That sounds like the homing soul arrow. It's a pretty high level spell in Demon's, so I only got it towards the end and hardly ever used it. It seemed powerful enough, but took forever to cast and wasted most of my MP bar on a single enemy. I preferred Firestorm as my devastating spell. It hurt everyone in the area and made short work even of the bosses.

It's interesting because I'm well over the halfway mark at this point but haven't received any particularly powerful magic attacks. My most powerful is the great heavy soul arrow, which is limited and takes a long time to launch. I haven't come across any cool pyromancy yet. You basically are forced to raise your strength stat a little to gain a decent weapon, whereas a melee character can avoid intellgence and faith stats altogether (at the expense of slightly easier boss fights).

Just started DS2 tonight. Forgot how much of a harsh mistress it could be.

Beat those first two giants before remembering (read as Patto reminded me) that Dark Souls offered multiple paths. Went back and found the Forest of Fallen Giants. MUCH better starting area :) Still got gang raped by three guys and an archer at the top of a ladder though. Lol. Then fell down, lost all my souls and decided it was time for bed.

Dear lord this game is so good! I'd forgotten.

Those three guys and the archer killed me so many times. That archer is almost on par with Anor Londo's archer duo as the most annoying enemy in the game.

I played for about an hour last night and am already more immersed in it thatn many others. They really do execute everything perfectly. I'm at work thinking about it now :S

Hope the kids go to bed early tonight...

In Demon's, you don't get access to any advanced spells until you free particular NPCs quite late in the game, who then become your magic vendors. I probably would have missed at least one of them if I didn't look up a guide. But really, the original soul arrow is all you ever need in DeS. The other spells make the battles much quicker and more convenient, but I'm sure I could have gone through the whole game by just backing away and firing soul arrow if I had the patience for it.

Also, the faith stat applied only to miracles (mainly defensive and curative spells). I left faith pretty low and pumped most of the souls into 'magic'. By the end, I was a pretty powerful magical sword wielding offensive sorcerer. I had to increase my strength, endurance, and dexterity as well to make the most of my weapons, but it was well worth it in the end. The magic stat didn't need to be sky-high to be super effective.

That's true, now that I think about it. My intelligence is only at 21 currently, whereas my strength at this point would have been pressing 30 last time around.

It would technically be possible to defeat every boss with original soul arrows if you equipped about 90 or 120 of them, but it would be a really tedious affair in Dark Souls. Around the 7th boss I was barely making a dent and now I don't equip them. Generally speaking I prefer a melee build because the boss fights are more thrilling. Some bosses are so easy to kill with soul arrow variants. It's still fun, but the pattern of attack you take involves much less risk and requires less precision.

For your melee builds are you guys relying on shield or dodge? I went a warrior (played as a magic user in DS1) and chose a warrior over the two swords guy because he had more health and a shield. Finding I'm dodging a lot with the big guys but using the shield for the stun when swamped by small groups.

I started as a dual-wielding swordsman but swapped to a shield as soon as I could. Once you get a 100% damage reduction shield I think the choice is obvious. If you're talking about the big guys in Heide's Tower of Flame, I just circled around them until they'd completed their three-swing attack and then moved in for a few shots.

Yeah they were the guys. That's the first area I went too. I couldn't move fast enough to simply avoid them so I had to roll to dodge attacks.

As I said earlier I'm currently doing a duel-wielding only run-through in the Company of Champions. So no blocking allowed, only dodging. Only using ranged weapons to bait enemies. Put 16 hours into the run and I'm only up to the Ruin Sentinels, they're fucking hard. The Heide Knights (the sitting guys that only attack if you attack them) are probably the hardest enemy so far.

I just played a little further than you into NG+ and The Last Sinner is an absolute riot. Yet to beat him.

Flexile Sentry was a great NG+ boss.

I think I just beat one of those dudes tonight. NMear where I was talking about earlier on where you kinda get ambushed at the top of the ladder. Right at the start.

Benefit of those guys is they tend not to attack in an arc so you can just stay close and circle them tightly to avoid most attacks :) If it's the dude I think you mean

Yeah that's the one, although circling them certainly doesn't work without a shield.

Oh. Bummer.

Hey got a question for you (yeah I could look these things up but I'm worried about spoilers). As I die enemies seem to be spawning less. Is this by design? E.g. There's a guy at the base of a ladder, then one on the bridge, then three in a courtyard then a big dude. I get killed by the big dude 5 times then the first guy at the bottom of the ladder no longer appears. Die a few more and the guy on the bridge doesn't appear either.

Is this normal? Is there any way to make them come back? Kinda annoying esp as I was planning on doing some soul farming later on to level up.
