Finished SteamWorld Dig this morning. Such a fun game. Small and kinda mindless but really enjoyable. Wouldn't have even played it if I'd not got it for free with PS+ but am glad I did.

The Evil Within (PC)...decent game but not wow...nothing new. Its similar to RE4 type . The main character not as cool..as RE4. In game characters animation kinda choppy..not smooth. DLCs in coming already *sigh* ...guess should have waited GOTY edition.

Bayonetta & Bayonetta 2..you can clearly tell the fight mechanics have been improve ..more smooth or flowy in 2. I enjoyed it..its fast enough for me (ninja gaiden was too fast for this old man) :p

I've polished off a few games from my pile over the holidays:

Beyond: Two Souls - I had fun playing this, although it definitely had its issues. It didn't have the same kind of stupid plot twist as Heavy Rain (something that effectively made it impossible for you to guess who the murderer was before the end of the game), but Willem Dafoe's character seems to have a fairly abrupt personality change towards the end (even more so if you reorder the scenes back to chronological order).

When playing as Ellen Page's character the controls are pretty much the same as Heavy Rain, but with simpler QTE inputs. You can also play as Aiden (her ghost friend), who floats around pushing things and can possess people (except when the game decides he can't do these things for story reasons, which is more often than I'd like). For the most part it works pretty well, but gets a bit frustrating in segments that play more like a traditional game. For instance, during the combat you're meant to input commands to attack or dodge when the game slows down based on the visual cues. However, in some cases it feels like either option might be appropriate but you'll end up getting hit if you choose the wrong option.

And the mission in Somalia has a stealth segment where you are meant to sneak through the city without being spotted, using Aiden to scout ahead. At one point I was at the bottom of a ladder and could see that there was a guard at the top who would be able to see me if I climbed up. I couldn't interact with anything as Aiden, so it wasn't clear what to do. In the end it turned out that the guard was scripted to walk forward when you climbed the ladder, so you'd be able to take him out unseen.

Infamous: Second Son - I've done a good karma play through, and have started on the evil one. It certainly looks prettier than the previous games, but I think I preferred Infamous 2: the two karma paths seem a lot more similar than in the second game (where one had ice powers and the other fire powers). The new protagonist is a bit grating too: it kind of feels like a large corporation trying to design a "cool" character by committee. And the attempt to mirror real world social issues in the game comes off very heavy handed.

I also really hated one aspect of the final mission in the game. All through the game you collect blast shards that are used to upgrade your powers. I had collected enough to fully upgrade all my powers prior to starting the last mission. However, when you reach the final battle you get locked into an entirely new power set that hasn't been upgraded. If you have spare blast shards, you can upgrade it, so in effect you're rewarded for either collecting way more blast shards than you needed before the mission, or for not spending your blast shards on other upgrades.

After more than 60 hours, I've finally completed Valkyria Chronicles III. If you're interested in playing it, check out eBay for the Japanese version and then do a search on how to patch it with a fan translation. Otherwise, you'll have to continue to pray that Sega will localise it!

Like the previous two games, it's got a great story and excellent gameplay. However, it recycles too many maps from the VC2, which you'll play over and over throughout the game. Also, the fan translation has a few issues, but I see they've been making updates since I applied the patch. They were minor and mostly typos or text alignment issues.

That map recycling thing was the main reason I gave up on VC2 :(

Not ashamed to admit Valiant Hearts had me in tears by the end! Such powerful and emotional storytelling. The score and gameplay were utilised perfectly to create an amazing emotional adventure. One of the most engaging and best I've ever played!

Just finished Cave Story+, a very charming little 5 hour game. I really enjoyed it. It may have ignited an interest in 2D platformers for me, now.

Haha, I actually am going to try Rayman Origins again. I just couldn't get into it last time but I don't think I was really in the mood for it, though.

I played Rayman Origins for a couple of hours and it didn't really click with me all that well. Not sure what it was either, I thought I would love it.

Maybe try Legends then? Origins is, comparatively, a superior version but Legends felt like it was paced better to me. I found LEgends easy to get into and enjoyed Origins more AFTER finishing Legends. Not at all sure why but there you go

Legends is much easier than Origins. Give Legends a shot. And Guacamelee! too.
