This one's excellent too. The transition from a pleasant tone to a more malevolent and foreboding one is brilliant:

Nah, I do like that one. It's very nice. But this is where it was always at:

I really like a lot of the music from the NieR Soundtrack.

However, the winner goes to the soundtrack from Ice Cap Zone, which is one of the best levels in the best Sonic game, Sonic The Hedgehog 3.

Knew that was Stickerbrush Symphony before clicking. It's a tough call which one's better. Stickerbrush sticks out more but Aquatic has a such a peaceful flow. I'd also throw Amiss Abyss from Tropical Freeze in the mix. I haven't played it but I listened to some of the soundtrack when I heard the musician from DKC 1 & 2 composed for it.

I've been listening to the Bastion soundtrack this week and am always struck by how exceptionally good it was.

Rayman Origins is another

I'm also a fan of most things by Manami Matsumae too. Most recently Shovel Knight and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Aside from those there are, of course, the early Final Fantasy games and that glorious opening song for Phantasy Star III

I always have a saved youtube playlist that's useful for when these threads pop up. List is based off game soundtracks that I feel are consistently excellent throughout.

-

There havent been many games that use the electronic Dub subgenre (not Dub-step) as a basis for providing a soundtrack, thankfully the game that does is excellent and has a wonderfully ambient and compelling soundtrack to back it up.

-

I dont think there's a game that tops the excellent synthwork of Shatter's soundtrack. Rich vintage Analog Synths and some nice appregios just makes the game's music such a pleasure to listen to.

-

All the Silent Hill soundtracks are excellent with their heavily sampled and grimy trip-hop. Silent Hill 4 stands out the most.

-

The Best Platformer last gen also had the best soundtrack in its genre. >:c

-

In terms of delivering ambience, Machinarium's use of detailed textures, subtle pads and minimalistic instrumentation makes it stand as my favourite.

I dont know what it is, but SEGA games in general have excellent music in their games. But I like House of the Dead: Overkill's use of Psychadelic Funk the most. It also did abit of that over-the-top Dubstep before it became cool in one of its boss fights.

-

I feel like one sample doesnt do the soundtrack to Superbrothers: Swords & Sworcery EP justice. It's just wonderfully put together top down, delivering its own distinctive atmosphere and ambience.

-

This is an odd pick. NeoTokyo is a freely distributed Half-Life 2 mod. But it had a composer on board to provide music for the mod. Since it's freely distributed, the composer just went all out with the sampling and mixed it in with excellent instrumentation and synthezers. The result sounds distinctively wonderful.

-

I think Transistor is one of the most sonically sound games out there; music is layered, filtered or enchanced alongside active game mechanics or scenarios. The soundtrack itself is also excellent, especially this track in particular that uses an unorthodox time signature.

-

Unusually addictive and memorable. The music in this game manages to sound contemporary yet distinctive with its Pop/Rock blends. The soundtrack also does a good job of representing the themes and overall aesthetic of the game.

-

One of the rare Rhythm games with an original soundtrack. Comprised of Blues, its quite great.

-

I hate that I like the soundtrack to this. Majority of the soundtrack consists of that juvenile post-hardcore Nu-metal rock that I wouldnt consider listening to outside of the context of a videogame. But it works so well with the over-the-top tone and fast combat pacing of Metal Gear Rising. Its boss themes in particular are rather excellent amping up the excellent boss encounters.

-

There's just something really cool about Persona 3's soundtrack. It can be sappy at times (which fits with the social management mechanics of the game). The electro-jazz touches that weave through Persona 3 just captures the whole clean and modern aesthetic of the game quite well.

Some games have extremely good ambient music that you wouldn't necessarily listen to by itself. Both the Dark Souls have great minimalist soundtracks but I wouldn't be chasing much of it up on Youtube.

I think the best contextual music is the save room theme from Resident Evil REmake, which simultaneously conveys that the room is a place of peace but the horror is waiting on the other side of the door. Just a perfect blend of calm and eerie.

Machinarium is a great one. Another really solid soundtrack is Mirror's Edge. It matched the game's aesthetic really well.

Say what you will about the game, but Max Payne 3's soundtrack was pretty damn tight. One of my favourite tracks:

Tears is probably the most recognisable and memorable one for me, though:

Valiant Hearts and Hotline Miami 2. Both absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, I thought Max Payne 3's soundtrack was solid. Kinda derivative at times (you can tell from my list that I tire of orchestrations in videogames), but it had some great moments.

Mirrors Edge topped my favourite part of the game (that yellow room with a vertical jumping puzzle) with the most memorable part of that soundtrack. Now I feel like going back to play the part of that game.
