If interested Patto87 is currently recording a walkthrough of DS2. Dunno what secrets he plans to reveal but... well... I don't watch walkthru vids anyway unless I'm really stuck so I guess nothing'll be spoilt for me.

Not long now :D

Edit : I said I don't watch walkthru vids but I actually did watch this one. Go figure :S

@Goodfellow, I agree that he piles upon it without saying much in its favour, but his thesis is basically that it's good but has taken a lot of steps backwards. I thought the game was great but I couldn't help agreeing with much of what he said.

Just play Dark Souls and everything in the world will be hollow by comparison. Except maybe Demon's Souls. Shame I can't play it.

Why can't you play it?

I thought I was done for good but I already got the urge to play Dark Souls again as a sorcerer. You're right about the soul arrows being badass. Being able to attack with no blow to your stamina is a major plus. I guess the downside is that you can't lay into an enemy like you can in melee and that the rate of fire is fairly slow.

I like playing a different style. It impacts the game to an extent that Skyrim's different classes don't manage.

DS2 just came out for PC so I'm gonna play through it again on hard mode. Champions Covenant, duel wielding only (no shields), deprived class.

I hear that magic is limited to just 20 casts per level or something? In DeS, you can cast as many times as your MP bar allows for, plus you get an MP regen ring, so it's basically limitless. Sounds like it would be harder to rely on it as much in DS. Wouldn't you have to save it for difficult enemies and boss encounters rather than casting all over the place?

Oh mama mia. Can you still use your second weapon as a semi-shield when dual wielding like you can with the torch?

Currently, I can use 30 soul arrows before having to regenerate them at a bonfire. So far I'm alternating between the soul arrows and a dagger, saving the former for tougher enemies. I don't really mind though. You'd be overpowered if they were limitless, at least this early in the game.

I think you should put some points into your strength so you can wield it properly, and then find a nice magical sword. Those things do a bunch of magical AND physical damage for sorcerers in Demon's, as well as allowing you to get nice and personal with the enemies. My lovely Crescent Fulchion+5 has replaced casting magic as my preferred mode of attack.

Get rid of the dagger. It's much too weak even for magicians. At least get a scimitar and upgrade it.

The dagger is the sorcerer's starting weapon and I haven't come upon another yet. There was a scimitar for sale from a merchant but I didn't have the souls on hand. I should chance upon a decent weapon in the section I'm entering next.

Nope, no blocking at all unless you two hand your weapon. I've slightly gone back on my word anyway, starting using a bow. It would be nearly impossible to do it without one, the beginning of the game just has so many groups of enemies.

Something I can say in Skyrim's favour is that it was very fun using a bow in that game. It played into the idea of stealth and there were a lot of moments where my character would be under threat if the enemies reached him before he could take them out. Sometimes in Dark Souls, and especially in Dark Souls 2, it felt cheap taking advantage of the AI's invisible boundaries and picking them off from afar. You could just say don't do it then, but the point is that I shouldn't be able to do it.

Skyrim AI is easily exploitable but so much so that it's basically a staple of the series. I enjoy it like I enjoyed Zelda glitches. I keep talking about Skyrim like it's a mediocre game when it's probably my favourite game of the generation after DS1.

Dark Souls is the greatest game of this or any other generation.

Like, look, usually I'll love something and then my opinion of it will wane over time. Like Dark Souls 2 or Skyrim or Breaking Bad. But I'm still so giddy about Dark Souls. I want to keep playing it. I wanna understand the mechanics behind it that make it so great. Christ, I love it.
