Yep, a great game indeed. It's the only game I can think of where the controls actually help the story telling.
Fuck_Giver.exe has stopped working!
Does it matter how I write the truth?

For anyone who's played both Brothers and Mother 3, which one do you think has a more emotional climax?

Finished Ratchet & Clank Nexus on the weekend. Started it about a year ago, got bored and played something else. Went back yesterday, killed two guys and a boss then saw the credits. Dammit! I was that close and never realised! Lol.

Decent game but they seem to be running short on ideas. Story was pretty meh and the levels didn't have that personality I felt the others in the series did. Also enemies and bosses just took ridiculous amounts of hits to kill so the game was lengthened unecessarily and became boring.

Still fun but a long way from the best of the series.

I'd put Mother 3 ahead by quite abit. It just had more time to build and develop and it has a strong script to back up its emotional rollercoaster; I think it also helped that I named the characters in Mother 3 with people I knew. But I still loved Brothers' simple but well presented bittersweet adventure, it felt large and perfectly paced. I particularly liked how Brothers used the controls as some metaphor.

But I'll be hard pressed tossing up between Mother 3 and To the Moon, in terms of its emotional heights.

I've never even heard of Mother 3. Are you guys talking about the Gameboy game?

Yeah I'd pick Mother 3 too, and I also give it props for handling sentimentality with more tact than virtually every other RPG. On paper the ending could easily have come across as cheesy and contrived, but somehow they pull it off and it punches you in the gut.

Chickan, Mother 3 was never released outside of Japan but it's possible to get a very well-made fan translation online. It's a very unique, sweet, funny game where you literally trip on mushrooms at one point in what I think is a really dark parody of Link's Awakening.

Played Gone Home today and it was excellent. It's such an amazing way to tell a story and the story itself is fantastic too.

I'd love to see more of this sort of game. Who else played it? What did you think?

It has its flaws, but I liked Gone Home. The idea of creating an environment where the player puts the story together through different objects found through out the environment was nice. It challenges preconceptions and it was unusually unsettling. Three ring binders aside, it has one of the most authentic 90s settings in a videogame.

But I didnt think its narrative was as compelling as the experience of trying piece its story together. It was like I was playing through a narrative written by someone who writes American Beauty fanfiction. Some of the more interesting discoveries that you think would add tension or drama were brought up and completely cast aside: Like peer pressure, Religious rejection or the stuff with the father. I felt that it made some of my discoveries somewhat unrewarding. But it still surprised me in more ways than one. What I did like was its conclusion.

Even though I liked it, I'd be upset if I paid $20 for it.

I also think I enjoyed the base storyline about Sam much more than you did, but that's just preference I guess. I thought it was great and very touching. It helps that it was so well written and voice acted too.

$20 was a steep asking price for the game. I think $10 would be an ideal price or $15 at the most. I paid $5 and it was definitely worth it.

The voice acting was certainly strong and convincing.

I think Sam's story arc was still worth experiencing and it was enjoyable to follow. It's well above average for a lolvideogame story. I kinda just expected abit more for it to stand out, making it more memorable and compelling. But it does have its charms in being a rather humble slice of life story with a nice conclusion.

Fair opinion to have on the story, it resonated with me quite a bit and felt a strong connection to the characters.

It's so rare for me to be that into a video game story and actually care about characters so I guess when it does happen I might become a little more generous with my opinions on the game but whatever.

Gone Home was pretty overrated.
