They're introducing a new in-game currency in a few days that will apparently help you get 4* and 5* covers: Command Points. There is some info about them in this post (along with details of the third 5* character):

http://marvel.com/news/video_games/25385/piecing_together_marvel_puzzle_quest_phoenix

They say 25 command points will let you draw from a "Legendary Vault" containing 4* and 5* covers. Looking at the screenshots in the article, it looks like you'll be able to buy 5* covers outright for 720 command points, similar to how you can buy lower level covers for HP. It is not clear how easy it'll be to acquire these points, but they say reaching 300 points in a versus tournament is one way to acquire some. There will also be some free points given out when they introduce the system, provided you meet some of the conditions in the article.

I finished in the top 20 so I got two X-23 Wolverine covers.

I wonder if they will allow people to buy command tokens (with real cash or hero points).

I managed to complete today's 4* Deadpool match (my first ever). My Professor X was covered 1/1/1 at level 78, but I suspect you could complete it just as easily with just a single purple cover.

I boosted blue/purple stockpile, and went invisible as quickly as possible. That triggered Carnage to put out some friendly attack tiles for me, which was the primary source of damage. It seems that despite Carnage's red doing full team damage, it can't be fired off when the only target is invisible. So all you've got to worry about is him matching the invisibility tile, or using his green to destroy it. Provided you've collected enough purple, you'll probably be able to go invisible again if this happens though. So from that point on, it was just a matter of denying green while trying to protect my invisibility tile and the attack tiles. It was a long match, but I came out of it almost undamaged.

And as a prize, I got a blue Professor X cover out of the legendary token.

And there is some more info about command points in the in-game help. It looks like it will be possible to acquire up to 25 bonus command points at the introduction:

  • 5 points if you played in the last week
  • 1 point a day for finishing the 5 nodes in Deadpool's Daily Quest
  • 5 points for hitting 300 points in the X-23 versus event
  • 5 points if you've linked with Facebook
  • 5 points if you've ever purchased HP or Iso (the cut off is this Sunday)

If you get all this, that is enough for one legendary token.

In an ongoing basis, you'll be able to get more points in the following ways:

  • as rewards for some missions (this could be a bit hit and miss given the way they give out mission rewards when repeating nodes)
  • placement in events
  • as daily rewards
  • when you buy certain HP/Iso bundles, you and everyone in the alliance will receive some bonus command points

It looks like they don't want people buying command points though. The $130 microtransactions only net you 7 command points. So you'd need to spend $13k to get enough command points to buy a 5* cover.

I did the same thing, I only had 1 cover which was the purple (4th one I have now completed).

My prize was a purple cover for him, lol. So pushed him from Level 70 to 86.

A second purple cover would have sped up the match enormously: you'd be strengthening the attack tiles Carnage gives you each turn. Either way, it felt a lot easier than the Invisible Woman battle.

Technically with 1 point a day for Deadpool, it means we will get a legendary token at least every 25 days.

My 4 stars (I am missing Carnage, Cyclops, Deadpool, Ice Man):

Nick Fury - 2/4/3 - Level 188
Thor - 4/1/2 - Level 152
Devil Dinosaur - 2/2/3 - Level 147
Iron Man - 1/1/4 - Level 135
Invisible Woman - 2/2/2 - Level 127
Elektra - 1/1/2 - Level 94
Kingpin - 2/1/1 - Level 94
Wolverine - 1/1/2 - Level 94
Professor X - 0/2/0 - Level 86
The Thing - 1/1/1 - Level 78
Sam Wilson - 0/1/1 - Level 74
X-23 - 0/1/1 - Level 74
Ant Man, Jean Grey, Mr Fantastic, Star Lord - Level 70

I am now on Day 565, Elektra covers will be the next ones I get from the resupplies.

The exact text in the help screen is "For five days of Deadpool's Daily Quest starting Thursday 11/5, you can earn 1 command point per day by scoring 15,000 points". So It is just for one cycle of five characters rather than forever. It looks like there is ~ 15 command points a month in daily rewards though.

As for 4* characters, I'm missing Kingpin, Cyclops, and Red Hulk. My most covered character is Star Lord at 1/4/2, who I had no luck with in his DDQ match.

730 - Silver Surfer (Skyrider)
744 - Deadpool (X-Force)
755 - 25 Command Points
760 - Kingpin (Wilson Fisk)

I found that interesting, looks like you only get 4 or 5 star covers from Day 730 onward.

I finally got my first Kingpin cover. I got lucky, and the sweet taco vault had two Kingpin covers in it, so I thought I'd try opening some taco tokens: 37 tokens later and I have a yellow Kingpin cover. In addition to that cover, I also got:

Iron Fist black (the one colour I have 5 of already)
Ragnarok green (already have 13 covers, and don't want more green)
Daredevil red (yay!)
2 x 250 HP
10 x 1500 Iso
4 x 5 health packs
17 x 2* covers

So not too bad a result. I stopped there, because it's better to wait for the vault to refresh to improve the odds.

About command points: it looks like the requirement to get the 5 from the X-23 versus tournament is to finish with 300 points or more. There are also rewards for placement: 2 command points for top 10, and 1 point for top 50. If that's what future events will look like, then I don't think I'll be seeing any points from future versus events. On the story side, I noticed that 1 of the 4 rewards for the Kingpin essential node was 1 command point, which I got on my first try. So that could potentially give you a daily command point (if the random number generator is nice to you).

Got enough command points to buy a legendary token, and got Silver Surfer. So now I've got two level 255 characters who won't be usable for a long time. Having one 5* seemed to push me up to fighting against level 166 teams in PvP (26 levels above my highest non-5* character), so I do sort of wonder what having two of them will do. I guess I'll be wasting even more Iso skipping teams I'll have trouble beating.

It looks like the pattern for command points in story events is to have 1 as a reward for the 4* essential node, and one for the final repeatable node in the sub-event. Not sure if they'll double the rewards for 2 day subs, but it looks like its enough to buy a legendary token every fortnight if you manage to grab both of these.

I recruited Red Hulk with the token I got with the command points (which ironically is what you need).

Didn't even bother with my Level 94 Kingpin against Luke Cage who you won't be able to damage with his red shield tile.

Looks like they're rerunning the Growth Industry event starting tomorrow, with a purple Ant Man cover as the reward again. Last time it was pretty easy to beat. It'd be nice if they had more events of this type in the game.

Hopefully some more command points to earn as well.

Well, outside of the initial 25 they gave out I managed to collect 12 from the Prodigal Son event (I skipped the first day). I wasn't playing for placement, so just doing one clear of each sub plus however much was needed to get the two command points for the day. This was a bit of a mixed bag though due to it being a random 1 of 4 rewards: some days I lucked out and got the reward first go. Other times it took more than six or replays of the node (the point rewards dropped to 1).

If I'm trying to maximise my score though, I obviously don't want to play this way: grinding down the node early reduces the total number of points you can achieve. So it might not be possible to get the full 14 command points a week this way.
