It heals you whenever you get the rating, which can be a while down the line. I've had my life saved a few times by a well-timed message heal. I'm not sure if it happens as soon as the message is rated or with a delay though. Plus, the messages are all pre-written and you choose from a menu, so the fact that From Software included that in the options means a proper use of the system. |

It's probably different in the later games, but in Demon's, I have more healing grasses than I know what to do with (everyone does, since they're basically limitless). Even if I was aware that having your messages rated increases your health, it would never occur to me to use it for that purpose. It's an abuse of the system if it makes me avoid the messages altogether because I simply can't bear to see another 'I'm in trouble. Please give me some health'. In fact, fuck everyone that leaves messages like that. I hate every single one of those irritating cunts. |

Some people leave pretty funny things sometimes. I liked when there was a gap in a wall showing lava below and someone helpfully said "lava". |

My favourite was the first time I saw "be wary of giant but hole" before a particularly difficult boss. |

Yeah I liked that the first time too. The highest rating I've got is a measly 5 for "boulder ahead" in front of a boulder. Not one of my finest efforts. I'm starting to get Dark Souls fatigue. I tried to rush to the Ancient Dragon fight about seven times, making it once, and then threw in the towel because I couldn't be bothered dealing with the enemies on the stairs anymore (they keep breaking the animation when I try to go through the mist wall, and I can't be bothered wasting five minutes each time just to kill them all). I can't be bothered beating Vendrick either. I am interested in the Dark Chasm stuff though (which, c'mon, you have such a sliver of a chance of ever finding without looking it up online...the Black Gulch portal in particular is so out of the way). I feel kinda bummed out, too, for doing that thing I mentioned in the spoiler. It's late enough in the game that it shouldn't be an issue, and I made sure not to waste a stack of souls I had by buying a dozen human effigies and Elizabeth Mushrooms from the merchant in Undead Crypt, but it just doesn't feel right. I wanna beef my dude up even more before NG+. Edited by Moo, Apr 21 2014, 11:50 PM.

I read about this online and agree in retrospect: the transition from Earthern Peak to Iron Keep is so jarring. I remember being taken aback at how you're immediately plopped into a new place without any gradual changes to the environment. It's like Gruntilda's Lair in Banjo-Kazooie. Oh look, a lava world! |

It's a bit different in Demon's. None of the game's 5 worlds have any aesthetic or thematic connection to each other at all beyond being gungy and dilapidated. It's never a problem, since they're separated by the hub area, which acts as a kind of inter-dimensional bridge. It seems to make sense that the Nexus portals would lead to vastly different places. Sometimes it's annoying that you can never walk from one world into the other without going back to the Nexus first, but I think I like this format. It feels like I'd get lost too often in an open world. One great thing about DeS is that the areas are big and complex without ever being overly confusing. I rarely get turned around or lose my way. I really appreciate that. Shows how tightly and intelligently the worlds have been designed. I really don't need the navigation to be a hassle in a game like this, so I'm a bit apprehensive about the non-linear exploration of DS. Does DS have any kind of hub area at all? |

Yeah both DS1 and DS2 have a hub. |

I wouldn't call DS1's FIrelink SHrine a hub, it's just the central area with a few NPC's in it. What makes Majula in DS2 a hub is that almost everything you need is there. |

I just beat it, kinda cheaply cause I didn't beat Ancient Dragon, Vendrick or Darklurker. The last boss was very fun once I figured out that the poison and curses are avoidable. Serves me right for trying the old "circle around and wait for an opening" trick. It's weird thinking this game is excellent but also being disappointed because it's not Dark Souls 1. I can't think of a single category it really beats it in, except some minor combat stuff, but then only to an extent even there (is it me or is the AI dumber this time around?). 9/10. Both games could really use a timed boss run mode. |

This is generally a very nice critique of DS2. It's long though. If it jumps to 5:10 I didn't mean to do that, go to start: He does have a few dumb points (he fundamentally misunderstands the Prowling Magus fight) but I agree with a lot of it. Edited by Moo, Apr 23 2014, 02:04 AM.

That guy sure does complain a lot. Why spend so much time re-playing a game he obviously hates? Apart from a half-hearted 'DS2 is still better than most games released in the last few years', he doesn't have a single positive thing to say about it. I just can't believe it's quite that bad. I liked his reverence for Demon's Souls though. If anything, that one seems like his favourite. Speaking of DeS, I seem to have hit a wall. I just want to finish it and move on now, so I keep rushing into things, but that's definitely not the way to play it. I keep falling off ledges, dying in fights I shouldn't have any trouble with, running into traps I know are there but can't be bothered being careful about, and generally fucking up. I also somehow changed the world tendency of Shrine of Storms to black, so the enemies there have become infuriatingly tough and aggressive. I thought I'd be able to farm the second area of the world 'til I'm super-levelled, but I just keep dying and losing all my souls. It was the hardest area even at white tendency, but now it seems almost impossible. Those fucking reapers get me nearly every time. It's so frustrating. Still, only 3 areas and 5 or 6 bosses to go, so I'll soldier on. NG+ won't be happening any time soon though. Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Apr 23 2014, 06:47 PM.
