticed on replaying that "the moment" is not something that happens at a specific point. It'll happen, for sure, but it's not predetermined by doing a particular story thing or other.

Foudn this weird, and completely useless, glitch. If you go to pick up a blood vial, but are already full, it throws up "Unable to aquire Blood Vial due to inventory or storage max" error. If you then use a blood vial and then try to pick it up straight away it throws the error again but you get the blood vial. The blood vial is also still on the ground. So, I guess, you could do this indefinitely... not sure why you'd want to if you were already at max though. It's not like it'd cut down on farming.

That's lame. At least it's not the game-breaking elevator glitch I had. At the rate you're moving I'm sure they'll patch it before you reach it. B)

I don't think I ever had maxed out vials in storage, though I did max out on bullets before I started using them more.

Rofl. You're not wrong there :)

I think the biggest problem, for me, with these games is that it takes 2-4 minutes for me to return to a fight (e.g. FG). So I'll die in 20-30 seconds and then have to wait thru the loading screens then run all the way back which just adds to my impatience. Clever design but it'll probably prove too much for me this time around. I don't think I've got the patience/dilligence/skill to play these games despite loving them so mcuh... especially the atmosphere and lore (so far) in this one. No other game sucks me in and makes me pay as much attention as these do.

The run to FG would be fine if you didn't have to deal with the fire boulder each time. There are really only two bosses in the game that are a hassle to get back to, FG being one of them. Most of them are thirty second sprints.

That fire boulder is fine. Walk forward and, when the enemies start chasing you, just run back and climb down the ladder. Then you can just run past anyone who's left alive :)

What did you guys do with the Red Jewelled Brooch? I can use it to get a weapon upgrade thing (not sure whow that works) or I'm guessing I can return it to the little girl. I want to do the latter but do you know if there's a benefit etiehr way?

Regarding that boss... I've already had more connection with this story and that boss than anyone in Dark Souls 2. Parhaps it's because I'm a Dad. Anyway what a tragic and interesting boss side story

I know how to deal with the boulder; it's just a drag that you can't bypass it altogether.

Give the red-jewelled brooch to the girl. It's part of a sidequest that continues later in the game.

On a side note, how are you guys levelling your characters? I put a few in strength however that now just seems to add 1 to wpn attack whilst giving the same def boost as vitality... so I've just been layering points into vitality

I only boosted vitality, endurance and skill. You should boost either skill or strength depending on your weapon type (remember that even though the WA is barely raising, your weapon scales with the stat) but you should also increase the opposite stat a bit once your preferred stat starts behaving the way you described. I'm pretty sure if you keep increasing strength it'll eventually give bigger boosts to weapon attack; it just plateaus at certain points. I didn't touch arcane or bloodtinge, which denied me some magic attacks later in the game. Not increasing bloodtinge means low gun damage and missing out on an awesome late-game gun, but doesn't effect parrying.
