So I now have fibre to the home and have signed up with iiNet for a 10/40 Mbps plan with Netphone2. Now I need a modem... well, I suppose I really need a router not a modem. Anyone got any advice? I've run Billion in the past and been pretty happy however my current modem doesn't suit (7800NL). Been considering this TP-Link one however I've never run their stuff. Whirlpopol users seem to like it but I was wondering what you guys thought

I'm not very good at searching whirlpool forums so probably missed a bunch. That Billion looks pretty sweet though too andbeing able to plug my phone directly in is nice. Not sure what the wireless is like in it though and it's not dual lik the TL.

What model? What internet speed? Are you running VOIP? What type of phone?

All the questions. Model is TL-WR1043ND.

My Dad has always taken care of our internet/phones etc. so I don't really know the details of the rest. We're on ADSL2+, internet speed is probably 25mb I guess, though obviously we don't get that.

We are running VOIP, though I can't remember if that is directly through the router or a separate box. I think it's just through the router now.

I can find out those details later today if you'd like though I doubt my Dad even rememebrs any of it.

Actually I don't think I have the Billion 7800NL as mine doesn't have a WAN port but that one does.

This model should be sufficient:

Lol. Thanks Twisted. I checked out my model (actually the BiPac 7800N) and it should have a WAN port on it. Theoretically this means I can just plug it in and be good to go. Then I'll just grab an ATA for the phones. Something like this I guess.

Pretty certain that's all I need. Guess I should check the speeds that unit is capable off eh? No point paying for 100/40 Mbps if my model can't handle it!

I'd LOVE one of those but my IBM compatible computer doesn't have a serial port and I can't get the USB <> Serial adaptor to work. Thanks for your input though

I've got a Billion BiPAC 7800VDPX: it's an ADSL modem, but also has an ethernet WAN port you could hook up to the NBN box.

It's worked pretty well for me, both for basic Internet and iiNet's VoIP. It has a decent CPU (dual core MIPS, IIRC), and 256 MB of memory (means the NAT table won't fill up). It supports dual band Wireless N and Gigabit wired networks, and can support a USB cellular modem for backup.

I used to have a separate modem and voice ATA, but found the ATA would often get confused when the modem reset. This meant that my phone line would be out until I reset the ATA too. This might not happen with the hardware you're looking at, but I've never run into the problem since I got a combined box. It knows to re-register with the SIP server when the connection comes back up, so things just work.

Of course, the alternative is to check whether iiNet can provision your SIP account through the NBN box's builtin telephony ports. If that's the case, then you shouldn't have to worry about voice support on your router.

If interested I went with the Billion BiPAC 7800VDOX. It was $60 cheaper than the VDPX but I have no need of the VPN capabilities and the rest of it seemed identical.

The new ATA was $65. The 7800 cost me $160 so I've spent an extra $95 but I know the iiNet NetPhone service works with this unit without issue. Saw many an entry on whirlpool with users having troubles getting it to work on their ATAs and having to disable security features of their router to allow it to work.

Whilst not a huge issue for a home it's something I can't be arsed mucking around with... plus I get a shiny new device for my shiny new comms cabinet in my shiny (4 year old) house :)

Do you need a modem/ router or just a router... the tp link you provided is a router on its own.
If you want top class router, i did hours of research and ended up with the Asus RT-n66u router.. Its by far the greatest I have owned.
There is the newer RT AC66u but not sure on its quality.

Just a router but, ideally, I wanted it to have the VOIP ATA in it too. That's a nice looking router dude, like the dual band too.
