I finished Virtue's Last Reward. I can see why it got all the praise it did. I was a little sceptical about how well a game that is essentially just cut scenes separated by a few puzzles could hold up, but its story carries the game. Apparently the sequel is coming out next year, so I'll be sure to pick that up.

The game plays a bit like a choose your own adventure book, but if you stop when you hit an "end", the game would seem pretty unsatisfying. Despite offering numerous choices as you work your way through the story, you need to explore every branch in order to fully understand what's going on and see the true ending. Some branches go well, while others go less well:

The game makes it pretty easy to jump to any branch of the story that you've previously played, and you'll find places where you can only continue by using information you learned from a different branch. It also becomes apparent that this is more than just a game mechanic.

If you've got a Vita or 3DS, it's definitely work checking out.

I finished Earthbound. The highlight is the zaniness. It's effortlessly weird. The world feels like it was ripped from a child's storywriting. It's not as emotionally resonant as Mother 3, but there's a tinge of loneliness to the proceedings that's hard to describe, as if the world is Ness' escape from his lonely childhood (it's implied he's the child of divorced parents) that nevertheless physically manifests his feelings in subtle ways. It's also very funny, with a lot of interesting wordplay. It's the kind of game I wish I'd played as a kid.

Finished Batman: Arkham Knight the other day and wrote a butt numbingly long review about it. It's... ok.

Look forward to reading it. The game's surprisingly lukewarm reception has made waiting for the PC version to be unfucked very tolerable. I don't feel like I've missed out on much. It can't be worse than Origins, surely, and that isn't even a bad game.

I'm curious... what did you think of the Batmobile? ;)

Cynically - I had a thought that the reason why the Batmobile figure was cancelled was because it would be not that well liked. I'd have been annoyed if I had bought it and been stuck with something that just was not that good.

Finished Until Dawn last night. Fantastic game!

Was extremely linear with very little deviation and most paths determined by choices (one of two), or success in QTEs. There were some other path changes I noticed like finding clues resulting in differences in dialogue/automated decisions by characters which was nice.

The first half of the game certainly feels stronger than the second. Once you learn what's going on the tension shifts and it feels a little drawn out. Still enjoyable but there were two sections near the end where I just felt we were walking along long corridors for the sake of jump scares.

Atmosphere is fantastic helped very much by the Resident Evil style character control and virtual camera virtual anges - or virtual cinematography if you prefer (did I use the word virtual often enough so as not to piss off film students this time? :) ). The music, voice acting and atmosphere were all stellar. Jump scares in the right places and balanced well.

I managed to have three guys survive. Two deaths were the result of me not totally understanding the actions and one was a failed QTE... that one was also the most graphically horrible

description of the death (not who it was or where)

There were a few inconsistencies which I can't explain.Killer behaviour altering early game versus late game for instance (I assume to build tension earlier on). However these were very minor and didn't detract from my experience.

The format was fantastic. Each chapter is done like a TV show. 30-45 minutes-ish each ending with a session with a psychiatrist where you discuss what's going on and answer how it makes you feel.

Anyway - I loved this game! But, keep in mind, I also really enjoyed Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. The story in Until Dawn felt considerably better as the other two were full of holes and shock value scenes - Until Dawn had a few smallish things like that but they certainly weren't the focus.

Anyway I strongly recommend it. Can't wait to get back into it and try some different decisions.

Funnily enough I actually had a job a couple of weeks ago doing the cutscenes for a video game. I still have the same stance on the subject but it was interesting seeing the different problems you run into when trying to make a cutscene in-game.

Yeah, I imagine many issues would arise when you have to live up to the much higher standards of cinematography in video games over film.

Didn't read all your message due to possible spoilers but definitely want this game.

What was the character and voice work like? Part of the appeal to me is that the cast are Hollywood actors, certainly not A listers but I know a few of them from various TV shows and movies.

Just finished Super Metroid. Occasionally frustrating and definitely more cryptic at times than the Prime games, but certainly a great, gracefully aged game in it's own right. Certainly the best SNES game I've played yet.

I gave up on Ridley because I couldn't avoid him, but it's definitely a great game that's held up over time.

Yeah, Ridley was tough, but the spring ball and power bomb combo fucks his ass up. I did read that allegedly if you get through the encounter with him at the start of the game with 30 health or more he's significantly weakened for the fight at the end. I think I survived that encounter at the start with only 1 health, though.

I kept it pretty spoiler free. Even the spoiler bit doesn't do anything except describe a death - doesn't even say who :)

Voice acting is top notch! They all do a great job of portraying their particular characters well. Lot's of emotion in the right places, tone and inflection all spot on.
