I finished off Grim Fandango Remastered over the long weekend. I ended up using more hints that I thought I would, but enjoyed the game none the less.

It is interesting looking at the PSN trophy percentages, which would indicate that only 1 in 5 players make it through the first of four years in the story line, and 1 in 10 make it through year 2. The numbers look a bit better on Steam, so this could just be people getting the game through PS+ and not actually being that interested in the game. It is quite a change from Telltale's recent games where they've reduced a lot of the puzzle based challenge in favour of keeping the story moving.

I didn't particularly like the second year area (Rubacava). It was fairly sparse, so I spent most of my time running from one end of the area to the other to progress the story, with the connecting screens being pretty much empty. It felt like needless padding, and I'd have preferred a smaller more dense city.

The updated graphics look quite nice, although in some places it seems to make the items blend into the background. Sometimes I would have to switch back and forward between he two graphics modes to detect things I could act on.

It is worth playing with a walkthrough at hand just for the story?

If you enjoy Tim Schafer's writing, then sure. The dialogue is entertaining, and the story would probably flow a bit better if you don't occasionally get stuck for half an hour trying to get past a choke point puzzle. If you don't like Schafer's work, it probably isn't worth it.

I'm also looking forward to Day of the Tentacle Remastered, which has more nostalgia value for me.

In that regard, I might play through it with a guide. I've been meaning to play it, but the puzzles just sounded too... obtuse for me.

Link's Awakening DX: I would've loved it as a kid. Playing it now it's interesting as the precursor to the more refined Ocarina of Time, which took a lot of ideas from it. LA isn't refined in the sense that there are several points where the next step forward is impossible to figure out without exploring the entire map to see what's changed (I threw in the towel and walkthroughed a few things), and layouts inside and outside dungeons are frustrating to navigate. But it's also crazy fun when things flow right, and its setting feels unique from Zelda in the way Majora's Mask does. And while I wouldn't applaud it too much for this, it's cool that an old 2D game contains a little emotional depth. There's a light sadness hanging over things, like the unexpectedly poetic line, "Human, monster, sea, sky -- a scene from the lid of a sleeper's eye." That second part sounds so nice I thought it was a quote, but nup it's original.

KEWL GAME. Next I'll play either the Oracle duo or LttP.

Day of the Tentacle: The only Tim Schafer game where I liked the majority of the puzzles because they didn't rely on flimsy logic or convolution. I did cheat right near the end for a couple of things; the amount of variables was so high that I was too impatient to run about trying every combination. The two puzzles that stumped me aren't connected, but the solution to either of them hints at the solution to the other, and since I couldn't work either out I was stuck.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Generally the puzzles are clever and witty, and I like how they are cartoony without being unreasonable. There's no story, really, while the comedy is fine but not as funny as Psychonauts or what I've seen of Grim Fandango. But I had much more fun playing it. One complaint: I wish EVERY item that's served its purpose would be deleted from the inventory. I assume they keep them there so you can seek out funny dialogue, but it's annoying when you've got stacks of stuff on-hand and don't know what's still pertinent to the game.

After a long ass break from the game, Witcher 3's Hearts of Stone DLC. It's pretty good, way above the quality and value of the vast majority of DLC out there. Despite ending a little bit anti-climatically I thought the story quality was the most engaging thing since the Bloody Baron story line. I really enjoyed the small expansion to Velen, and that there is about 10 hours of content for the money is very welcome. The only thing I thought that was a downright failure in this DLC was the Runewright. Whilst charismatic, he's just stupidly expensive to get set up (30k+), it doesn't even come close to justifying the cost considering the effects he can put on your weapons and armour are only side-steps from the greater runes you've already got access to.

Overall, I would certainly recommend. I'm really looking forward to Blood and Wine, the screenshots they released of the new city a while back look awesome.

I finished off Shadow of Mordor yesterday. I really liked the nemesis system with randomly generated orc captains, and other random enemies getting promoted to captains after killing you. It is a shame that there wasn't much more game left after they introduced the ability to brand orcs and manipulate the orc hierarchy.

I also found the ending a bit anticlimactic, the second last mission ended with a boss fight that essentially just involved sneaking up on an enemy multiple times, and the last mission ended with a QTE battle. In both of those missions, the battles against enemy orc captains were more enjoyable.

I just completed it as well. I might explore a little more and just complete some of those remaining side missions I have left over, including the hunting missions.

I got the GOTY edition so I have all the bonus content to get through as well.

As great as the nemesis system is in concept, I feel it was underused in Shadow of Mordor. And, unfortunately, it's also not a concept that really can be lifted and implemented in other games sadly. I'd like to see more done with that IP though as I did mostly enjoy my time with it.

I don't have the GOTY edition of the game (although if I'd bought it a bit closer to when I played it, I probably could have for the same price). The Bright Lord DLC looks interesting, but I'm not going to pay the asking price. I think I've had enough fun with the game.

I guess my main problem with the nemesis system was that it was fun trying to take over the ranks of orc captains and war chiefs, but it felt a bit empty afterwards. The world felt a lot less threatening, and there wasn't many things you could do with your branded captains other than help them complete their quests or command them to attack non-branded captains (after I'd taken control of all the war chiefs) -- which was something I could generally handle by myself at that point of the game. I guess I could have gone and killed them all and advanced time until there were more replacements, but it really felt like something more was needed to keep it interesting.

I guess it would have helped if the captains still felt like a threat at the end of the game. However, by that point the skills I'd locked and my experience with the game made even level 20 captains relatively easy to kill.

Just finished Mad Max.

Yeah it's OK, nothing special, but not bad. I enjoyed my time with it well enough, I found chasing the upgrades for the Magnum Opus had a pretty addictive quality to it. That's really what the game is all about (in both my subjective gameplay experience, but also the story), just building a dank whip. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of Assassin's Creed 4 in that regard, that game was literally just all about upgrading my ship. I did prefer Mad Max though since the on foot combat is a lot better (being Arkham style), it's a WAY better PC version than any existing AC game and I prefer the whole mad max flavour of V8s, apocalypse, cults and car worship. I really can't emphasise enough that building my car up was what really held the game together. Just look at how mean it looks! Shining in chrome bestowed upon the wasteland from the angel combustion! Praise be!

I would say though, the car combat isn't as enjoyable as AC's ship combat. Another thing is I felt the handling of the cars is pretty poor. It feels extremely heavy and sticky, excessively so. It's not a deal breaker since you're driving in pretty open areas mostly, but when you need some precision in an enclosed area it can be frustrating.

If you're really burned out on playing open world games I wouldn't recommend it as it's very much a bog standard go around and do all the things marked on the map type of game. Still, building the magnum opus was fun and satisfying and the mad max flavour and atmosphere was done well.

It's a competent game, for good and bad.

Finished Dark Souls 3. It's a sumptuous, sumptuous game brimming with surprise and delight. It looks like art, the combat is the series' high point (though I slightly prefer Bloodborne), the lore seems fascinating from what pieces I've pieced together so far, and all bosses except one crappy gimmick boss range from excellent to decent. I've had loads of fun with multiplayer in this game; there's so much variety and openness for creativity.

My mind might change with time and DLC, but as it stands I rank the series Dark Souls > Bloodborne > Dark Souls 3 >>> Dark Souls 2.

WARNING - PLATINUM TIER ALPHA ONE STATS AHEAD: I killed the final boss on the first try B) This is after the last optional boss killed me 23 times. I had an average of 4.6 deaths per victory, and 89 boss-related deaths total. I beat three bosses on the first try, and four on the second.

Yeah, there were two car chase areas in particular where that felt particularly annoying. The underground airport part and the final boss fight part 1 (where you're taking part in the race and the camera angle changes every time you throw a damn thunderstick)
