I'm over 25 hours into DeS, and still have nearly half the areas to explore and 8 bosses to fight. Admittedly, much of that time was spent on repeating levels and building a competent mage/swordsman hybrid, but still. Long game. Anyway, now there's no doubt that spamming magic in boss fights is a form of cheating. It offers no challenge whatsoever to hide behind a pillar or on a high spot and keep hitting them with the soul arrow spell until they die. It seems to work for almost all of them. At first I was relieved they weren't as hard as I expected, but now it's just too easy. I almost felt sorry for poor Adjudicator. If I ever do NG+, I'll definitely go for a melee build to even the odds a bit. |

That might be something they sought to fix in Dark Souls, because there are no safety zones during any boss fight (except one, but I think it was an oversight) and you have to constantly stay on the move. |

Wow, this game is haunting me. It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up this morning. I got a bit complacent and too confident in my abilities again last night, only to be cut down to size by the ultra-difficult second area of Shrine of Storms. It's probably the most challenging and satisfying level I've completed so far. Super-levelled black skeleton, invisible black phantoms, the re-spawning shadowmen with a devastating beam attack, reapers who can kill you with 2 touches, silver skeletons with giant cleavers... It was pretty epic. Luckily, it also gives up by far the most souls and valuable darkmoonstones, so I'll have to come back later for some farming. The boss was easy again, but I didn't use any magic. The thing about this one is that he's blind, so as long as you run away after hitting him a few times, he loses your position and you can prepare another sneak attack without danger. DS2 has also ramped up in difficulty since I proclaimed how easy it is. The giant spider, poison Medusa and the two Dragonriders were tough as hell. I had to bite the bullet on the Medusa and use my souls to boost poison resistance. I have to agree with the reviews and say that while it's an excellent game in its own right, Dark Souls is still better. I really miss the interconnected areas, for one thing. There was nothing like, say, walking through one area and realizing that you're actually behind a locked cage door that you saw at the start of the game. At least it still has inconspicuous doors and walkways that lead to whole new areas. I like how there are so many areas, but it's weird that a place like Shrine of Winter gets the epic title treatment when it's really just an uninhabited pathway to Drangleic Castle. Does that mean that playing as a pure mage isn't really viable in Dark? I can understand why they did it like this in Demon's Souls. They wanted to make it feasible to beat the bosses even with a very low melee skill, but they went too far and made them much too easy to exploit for magic users. Still, if there's nowhere to hide to buy yourself enough time to cast the spells, magic is practically useless. I'm not sure that's a good thing either, since it practically forces you towards melee builds. At least Demon's gives you a real choice. |

I don't know. The only magic I ever used was a weak heal spell. I've thought that sorcery users might be at a disadvantage because they'd have to spend some souls on physical defense anyway, meaning a melee focused build will end up much more powerful. Unless of course they balanced it out and sorcery doesn't require as much levelling up. |

A friend of mine played through Dark Souls as a sorcerer and had a really easy time of it, only one boss proved a challenge as it was resistant to magic. Strength builds are probably average difficulty but full dex builds are definitely to most difficult. You don't do much damage for at least the first half of the game and blocking boss attacks is rarely a viable option. |

That applies to Demon's Souls as well. A Magic build does require you to spread the souls around a little thinly, but it gives you the luxury of distance even at lower levels. You can kill so many enemies before they get close to you. I was already farming the red eye knight at soul level 10 with weak soul arrow and a thief ring. Melee users at low levels would have to leave him alone and would find him a challenge even at level 50. This is what makes magic the easiest option, even though we never grow as powerful in any one thing as the other builds. My class starts with a very low HP and attack power, so I've had to boost my defence and vitality and dexterity, as well as strength so I can wield swords. I'd certainly get my ass kicked in PvP by a similarly levelled melee specialist, but my sorcery is more than adequate against the AI. |

Oh fuck off glitch. Last night I killed those stone guards that, once dead, are supposed to initiate the elevator just after the Dragonriders, but nothing happened. I've been blindly travelling the world trying to figure out what to do next and just tried this again now for no reason and suddenly it works. I was very close to checking a walkthrough there... I also would've killed the Looking Glass Knight on the first try but my dumb sword was at risk and I couldn't swap it in my time. Which was stupid to even attempt (swapping) because I could've attacked it with my shield. Which was stupid to have even needed to attempt because I should've equipped repair powder before the fight. Yeah, those are the stone guards I'm talking about. I killed them last night and nothing happened. The statue didn't turn that pedestal.
