I can't put my finger on why it but it's not quite reaching DS1 levels for me yet. That said I haven't even fought a boss yet. I think there are too many characters and the story is quite explicit, whereas DS1 is very vague beyond the opening cutscene and lets the environment itself do most of the explaining. There's also an alarming amount of playfulness and whimsy that distracts a bit from the desolate nature of the world. It's still very fun though. I was getting summoned within seconds of placing my sign and I'm seeing ghosts everywhere; I'm loving the multiplayer aspect. One thing that sucks: when looking at merchants' weapons/clothes you can't see a comparison between them and what you're currently using. Edited by Moo, Apr 8 2014, 02:03 AM.

Another of the reasons I think I'll hold off for the PC release before starting DS2. Amazed you're doing them back to back. Thought you'd want a change of pace. |

I think Dark Souls made everything else stale by comparison. |

So I started Demon Souls last night. Mercifully, it's manageable so far. The skeletal grunts at the start of the first world didn't give me too much trouble. The key seems to be to isolate them and pull off that uber-powerful parry/riposte move, which I'm starting to get the hang of. It's encouraging that I already got past a number of bloodstains without even coming close to dying myself. My first death was stupid. I willingly jumped into a hole because I was fooled by a message saying 'beginners should start here'
. It was quite embarrassing...I'm playing as 'Royalty'. Not particularly strong in melee combat, but I love the soul arrow. Kills most things with one hit for now. I'm surprised the online portion still seems to be going strong. I've already seen a bunch of ghosts running around. Edited by Sir Goodfellow, Apr 8 2014, 03:12 PM.

DS2 has so many ghosts that a few times I've been rifling through my inventory and mistaken them for enemies and freaked out for a second. So does Demon's Souls have much exploring? |

I don't know yet. I only played it for a short while. The first world seems to have a number of branching paths, though most of it is inaccessible for now. I've been running pretty much in a straight line so far, but it feels like it will open up soon. |

Demon's Souls has plenty of exploring, just imagine Dark Souls if each area was separated. |

Any tips to make it easier at the start? |

If it's similar to Dark Souls I'd say you should focus on increasing HP, stamina and strength/dexterity depending on which one of those was higher for you starting out. You don't want an even spread of points across every attribute because down the line you'll be average in everything and great at nothing. Of course if you wanna primarily use magic increase those stats instead of strength and dexterity.

Ah now I see. It's not so much the difficulty of individual fights that makes it hard, but the fact that dying takes you right back to the start of the level. I got deep into the first castle 3 times now (like about 20- 30 minutes of gameplay each time), but these lamp-hatted demons with spears always manage to do me in, so I end up having to do the whole thing again. The last time was infuriating. And I'm still not even up to the first boss. And apparently I can't even level up until I've beaten him. Frustration already creeping in... |

I did manage to open up a shortcut, which thankfully stayed open on the next attempt, and I stumbled upon this awesome ring that increases my health while in soul form, so I am making progress of sorts! Now I keep getting destroyed by these armoured soldiers in a narrow corridor. They always surround me and give me no chance. |

20-30 minute setbacks sounds brutal. In DS1 you're set back 10-15 minutes at the most. |

Man, fuck this game! I've been playing it for what must be close to 3 hours and I'm still at the very start. I've taken to simply sprinting through as much of the level as I can, but that gets me no souls and the end result is the same. I did get further than ever before on the last attempt, only to be insta-killed by a fire breathing dragon. Back to the start you go, dog! I honestly didn't expect it to be quite this unreasonably brutal. Maybe I'm just using the wrong class or something. Now that I know what I'm in for, I think I might take a bit of a break and play 'Papers, Please' instead. It's meant to be just as depressing, but I hear it's actually possible to make progress... The "easy" beginning class in the other two games is Knight, who's powerful, has good health and good defense. I'm so stupid. All the way through DS1 I couldn't figure out why my combos were reaching such high numbers but the health bars weren't following suit. I just realized it's showing the accumulated damage of your combos, not the damage from each hit. |
