The last game I finished was Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition is great great fun. As someone who doesn't particularly get strategy turn based games, I found I managed to not die too often here. Review coming soon.

That was last month. Wish it'd been for Vita though. I was keen to play but not on my PS4

I finished playing Ratchet & Clank (the first one) on the Vita. I hadn't played the originals before, so it was interesting seeing where the series began, but at the same time it was quite frustrating compared to the newer games. Some of it was just due to the age of the game, such as how sparse the checkpoints are compared to more recent games, but other issues just seemed like bad design that was fixed in later releases.

The biggest problem was how bad the aiming was, which I found surprising for a series that is well known for its diverse set of guns. In normal play, Ratchet shoots in the direction he is facing, which is usually not the same direction the camera is facing. You can switch to first person aiming by holding down the left shoulder button, but that means stopping in place, opening yourself up to attacks. I really missed the aim-with-the-camera mode and the ability to strafe when playing the game.

The magboots also seemed more frustrating than in later games. I think this was partly down to the magnetic paths being quite narrow, and the fact that Ratchet has a bit of a turning circle that could make it more difficult to steer away from the edges.

And lastly, there was a Vita specific complaint: since the Vita doesn't have a second set of shoulder buttons, they mapped small regions of the rear touch pad to L2/R2. For the most part this didn't matter because those buttons aren't used for most of the game. Then I got to the hoverboard race where L2/R2 are used to perform tricks. I'd try to turn a corner, and continue straight off the edge of the track while performing some trick because my hand was accidentally touching the active region of the touch pad.

I agree in a way, but the bigger screen with your TV rather than the Vita helps a bit.

Uhh so over the last 2 weeks I finished:

Ori & the Blind Forest
Her Story
Walking Dead Season 2

Where to start?

lol
Bit late, but more on these.

Ori & The Blind Forest: The best 2D platformer since Super Meat Boy (Yes, better than Rayman). And one of the best Metroidvanias. It's hard, gets clever with its mechanics in the instanced zones, but it is mostly fair. It just has a nice flowing feel to the game overall, with varied abilities that are implemented well that makes the usual Metroidvania backtracking enjoyable and progressive with new mechanics to get from place to place. Combat is simple compared to other recent metroidvanias like Guacamelee or Valdis Story, but it was really enjoyable with how focused it is on movement and platforming. Your basic attacks are homing projectiles that allows you to hit enemies while retaining a platforming course without annoyance, then you get all these cool moves to enhance your plaftforming when confronted with enemies - rewarding you with the engamement to launch you to places, for example. It's hand painted art looks so wonderful too. And it is complemented by a simple but effective Ghibli inspired tale and a rich, memorable orchestrated score.

If there is one issue with Ori, it's that some of its soft hand painted art assets can get in the way. In rare occasions, foregrounds dont seem to match or communicate well the collision area of a hazard at times (like thorns of a branch), while at others, the are just too many bright glowy bits everyone that can distract when you're fighting a few enemies. Also, be careful about the stomp skill as the trigger can be sensitive.

Her Story: It's a weird one. Very True-Detective-y. But I'd highly reccommend it nonetheless, especially at the price it's offering (It was $5 when I got it). It's a srs bsns FMV game with the lead role completely nailing the performance. The game involves simply going through a data base of well-edited videos of a few police interviews using different search queries, where one detail in the video leads to the next search either by what was said or even noticed. It manages to be non-linear and compelling piecing together something so chronologically jumbled in a very Memento-esque way. For reference, I had 3 A4 pages of written down note-taking, which could be a credit to the game or a issue in that it needed better in-game features to keep track of records and details you pick up. There's no real concrete 'finish' or 'closure' to it, which may be off putting. You finish the game either by completing and seeing everything, or once you figure out what happened on your own.

-

Walking Dead Season 2: Predictable in its QTEs and choice-making. Doesnt live up to the first season but it was still rather enjoyable and stands on its own. My biggest complaint is that it felt rushed, with very little to interact with compared to season 1, where the simple act of object interaction fleshed out both Lee and the locale you're in.

That drove me nuts. Had to hold the Vita in an uncomfortable fashion just to be able to ensure I didn't accidently press the "buttons"

^ That's what's turned me off playing the God of War Vita versions as I believe they have the same thing in place.

Super Mario 3D World is a blast in 2 player, though I imagine the single player experience would be underwhelming after the Galaxy games. It feels more like Super Mario World than Galaxy, actually.

Got 100% in Ori and the Blind Forest. Very satisfying to do so, and it was just a lot of fun to blast through it for a second time. It's likely to go down as a GOTY contender in a few categories.

Moo-mar: I didn't play World but Land on the 3DS was great. Hard to compare it to SMG, but it was almost just as enjoyable.

It's right near the start. You put the little spark thing in there and are meant to press X but it doesn't work. I've tried without controller, tried alt tabbing out and back in, tried lots of things all without success!
