Any tips for the old dragonslayer? I own him a lot of the time but then he does a jumping attack with massive range followed by three quick hits in succession. The jumping attack ALWAYS breaks my defence (even if at full stamina) and the follow up hits take my health from full to zero. I've tried dodging left/right however he turns mid air and always hits me. A hit without my shield up knocks me down by half!

If it wasn't for that 4 hit combo he'd be a cinch!

I'm not sure if this will work but try backstepping or a backwards dodge. I remember keeping at mid-range with this guy and attacking after he did a certain move.

Ornstein (Dragonslayer) is pretty easy with a shield, you can block all of his attacks and only really need to dodge his jump attack (the one you're having trouble with) and his magic slam thing. For the jump attack try rolling to the side at the last second. There's a mechanic in the Soul games where each roll you do has a certain amount of frames in the animation in which you're invincible. Adaptability increases the number of invincibility frames but it's not needed to dodge effectively. They're basically soon after you begin the dodge as you're in midair, not touching the ground. Try practinging on the big knight dude next to the first bonfire in the area. One you master the timing it makes some fights way easier.

Cheers. I gave it another shot this morning but only had 10 minutes so was only doing it half arsed... he's not very forgiving when you go in half arsed :)

Kinda annoying being stuck on him as I can see how to beat him and know I'm making rookie mistakes. Unlike that big fireball breathing slug guy who I know I'm losing too because he's just too tough (one hit kills)

No bonfire but there is a shortcut you can open up just after you drop down into the dock area.

I think that's where I got to this morning before work. Walk onto a pier thing and three guys pulled themselves up from the edges. Was expecting it but still damned spooky!

Is the shortcut obvious? Like that big pile of rubble separating the front section from the back?

It's a chain door sorta in one of the houses. When you first enter the area and go up the stairway, halfway up is an area with a swordsman and a dog. There's a house with 3 sleeping guys in it. On the top of that building is the gate but you need to access it from the other side. I'd go there first to get my bearings then make my way round

That's not much of a shortcut! You still have to do half the level and deal with a bunch of those insect dudes. Still, better than nothing I guess.

You can get rid of the insect guys. You. Can also summon an npc for the boss fight from the shortcut

Is that the thing that uses the Pharros stone? I didn't want to waste it so I figured I'd hold on to my precious 1 for now.

I thought she might be useful when she said I could call on her any time for help. Shit dialogue but it got the point across :)

Hey if someone comes into my game and we beat a boss does it still split the number of souls received? and, where that was leading, if I summon her do I have to split the reward?

Is the Dragonslayer literally Ornstein or just a similar dude?

In true Dark Souls fashion there's no definitive answer. Last I saw the most popular theory was that the Ornstein in the first game wasn't the real one and just another creation of Gwyndolin, whereas the real Ornstein traveled to Drangleic and then either he's immortal so that's the same Ornstein or one of his ancestor/disciples or something.
