I always have a saved youtube playlist that's useful for when these threads pop up. List is based off game soundtracks that I feel are consistently excellent throughout.

-

There havent been many games that use the electronic Dub subgenre (not Dub-step) as a basis for providing a soundtrack, thankfully the game that does is excellent and has a wonderfully ambient and compelling soundtrack to back it up.

-

I dont think there's a game that tops the excellent synthwork of Shatter's soundtrack. Rich vintage Analog Synths and some nice appregios just makes the game's music such a pleasure to listen to.

-

All the Silent Hill soundtracks are excellent with their heavily sampled and grimy trip-hop. Silent Hill 4 stands out the most.

-

The Best Platformer last gen also had the best soundtrack in its genre. >:c

-

In terms of delivering ambience, Machinarium's use of detailed textures, subtle pads and minimalistic instrumentation makes it stand as my favourite.

I dont know what it is, but SEGA games in general have excellent music in their games. But I like House of the Dead: Overkill's use of Psychadelic Funk the most. It also did abit of that over-the-top Dubstep before it became cool in one of its boss fights.

-

I feel like one sample doesnt do the soundtrack to Superbrothers: Swords & Sworcery EP justice. It's just wonderfully put together top down, delivering its own distinctive atmosphere and ambience.

-

This is an odd pick. NeoTokyo is a freely distributed Half-Life 2 mod. But it had a composer on board to provide music for the mod. Since it's freely distributed, the composer just went all out with the sampling and mixed it in with excellent instrumentation and synthezers. The result sounds distinctively wonderful.

-

I think Transistor is one of the most sonically sound games out there; music is layered, filtered or enchanced alongside active game mechanics or scenarios. The soundtrack itself is also excellent, especially this track in particular that uses an unorthodox time signature.

-

Unusually addictive and memorable. The music in this game manages to sound contemporary yet distinctive with its Pop/Rock blends. The soundtrack also does a good job of representing the themes and overall aesthetic of the game.

-

One of the rare Rhythm games with an original soundtrack. Comprised of Blues, its quite great.

-

I hate that I like the soundtrack to this. Majority of the soundtrack consists of that juvenile post-hardcore Nu-metal rock that I wouldnt consider listening to outside of the context of a videogame. But it works so well with the over-the-top tone and fast combat pacing of Metal Gear Rising. Its boss themes in particular are rather excellent amping up the excellent boss encounters.

-

There's just something really cool about Persona 3's soundtrack. It can be sappy at times (which fits with the social management mechanics of the game). The electro-jazz touches that weave through Persona 3 just captures the whole clean and modern aesthetic of the game quite well.
This post reads like a triple J DJ describing an album.

I like this. It's relaxed but forceful and serious too.

I want to play Starfox Adventures again someday. I have mixed feelings about it. At its core it's a subpar Zelda clone, lacking the series' masterful design (it has the same complex inventory but isn't innovative with it) but it's so committed to copying it that it's still a Zelda-ish game and worth playing for that.

The whole soundtrack is fantastic but those two are probably my favourites.

My favourite piece of music from Super Metroid has to be:

And it's not a coincidence that this was my favourite from Metroid Prime 2:

I'm such a nerd. I read the text before the videos loaded and knew exactly what two songs you posted.

Also this isn't in the spirit of the thread but I've been listening to MGS5's opening song. It's fun and weird.

The free fan-made mod for Binding of Isaac has better music than Rebirth and the original. This track is like a cool hybrid of music from Metroid Prime and It Follows.

Reminds me of the Risk of Rain soundtrack.

That's got a very original Isaac vibe, which Antibirth has too. Nice.
