So, in Florida, there was this guy. He did some porn (legal). Kids at school found out about it and started sharing pics etc. A group went to bully him causing a ruckus which resulted in the guy getting a ten day suspension, just enough time for him to fail the year due to unacceptable attendance. People are up in arms over this with some seeing him as a hero (did porn to earn money to support family), some seeing him as an idiot (should have expected the circumstances) and others wondering why the school decided to get involved in that way at all.

There are a few "issues" here as I see it

1. Should you expect no ramifications if you do porn?
2. Are his reasons for doing porn relevant to the case?
3. Should the school have got involved the way it did (suspend the guy who was in the video, not the people who spread it arranged bullying).
4. Is the sentence too tough? Or would something shorter that didn't result in a year's failure be more appropriate?

Lots of opinions floating around on this. What do you guys think?

I think suspending him for causing a 'Campus Disturbance' is a ludicrous decision. The classmates bullying him are clearly in the wrong, and to punish the guy who did totally legal gay porn outside of school but not the numerous students bullying and harassing the guy comes across as deeply homophobic. If they'd suspended both the bullies (for being bullies) and the guy for doing porn (because it was against the school's code of conduct or something) then I could see that as being reasonable (Not that I agree that someone should be suspended for doing professional, legal adult work outside of school). As for the issues you brought up:

1. You should definitely expect social ramifications, you'd be naive as fuck if you didn't. However, you shouldn't expect legal or educational ramifications to this extent. There's no reason this should affect you graduating highschool like this, and I feel genuinely sorry for the guy. This is clearly collateral damage.

2. No, they're not. He did porn legally, and that's perfectly OK. The end. They are, however, relevant to which people/groups I think are in the wrong with this situation.

3. I don't think so, but I'm not surprised. I got talked to by my principal in year 12 for youtube rant videos I made outside of school. Didn't get in trouble or anything, but schools are well known for thinking they should control their students outside of school.

4. It's both too tough and inappropriate. He just shouldn't have been punished, period.

Here's my verdict on everybody:

18 year old pornstar: Innocent. He was entirely within his legal bounds.
His parents: Guilty as fuck. What kind of parents rely on their teenage son, who's in high school, doing professional pornography to get the household by financially? Truly shameful. It's not right to rely on the teenage son for money on any level in my opinion, yet alone in a way that they should know damn well would have consequences for him (whether they're fair or not).
The school: Guilty. Blatantly let a widespread case of bullying fly entirely, perpetuating homophobia in the process.
The bullies: Guilty. They're shithead teenagers, pretty self explanatory.
Fuck_Giver.exe has stopped working!
Does it matter how I write the truth?

Presumably you need to miss a lot more than 10 days to fail the year, so there are presumably other factors involved.

That said, the principal presumably knew the ramifications of a 10 day suspension, so it sounds a lot like a poorly thought out plan to get rid of someone perceived as a difficult student. Even if the principal doesn't approve of the student's actions, siding with the bullies is obviously the wrong choice.
