Oh, it's not a bad game, I just have no drive to go back and continue playing it. I'm shootered out.

Aside from Army of 2 Devil's Cartel with Nickosaurus (which is awesome stupid fun btw) and Killzone I've been avoiding shooters so I'm not burnt out when I start :)

Finished Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel last night. Whilst I had a blast playing it I think that was largely due to the fact I played the entire campaggin co-op with Nickosaurus. If I'd played it by myself I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much as it's a bit of a plain shooter. They've dropped all the fun customisation and "bro stuff" from the first two games and seem to be trying to take themselves more seriously now... or they've just become incredibly more subtle about laughing at themselves. It's sad in a way as they've taken almost everything that made them unique and changed it so they're just another third person shooter. Story was crap and had every video game and action movie cliche you could think of thrown into it.

Felt good to play and was good to chat with Nick and make fun of the cutscenes all the way thru but, unless you have someone to play it with and just want mindless action and something to laugh at, I'd probably give it a miss.

At least they left the mask customisation in there so I could play in my "Green Knight" attire :)

I just finished Metal Gear Solid, that post credits dialogue is nuts! This game is so ridiculous! But it's so good.

I still love that every boss battle is unique and they're all pretty memorable. I always thought this was supposed to be primarily a stealth game, but there aren't many stealth sections when you think about it. Either way, it's all about the boss fights and they're great.

Though I should say that the final on rails sequence is not very fun.

Finished Hyrule Warriors last night. I was already a fan of Dynasty WArriors so it's no surprise I enjoyed it. I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it quite as much as I did though. Felt much more structured than DW and the Zelda Dungeon type fights were great. Even the final boss had that thing of using all the strategies you learnt from the other bosses in game.

Considering the $20 DLC although might need to read up on it first and see how big it is.

I finished playing as much of Skyrim as I feel like doing for the foreseeable future. There is still a bunch of entries in the quest log, but I've finished off most of the main quests and a good chunk of side quests.

I finished off the Dragonborn expansion over the last two weekends, and it was definitely the best of game's DLC. There was a definite Lovecraft vibe to the new enemies. Exploring the black books was also a fun change, allowing for some more abstract maps than what's found in the rest of the game.

I hadn't played any of the previous Elder Scrolls games, but had played the two Bethesda published Fallout games. The minimalist HUD in this game was nice, but the controls felt a bit more clunky than those two. In particular, I found myself pausing combat quite often to change weapons. It was nice that you could favourite weapons and spells so you wouldn't have to bring up the full items/magic menus, but bringing up the favourites menu also paused combat. And from the favourites menu you could only assign two entries to quick select slots. In contrast, I had 8 quick select slots to customise in Fallout 3/New Vegas. This basically meant I could only easily switch between a main weapon and a bow during combat. I don't know what it would have been like to focus on magic and want to easily switch between a range of spells.

Over all though, I enjoyed it and it kept me interested for about 3 months of play time (interspersed with a few other games).

I wonder how much Ritalin Kojima would need to write a normal script.

I'm certainly looking forward to the story continuing in MGS2 and I hope that a lot of the little annoying things as a result of the dated game design in the first game are gone, or at least improved on.

I think Kojima would need to do a heap of cocaine to have a sort of cancelling out effect on his craziness.

And I'm watching the on rails sequence through the tunnel again and ugh, that just wasn't fun. I mean it's kinda cool that you're escaping the base that is going to be nuked at any moment. It's just not very fun and the knockback animation that you take each time you get hit is so long and annoying and if you get hit once you might find yourself being hit multiple times in quick succession and it becomes this awful cycle.

I also just looked it up and apparently the ending is different if you choose to submit during the torture sequence earlier in the game. Kinda weird that the alternate ending is triggered at such an early stage but it's cool anyway.

I really like Super Bunnyhop's critical close-ups of the first three Metal Gear Solid games. They're close to feature-length, too. Also, spoilers (duh).

Critical Close-up: Metal Gear Solid (part 1)
Critical Close-up: Metal Gear Solid (part 2)

Almost forgot. Matthewmatosis' somewhat long-winded reviews of the games are nevertheless interesting. Once more, spoilers.

I really must go back and play #4. I played 1 thru 3 last year for the first time and totally meant to play the fourth but never got around to it.

Good reviews there, I found myself disagreeing with the bunnyhop one in a couple of places. He was a bit overly critical of the early stealth sections but I think if you play them properly they're not much of a problem.

The second guy has a great point on the major twist in the game kind of not making sense in the gameplay, ie that everyone is trying to kill you but they don't really want you dead because they want you to activate the Metal Gear. It's a large oversight but it's still a cool twist.

Didn't realise it until the second guy mentioned it but each area in the game is completely different to the last one and that's really cool. They're all fairly distinct from each other, no room looks the same. Even though there really aren't many areas, you won't see the same thing twice.

Wolfenstein: The New Order. My current game of the year. Wow. Just a great shooter all round. It doesn't revolutionise the genre, but what it does it does so damn well. The shooting is spot on. The enemies are intelligent and enjoyable to kill. The graphics are phenomenal. It doesn't shy away from gore. And most importantly, the story is fucking great. It's got some great characters and has some great villains as well that you just love fighting against. Bring on the next one - and if the villain I think it would be
Spoiler: click to toggle
then it's going to be a killer sequel. This is how you reboot a franchise. 9.5/10

With that said though, replaying the first level shows there's a few things that they didn't maintain throughout the game - lockpicking and taking down the big guys silently - but that's ok because I don't think the game suffers for it.
