Welcome to our new and, relatively, shiny podcast!

The Another Dungeon podcast, also known as The New DAFAP Podcast and/or The New DAFAP Podcast XL, embraces gaming in all its forms. With a focus on review and discussion we'll cover all the latest - or most interesting at least - news, reviews and current events!

In this inaugural episode Tim and Dave are joined by Chris Clarke to discuss PlayStation Now, the evolution of video games stores and the new Nintendo 3DS.

It's adventure time! Come on, grab your friends... no not there... that's inappropriate!

Sad I wasn't around to be part of this... but... I've subscribed to the podcast on iTunes and will give it a listen on my bus rides to work.

Re. PS Now streaming, remember that it is a _streaming_ service: your console isn't actually running the game. The console is just sending controller inputs over the network and receiving a video signal back from the data centre. So its not the kind of thing that could help you play a disc game (unless it just had code that recognised the game and then ran an equivalent copy remotely, except that is still going to consume server time on their end).

It also isn't exclusively targeted at PS4 users, with the streaming client available for various Sony and Samsung televisions and the PlayStation TV console. I'm not convinced the current pricing makes sense, but it might be more appealing to people without a PS3/PS4.

That's how I understand it. It works more or less the same way that Remote Play works on the PS Vita, and the Wii U GamePad, except the controller inputs are travelling to a remote server, and the A/V comes all the way back. Fast response time to the server will be just as, if not more, important than bandwidth.

Yep. And since it is a streaming service, Chickan's point about trouble streaming a 45GB game is moot: since the game data stays in the data centre it doesn't matter how big it is.

And given that the data centre probably consists of racks of modified PS3 hardware, a large late generation game probably ties up just as many resources as one of the smaller titles that was offered for download.

Chickan, you said in the podcast that you had a free PlayStation Now trial—what is your Internet connection like, and how did it run?

And here's a year-old article on the backend hardware:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-sony-creates-custom-ps3-for-playstation-now

Custom servers that contain the equivalent of 8 PS3s on a single motherboard. Many people in the capital cities around Australia probably have enough bandwidth for a service like this already. The problem would be latency over an international link, which the NBN won't help with. So Sony is unlikely to make the service available here until they are willing to set up a local data centre holding these custom servers.

Patto, this is the radioactive bug game Chickan was talking about:

It'd be a good game to play at the board games day if it wasn't for the choking hazard.

I was listening on my walk and I said that that's what the game was.

James- Yeah I think I broached the topic of just streaming the audio/visual elements but moved on before I could clarify. Makes sense and also explains why local play ability is irrelevant.

Rans - I was on rim ADSL1 at the time and it ran horribly. On 100mb fibre now so I'd love to try it again... for free though. Not paying for a service I don't need.

Rans - Yep that's the beetle game.
