A thread to discuss our thoughts on Godzilla. Andy and Bernadette discussed it in episode 5 of the podcast and I had a few thoughts so figured this was a good idea.

Go!

Forgive my eloquence as I'm not a very good film reviewer. Hopefully this makes sense though...

I loved and hated this movie in equal parts. The special effects and fight scenes were amazing. I loved the way they were continuous and "panned back" so you could see the action and follow the fight rather than see a bunch of disjointed closeups. Special effects wise this reminded me of Game of Thrones or District 9 in the way they used them. They were great enough to look impressive but didn't look out of place or "break" the movie/scenes.

Plot wise there were a few discrepancies and allowances that shat me. I know it's a Godzilla movie so you have to make allowances but things that seem to break the flow of the movie really break the immersion and impact the enjoyment for me. Not sure if that makes sense.... ok so we all know movies are fake but, when watching, you suspend disbelief and, if it's a well created world, you sort of "trick" yourself into believing. When the characters do something overly stupid or unbelievable and that "trick" is broken I do that inward groan thing and like a movie a little less. Follow?

Anyway my main issue on that front is that this movie is full of things like this for Aaron Taylor-Johnson (main lead) and Elizabeth Olsen (main lead's wife). Aaron's role seems purely contrived to drive the main story whilst Elizabeth's is there to provide us with a view of the "civilian" side of things. My problem with both of them is that they're pretty "flat" characters and way too American hero for my liking. A disaster strikes and both choose to protect their family by abandoning it and doing hero stuff.

E.g. early on Aaron is asked some questions about the monsters. Once he's not needed he's set to go home but, en route, he bumps into the military and decides to join their bomb squad rather than go home to his family in danger. Later Elizabeth does the same thing. She's in danger with her son and decides to send him off with a work colleague and stay behind to work in a hospital (although all she does is run around, stop, look meaningfully back at camera a lot).

Anyway that's not even the part that bothered me most. It's the bits like when Aaron falls off a supremely high bridge into a rocky river then wakes up with a cough on a rocky shore beside the river and a bunch of dead soldiers. Bits like when a bus is stuck on a bridge behind a police barricade and the driver gives a meaningful look then charges thru the barricadee and sprints across the bridge avoiding the most useful barricades and monster attacks in the world! Just so much hero bullshit that was annoying. Even the way they delivered scenes like Elizabeth's decision to send her kid away and stay behind. She makes a meaningful decision by looking at the camera with a determined look, turns around, stops a bus and her work colleague is sitting on the front seat of the bus. Super coincidence. Just before that someone rings the hospital, this person picks it up and calls to Elizabeth who was just running past with an injured person at that exact point... and drops healing that person to take a call...argh!

I think what dissapoints me about this movie is that all that stuff wasn't required and just felt lazy. They started so well with all the Bryan Cranston scenes! I wish they'd kept that momentum (and actor) for the rest of the movie.

That'll do for now. I sound like I disliked this movie way more than I did.
