I 'played' about five minutes at PAX last year and it hurt bad. I don't play Sonic games except that one from a few years ago that people really liked. |

I'm reading a number of people who say their five minute 'play' of Grow Home was enough for them to determine is was crap. However, we both know that it's a decent game. Perhaps you should give Sonic more of a chance

He didn't have a choice as some prick was hogging the Captain Toad thing on the screen beside him ![]() I think the lady also stooged him as she left him starting in the middle of a level rather than resetting it so he had a chance to get told what to do. That said I played that same demo - from the start - and I didn't enjoy it much either. I think Sonic games just aren't for me. |

I'm not a fan of Sonic at all to be honest, just never got into those games. Plus, the reviews for this particular Sonic game don't inspire me with any level of confidence and desire to buy it, let alone play it for a while. I'm glad that you've been able to enjoy it though. |

Sonic Generations was great. Dont even have any nostalgic attachment to Sonic other than laughing at tryhard Sonic kids back in the 90s for liking that cartoon and having a PC demo of Sonic 3 or 2 on PC, but it was a great, well rounded and wonderfully packaged platformer. |

I never thought Sonic worked as a concept. "Go really fast while only being able to see 3 metres in front of you!" I didn't like the feel of the movement, either. The jumping always felt really floaty and imprecise to me, and I hated how slow the acceleration felt. |

My problem is less with the idea and more with the execution of it. Levels were never designed to help you go fast and really be sonic going fast. They always felt like they were working against you. Compare it to Rayman Origins where you are always helped by the levels to go fast and speed run them. |

I think too many people enter Sonic games expecting to hold down the run button and it'll just work. Except for perhaps the classics, this isn't the way to play - especially the 3D Sonic games. You should enter each game expecting a different control scheme and once learnt you may appreciate the game more. |

Not really. In my opinion, the Sonic games (originals, not the newer ones as I can't really comment on them) always presented you with a character that has solid mechanics, but then throws everything and anything in your way to punish you in a world that is simply not designed for rewarding the player. You build up speed, then hit a button and get pushed into some spikes. It's punishing, but not punishing in a way that Rayman Origins is where it rewards you in the knowledge that it was your mistake that ended up with your death. |

I think the originals can be very rewarding. Like many 2D platformers, it's about trial and error. Once you've learnt the level, you're rewarded with the thrill of blasting through it. It's also a little unfair to compare them to Rayman Origins. How about the original Rayman? I believe it's far more difficult and punishing! |

The original Rayman is difficult and punishing for sure, but that's not my comparison. I feel that Sonic is a character who has always been disserviced by the game he's in. Trial and error is fine, but unfortunately it needs to be enjoyable trial and error which I have continually struggled to find Sonic as being enjoyable. I try it once a year to see if my feelings have changed, and most of the time they haven't. |

I don't follow. You first said you can't comment on the newer games, only the originals. However, now you say you've been keeping up with them? |

No, I try the originals once a year because they're supposed to be classics. |

Oh they are classics, but it sounds like you should stop beating that dead horse. Why not take a year off and play a something else? I recommend Sonic Team's NiGHTS. |
