I finished off the main story of Assassin's Creed Unity over the weekend, so may as well gripe about it a bit. 1. The modern day storyline is almost non-existent. The end of AC3 set up Juno as the new big threat. She showed up briefly in AC4 as a consciousness in the Internet and was completely absent from Unity (or if she is there, I haven't found her). For this game, the modern day story can be summarised as follows: the Templars are searching for a historical McGuffin by trawling through the memories of some dude, you find out that they won't be able to find the McGuffin, so as the credits roll you're congratulated because this means they don't have to do anything. 2. The historical storyline is short and cliche. There are twelve sequences/chapters in the game, but most of the chapters only have two or three missions. Everything else seems to have been pushed out to co-op or "Paris Story" missions, which can be done in any order at any time, so seem to be somewhat detached from the main story. You never really see the heads of the Paris Brotherhood do anything, so it feels a bit hollow when they scold you: you get in trouble for not doing what they tell you, but they are hardly ever shown in a position to guide you. The story also has a Romeo+Juliet style romance subplot, and seems to be trying to show there are some good Templars and bad Assassins. The end result is a bit of a mess. 3. Fuck those red chests. Unity has a lot of colletables, even by Assassin's Creed standards, most of which are treasure chests. Early on, you'll find that you can't open the red chests because they are locked. At the end of chapter 2 you are allowed to purchase the lock picking ability though. That would let you open some of the red chests, but you'd soon find that there were chests that required level 2 lock picking to open, which you could only purchase after finishing chapter 5. After that, you'd find that many of the chests required level 3 lock picking, which had to wait until chapter 9 (i.e. three quarters of the way through the story). The end result is that while playing the game, you need to leave most of the collectables you encounter untouched. For most open world games, I try find the collectable as I find them on the map, so the presence of collectables on the map indicates a place I haven't explored. In Unity, you have collectables littering the map screen in both places you've explored and places you haven't. I might not have minded so much if the lock picking mini-game was fun. But unfortunately it is a booring reflex based game, not helped by input lag. I kind of wish they stole the version from Fallout. 4. Microtransactions screw up in-game economy While they had microtransactions in the multiplayer of previous AC games, they are in the single-player mode of the current one: all weapons and armour can now be bought with real money. And because they want you to buy things, the shops have all the armour available from the very start of the game, rather than build up to it as the game progresses. And unlike previous games where upgrades were pretty simple (want more smoke bombs? buy the smoke bomb pouch), now the upgrades are tied to pieces of armour, so you might need to choose between being able to hold extra lock picks or extra bullets. There are other changes that seem like they were made to help support microtransactions. For example, in previous games you could disarm an enemy and then start using it against them and their friends. But if all you have to do to beat a group of high level guards is to steal a high level weapon from one of them, why would you spend real money on a high level weapon of your own? It seems they fixed this by removing the ability to disarm enemies. 5. You are the only person in Paris who can climb In previous games, if you tried to escape from guards by climbing up a building, they would follow you. In this one, they don't, so if you successfully get on top of a building and crouch down out of sight, you are safe. It is also a bit comical how many houses have no ground floor entrance and no ladder or stair case. I'm guessing the people I find in these second floor apartments are doomed to live out their life never being able to leave. It isn't all bad though. I really liked the recreation of Paris. While there was some repetition of the building blocks for the houses, the streets didn't feel as repetitive as e.g. AC3's cities. Each area of the city felt like it had a different character, and the land marks like Notre Dame were pretty impressive. The climbing animations were a lot smoother than any of the previous games, and the ability to quickly climb downwards was quite useful. |

Just finished Shadow Of Mordor. Not bad at all, it started off pretty standard, and then I started to doubt it as it had some frustrating moments and I found some of the arbitrary mission design here and there a little questionable (Kill X guys in the time limit!). However, that built in to what was actually a surprisingly good sense of progression, which of course ties big time into the whole nemesis system. It's cool because the game will kick your ass and make you witness the persistent results of it. For example, an Orc Captain or Warchief might kill you when you try to assassinate him. He'll get stronger from doing so, and when you come back later for another try he'll taunt you about it. I think that was really cool. The best part of the game, I think, was when you get the ability to make Orcs your followers as you build an army. Taking over Mordor like a virus was just legitimately fun. Story was just meh, and very sequel bait ending, and the last two boss fights are very underwhelming; didn't care though. It's definitely an "about the journey" type game. Arkham style combat was pretty well done, and at times actually felt more satisfying due to the visceral killing you get to do. The Assassin's Creed style movement felt pretty solid, too. It controls great with KBAM and is a well optimised PC version (unlike ass creed). Ultimately it's a game that starts off very standard and seemingly a bit flawed but builds into something more unique and in some ways considerably more satisfying than those it borrows heavily from. I liked it. Well, back to MGSV. Edited by Doomguy, Oct 7 2015, 12:18 AM.

Well now I'm double finished with Dark Souls II. Actually downloaded the game again with the intention of finishing it (exactly what I did with the first game, I stopped playing it for a few months before returning to conquer it) but it turns out the game doesn't have cloud save functionality and I didn't back up my save, so RIP. I can deal with it though, I still maintain that DS was the better game, despite the parts of 2 that were improved. I stopped playing 2 due to burnout, and the chore-like nature of retrieving those stupid giant's souls. The late game pacing was simply inferior to the first game's. I still got to experience the vast majority of the game anyway. Guess I'll just wait til 3 for more souls action. I would like to play Bloodborne, though. It and The Last Of Us are the only games I can think of to put on the list of reasons to actually buy a current gen console, so maybe one day. |

Did you finish Dark Souls? I thought that was easily the worst final few hours of any of the Souls games. Demon Ruins, Lost Izalith and The Kiln of the First Flame are the most lazy, bland areas in any of the games. |

Curt if you have a Dark Souls save about midway through the game you should look up how to access the DLC area because it's a good five hours or so with some excellent bosses.

Yeah, I did. The only one I had an issue with was the Kiln of the first flame, and the final boss for being really short and way too easy. I was actually stunned after that boss because I wouldn't have expected in a million years that it was the final boss. I beat it first try without breaking a sweat, and thought it inconceivable that there wasn't some other way tougher form after it. I was legitimately surprised when the game was over. And no, Moo, I don't have saves at all unfortunately. I don't own the DLC anyway, and probably wouldn't buy it, honestly. I strongly disliked what a chore it was to access DLC in the first game and ended up just giving up and not bothering. Edited by Doomguy, Oct 14 2015, 03:15 PM.

I was referring to the first game. I still have to get around to DS2 DLC. Accessing DS1 DLC isn't a chore, though its 'hiding place' is ridiculously obscure. I get why you don't wanna play 10-15 hours just to access it though. |

Finished Life is Strange. Not the best ending and I kinda saw it coming with all the iconography thrown into the game about this. I've already said much about the series, but it's gonna go down as one of the most memorable adventure games I've played despite some of its gameplay stumbles.. |

Just finished Tales from the Borderlands. Not a plot spoiler. Here's where it ranks amongst Telltale's adventures they've done, at least amongst the ones I've played. Spoiler: click to toggle Highly recommend it :3 Edited by Red Panda, Nov 10 2015, 12:53 AM.

Finally finished Broken Age. Managed to recover an old save using my PS4. Despite thinking I was over point and click adventures I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit. These games normally go down the "obscure solution" path however, while Broken Age did that too, it wasn't ever as obscure or unclear as the older style games like S&M Hit the Road or even DOTT. My main gripes with Broken Age were 1. Puzzle delivery/pacing 2. Errors 1. Puzzles were ok for the most part however sometimes the animated sections got in the way of enjoyable resolution. Re-wiring the Hexipals near the end was a perfect example. You had to time things just right else you were taken back to a point 5 minutes prior and had to repeat your actions all over again. Not overly enjoyable in a game that involves a bit of trial and error to find the right solution (when it's not immediately apparent). That was a good example of a point where it wasn't immediately apparent too. It wasn't clear to me until after the event why Vella or Shay were doing what they were doing. They had no way to know that would be the outcome so it still didn't make sense... but anyway. This was more apparent in the second half rather than the first though. The first felt much more structured and well paced with only a few instances where I had to figure out the solution by experimenting with what I was able to do rather than forming an idea and trying it out. There was one point where they broke their own "rules" though which was a little frustrating. For the first hour or two the game had taught me that I couldn't make a mistake. If I could give an item to a person then they were meant to have that item; if I'd finished with an item the charcter would discard it; etc. etc. There's a point where you can give away one of your items however you need it to solve a puzzle. Giving it away serves no purpose I could find and it's the only time in the whole game you can do it. Very strange 2. Errors. Playing on Vita I had the game crash very regularly. I wasn't able to play without an active internet connection which sucked (and was a little inexplicable) and I had a major fault near the end where my screen went black after a cutscene and I couldn't progress. Luckily I found that, choosing load game on PS4, I was able to go back to a previous checkpoint save so I could recover my game. Had to finish it on PS4 though rather than Vita. Wonder if anyone else had that issue. Aside from those (which make me sound like I hated the game) I really liked it. The story was interesting (again moreso in the first half), the characters well designed and the voice acting really nice. The art style was really nice however I found it a bit jarring when there were closeups of the main character talking to an NPC. The NPC would always be "jaggy" while Shay or Vella always looked fully rendered. Anyway, an enjoyable P&C game. 7.5 out of 10 for me. Would be 8 except the errors on Vita knock it down another half point.

Glad you came around to it in the end. I still think it's one of the years best games and has a superb storyline which I don't think could be told in any other format. |

I polished off the last two episodes of Game of Thrones. Those Forresters were dropping like flies towards the end: I think I only had three left. I probably could have saved a few more, but by the end I was getting sick of the lose-lose choices the game throws at you. I am kind of curious how much things would have turned out different if you played the entire game with submissive/diplomatic choices all the way through. The way the game played out for me, it felt like tragedy and defeat were inevitable, and I was only ever putting it off rather than averting it. That might fit well with some stories from the GoT books and TV show, but it felt like there were too few cases where you were actually victorious. And after looking at how other choices might affect the game, I didn't particularly like the way they handled the Forrester traitor: Spoiler: click to toggle

Would you recommend it overall? I'm tossing up between that and Tales from Borderlands, though I might get both while they're cheap on PS4. |
