Kinda dumb that you need to travel to Majula to level up. You're just as capable of doing it at the bonfire. It doesn't change anything; it just adds more steps to the process for no reason.

Also Christ does shit break easily in this game. I've already burned through 4 swords.

The leveling up system is going back to the way it was in Demon's Souls, where you had to go to the hub area to level. I prefer it to how it is in DS1, having almost everything you can spend your souls on in one place makes it easier to make decisions about what to use them on. I found myself leveling up in DS1 just because I had some spare souls, which ended up hurting me late-game.

Also, the durability of weapons resets when you rest at a bonfire in DS2, so if you see a weapon get low (the little red bar below it's icon in the hot-bar represents durability) then swap it out until you get to a bonfire again. Save souls on repairing.

Yeeees!!! Seems I did just need a break. I got to the boss and beat him on first attempt. He was almost ridiculously easy after all the hassle of getting to him. It sure was satisfying though. Fucking finally! I've learned that I have to play much more aggressively than I was doing. I tended to just hang back and try to pull off those parries, which wasn't getting me far. I got much better results by rolling in close and getting off some sneaky stabs in the back before they finish their attack animation.

The catharsis is totally worth the struggle right? And parrying does a lot of damage but it's not easy most of the time.

I didn't know that about the bonfires. Thanks.

The cheap joke messages get tiring quick but I smiled when I got to the tree that says "The giant is at peace" and below someone wrote "giant but hole".

Got my first boss summoning we all smoked the dude. Unless I come across a ridiculously hard boss I'd rather not summon anyone into my own world. Helping out is fun though.

I've been playing this too much. I've got a nerd injury with blisters on my middle and fourth fingers.

I like how the game rewards success and punishes failure. It's simultaneously inventive and cruel how it lowers your HP each time you die as a hollow while most games would offer hints or extra help if you kept dying. I've also noticed a number of dead ends that could easily trap people if they try running away from enemies, and the game makes the Dragonrider fight easier if you kill some of the enemies beforehand. I'm up in the air about enemies disappearing if you kill them enough. That ain't Dark Souls, but at the same time it's a relief that you don't have to keep going through areas using rote memorization to kill what needs to be killed to advance.

Is it cheating to repeat a level just to grind? I advanced into the Stonefang Tunnel full of confidence and with full human health, only to realise that I could barely make a dent in the first few miners even with my level 3 scimitar. I quickly turned it off before I died, and am now thinking I should do the castle again just to gain a few levels, since I now know the layout most intimately and don't think I'll die. The red knight gives you about a soul level each time you kill him, so I'm thinking I should farm him for a while...

You'll likely outgrow the soul output of early enemies very quickly but you might as well mine them while they're still worth something. If you have a decent weapon that's beyond your current stats you should work towards being able to use it effectively. Scimitars are good for speed but there are likely more powerful weapons available to you. Both DS games give you a halberd early on and it's a great choice. Aside from it making defense slightly harder (because swinging it and missing an enemy leaves you wide open), it does a heap of damage.

I have a bastard sword, but I'm apparently not good enough to use it yet. I wish I started with a class wielding a long weapon. That seems like it would take a lot of stress out of the game, but then again, I LOVE my soul arrow magic. Combined with the fragrant ring, which automatically refills your MP, it's pretty damn deadly.

Man, fuck this game! I've been playing it for what must be close to 3 hours and I'm still at the very start. I've taken to simply sprinting through as much of the level as I can, but that gets me no souls and the end result is the same. I did get further than ever before on the last attempt, only to be insta-killed by a fire breathing dragon. Back to the start you go, dog! I honestly didn't expect it to be quite this unreasonably brutal. Maybe I'm just using the wrong class or something.

Now that I know what I'm in for, I think I might take a bit of a break and play 'Papers, Please' instead. It's meant to be just as depressing, but I hear it's actually possible to make progress...
Whoops didn't see your last post.

Probably should've laid off the game last night. It's even worse today so I can't even hold the control. It feels like I have a truckload of heroin and nothing to inject with.

Well, you didn't have to delete yours before I had a chance to see it...

Demon's Souls has given me no blisters so far, but I did get some mild cramps in my right hand from gripping the controller so tightly.

I suggested using the mage class that has the projectile magic and the ring that regenerates the magic bar. I saw your last post right after submitting it...

I forget the name of the fellow from the Lounge (the one with the Vault Boy avatar), but when I bought Demon's Souls in 2012 and began complaining the way you've been so far, he suggested using that class because magic is easy to exploit as you progress through the game. He'd beaten the game at least three times from memory, so I'd take some of his word into consideration.

Have you gotten far? I've been farming the red eye knight in the first level for the past couple of days. He gives lots of soul and is so simple to kill if you equip the Thief's ring and keep sneaking up on him before unleashing a volley of soul arrow. It's funny how easy the whole level seems now. After all the initial trouble, now I just bulldoze through it without ever coming close to dying. So it was time to move on. The next level of Bolateria palace isn't too bad either, but those blue knights and archers at the end of the dragon's run got me the last couple of times. I reckon I'll get them next time. I've worked out a strategy.

I've decided to focus on a mage build, so I've been putting most of my souls into magic, while occasionally buttressing the intelligence, vitality, and endurance stats just as a safety blanket. I'm starting to feel quite formidable!

I think I'm officially addicted now.

Goodness, no. I was still on the first section of the Bolateria castle when I put it down for GTA IV. All this brouhaha from Dave about Dark Souls, and now you, has developed an itch for me to pick it up again.

I would feel entirely lost in Demon's Souls without internet guides and the wikis. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if I kept missing important items and areas, which I inevitably would do with no help. I'm different to dave in this respect. I don't feel it's overly important to discover everything on my own.

Sometimes it's a double-edged sword though. I read about a way to essentially break the game by exploiting a Nexus glitch that would give me infinite souls. I must admit I'm tempted. I level up too slowly and feel eternally underpowered. It would give me a massive boost to add several soul levels at once. Then again, it would be a massive cheat and would probably bother me for the rest of the game. Hmmm, what to do...
