"cinematography"
STAHP PLEASE

Just a pet peeve of mine when people talk about "cinematography" in a video game. It's not a thing.

Finally finished Bravely Default (78 hours). Fun ride at time but annoyingly repetitive for a large part too. Certainly a game with a decent story, fantastic gameplay and a lot of combat polish but the repetitive nature steers it well clear of the 5/5 scores I've seen it get.

I don't mean repetitive as in repeating the same style with variation in enemy/dungeon design... I mean repetitive as in EXACTLY the same boss fights and side quests repeated 5 times over! Sure some of the story changed a little and, in chapter 8 they bunched sub bosses together rather than kaing you fight them individually but it was still annoying.

Still, the gameplay was turn based RPG perfected! Little things like the ability to modify diffuiculty on the fly, change random encounters and set what carries over in new game plus show a team that have mastered their craft.

Finished LocoCycle. I agree with Kevin's review on GS but it wasn't bad and it was humorous. If you want something easy and quick to play then give it a go.

I've finished Thomas was Alone and unlocked all of the trophies on the PS3 and Vita version (cross-save). Not a particularly challenging game, but an achievement nonetheless, as the only other games I've completed 100% are Contrast and The Playroom!

It's fascinating how much character a rectangle can have with some clever writing and great voice acting.

I didn't love Thomas Was Alone. It was an ok platformer with a story that was narrated on top of it. Not a huge fan.

You should go for the Guacamelee platinum - or maybe not, the Goat challenges are pretty bloody hard, but very rewarding though.

Just finished the new dead rising 3 dlc and it too is a disappointment. Lucky if it's two hours long with an average story. Pretty diss appointed with both dlcs so far

I would argue that games do have cinematography. Uncharted's full of it.

Yeh, alot of games rely on their cinematography these days.

Cutscene direction would do it. The definition of cinematography involves using a physical camera and light, in a game this is all virtual so you can basically create any image you want. It's kind of an insult to cinematographers to call them the same thing.

I get what you're saying, but keep in mind that the Life of Pi won best cinematography at the Oscars last yer and that was mostly done on a computer.

This gets us onto that argument Smooth was having with his teacher about photos he wanted to use for his project.

You still use the same methods to achieve a visual experience. The only difference between doing it with film and via computer is that you arguably have more control with computer. I don't think the "purity" argument wins though as, if that were the case, people shouldn't be putting white in water to make rain apprear, using artificial lights, blah blah blah.

That said I do like "cutscene direction" although it doesn't have the same familiarity as cinematography does so probably wouldn't make it as a genre for awards. If it did it would almost need to replace cinematography as, in essence, isn't cutscene direction what cinematography is about anyways? It's the art of cinema. Sure it has "tography" in it so it should be film but does that mean digital cameras are not allowed an donly those who record on actual film are allowed to qualify?

I'll move this over to the Movie sectiona nd start a new topic.
