You know what I loved about the final boss? The music. To me it conveyed the inevitable need to let things go, like this beautiful game.

Pure fucking brilliance.

DS2 now.

I can't overstate enough how much I love Dark Souls. Best game of its generation. Its greatest achievement is inspiring the same sense of adventurous wonder Ocarina did when I was 11.

In my opinion, it's a art.

One more thing: Skyrim gets a lot of hate that I don't think it deserves, and I absolutely love it. Exploration is one of its greatest attributes. What's stunning about Dark Souls is that it pulls off the same feat even more efficiently when, by comparison, it's a fairly linear game. Skyrim sprawls out in every direction and this eventually leads to diminishing returns; Dark Souls strikes the perfect balance between freedom of exploration and linearity so that it rarely feels linear and the worth of a particular area isn't devalued by its place among (and similarity to) a million other areas.

Like all Elder Scrolls games except Morrowind, Skyrim got pretty boring 10 hours in (a full 40 hours before I stopped in disgust). Freedom is fine for a while, but I also need environmental and mission variety to keep me interested. I think I'm done with Elder Scrolls forever.

I have no interest in Elder Scrolls Online but I was obsessed with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and look forward to the next game.

Dark Souls is better than all of them. You should probably go to Sydney and get it.

Morrowind was hard to get into, but it paid off. It was just ramping up after 10 hours. You were getting stronger, you were building your castle, you got access to truly different areas that were off limits before. There were also so many more houses you could join, in addition to the main mage/fighter/thief things of the later games. Furthermore, the Dark Brotherhood came to you suddenly, in a dream, after about 30 hours. It felt really special. It was so much more rewarding than any other ES game. I feel like Oblivion and Skyrim were so front loaded that there was nothing to discover after the initial wow factor wore off. Also, Morrowind was absolutely brutal unless you used the cheats, so there was a real feeling of accomplishment that was missing from the following games.

I loved Morrowind.

It also has the most unique environments and atmosphere. The mushroom houses and ash plains stick out. Oblivion feels like one big pastoral/forest area with a few mountains. I think Skyrim is quite diverse and unmatched in scope but I guess it's not as unique as Morrowind.

It'd be nice if the next game travelled to one of the areas you always hear about but never see, like the desert cities in Hammerfell or the swamps where the Argonians live.

Is there any way in-game and offline of locating The Great Hollow? I mean is it hinted at anywhere? Finding it seems tailor-made for online play. I have this and then Gwyn and then I'm done :(

Ash Lake feels like no other area in the game. Soothing in a way.
It would be pretty hard to find The Great Hollow without being online, the messages help a lot there.

Good to see someone else falling under the Souls' spell, absolutely fantastic series and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes after DS2.

How deep did you go into the lore of the game? It's pretty difficult to make any sense of it on your first play through, although I felt the stories of each individual character more than made up for that, as they were more straight forward.

The characters of Solaire and Seigmeyer were surprisingly complex and had pretty satisfying (although not really happy) conclusions to their stories. Did you get to see the end of Seigmeyer's?

Also, enjoy playing DS2 with online. It really is a completely different experience. One of the only game franchises to combine the best of single-player experiences and cooperative and competitive multiplayer is the Souls series, and the fact that it does it so seamlessly is icing on the cake. My only complaint is that the lag can get very annoying in PvP.

Early DS2 impressions: The movement is much more fluid. I'm so used to DS1, which is a little rougher around the edges, that I'm trying to adjust to the fluidity and extra speed. The opening cinematic was awesome. I'm a swordsman and chose the petrified thing.

I'm assuming Covenant of Champions is the game's hard mode because I can't even make it through the first part of Forest of the Giants. It feels like the first couple of days of DS1 did.

Yeah I played up to the first boss before realizing that the Covenant of Champions makes the game harder.
