But... there are tutorial caves at the beginning which teach you how to sprint and jump!

Dark Souls 2 has tutorial caves at the start.

OK, a good idea I think. The basic fundamentals of the game shouldn't have to be figured out. How would you guys compare Dark Souls II's difficulty compared to the first?

It's been too long since I played #1 but Dark Souls II felt easier. Nice, frequent bonfires and lots of summonable players/NPCs if you found things got too tough.

They're close to equally difficult, but I'd give the edge to DS2 if only because it very annoyingly just bombards you with enemies at some points instead of giving you a balanced, interesting challenge. That said, it does have more bonfires than DS1.

I'm not factoring summons into the equation because True Heroes don't summon on a first playthrough.

Interesting. Dark Souls doesn't seem to chuck very much at you at once. The challenge seems to be taking fairly tough enemies one or two at a time but having to get through quite a bit until your next bonfire.

DS1 has an issue DS2 doesn't: once the game opens up after Anor Londo, the areas you decide to explore last are likely going to be pretty damn easy. There's one boss that's monstrously difficult if you visit it early but a piece of cake if you visit it late. On my first playthrough I killed it last and on my first try, while the second time around I tackled it first and died about a dozen times. The DLC isn't effected by this though and has the hardest boss fights.

When you roll in DS2 you aren't invincible :)

Isn't there a stat in DS1 that determines how long during the roll you're invincible for?

Yeah you are, it's got pretty much the same timing as in DS1 although you can increase the length of time you're invincible for by increasing adaptability.

You are? Rolling didn't help me one iota in #2 which was why I went the shield route

Well I just beat Ornstein and Smough, the hardest boss for me so far. Died a good 7-8 times I think, got pretty pissed off at it. So I summoned an NPC to help (which makes a world of difference when you have to fight two bosses at once) and exploited the pillars to slowly kill off Smough (the big one) once I took out Ornstein. Still rocking the Halberd +10. It's nice to be able to teleport between bonfires now, but rather annoyingly I don't have a firekeeper souls on me to get the firelink shrine back. I've spent them all on reinforcing my estus flask to +4 which was probably dumb considering I still don't have the thing that allows me to kindle bonfires past the first.
