Cutting a long story short, I have gotten a promotion and will be pulling up stumps in Sydney and moving down to Melbourne!

I know a few of the people on this board are Victorians and wanted on opinion on areas I should look at buying/renting?

23 so wouldn't really want a place in the suburbs would prefer a place near the city and the night life!

There's a single room unit up for lease at our apartment complex here in Flemington http://www.realestate.com.au/property-apartment-vic-flemington-409708227

We're within walking distance to the local train station which gets you to the cbd in 5 minutes, and we're right next to the Flemington Racecourse if you have any interest in going to the melbourne cup.

Thanks for that man, am looking for a 2 bedroom bed though.

I'm looking around the flemington area now as it seems close enough for me to the city and not too far from work

What do you like in terms of nightlife?

If I were moving out again, I'd go for inner-Northern suburbs like Brunswick, Brunswick West, Coburg, Preston, Thornbury etc. They are reasonably priced, have culture out the bum, spacious houses (Greek/Italian brick and weatherboard cal bungs 1940s onwards), the best public transport and all the eateries you'd ever need in life. When people talk about Melbourne culture, they're talking about the CBD and the inner North.

If price isn't so much an issue, go even closer. Fitzroy/Northcote/Fairfield/Brunswick East have some of the best cafes and gig venues in the state (country, world) and are about five or 10 minutes from the city via public transport. I live in Clifton Hill, which is about six minutes from the city centre on a train.

If culture isn't your thing, go West. Flemington/Kensington/North Melbourne all have reasonably priced neighbourhoods and good public transport. They're a bit less heavy on gig venues but they have clubs and the food is cheaper.

East and South East are more expensive until you get further out so I wouldn't consider it. You'd have to go beyond Kew/Toorak/South Yarra/Balwyn/Hawthorn etc. to get an affordable place, and even then the leafy east won't leave you with much money for jam.
