Finished Enslaved: Oddysey to the West late last night.

It's a beautiful and well paced adventure that's a great showpiece of audiovisual craftmanship, yet lacking in design. The accusations of style over substance unfortunately rings true for Enslaved. The game's core mechanics are really shallow and often sloppy: its combat, puzzle solving and platforming look better than they actually play. Yet, despite the lack of high points in the middle of the game, Enslaved has really strong pacing, variety and surprisingly interesting scenarios that are tightly intertwined with its events and characters. With tightly packed cutscenes and even a orchestrated soundtrack that understands the value of subtlety and silence. It gives Enslaved just enough doses of consistent excitement throughout Monkey and Trip's endearing journey through to its interesting conclusion.

What sticks out in Enslaved's design is its complete lack of trust in the ability of the player. While Enslaved presents a wonderfully told and presented journey, it's afraid that a player wont experience that and see it through to the end; crafting its game around deliberate hand-holding that ultimately become intrusive. Platforming across vistas and heights is unsatisfying as Monkey cant miss a jump. The erratic auto-lock system often leaves you charging up and hitting the wrong enemy. The over-abundance of cover can spoil its wonderful aesthetic. Forced walking rears its ugly head through traversing inside tight spaces. Points of no return becomes a harness that limits any form of exploration or tech orb/mask hunting. Worst of all, the camera stumbles more than it aids the player; making the camera itself a conflicting fight for control.

Despite its fumbles. Enslaved is a journey worth playing and telling that delivers itself lightly. And that's what Enslaved is: It's a light game that--at the very least--wants you to sit back, relax and take the wonders of its journey in. It's a strong 7/10

Note: Not the greatest PC port (setting menu is lacking, no rebindable inputs and the resolution options dont work), but there is a nice single config file that makes the game run smooth as butter and apply/change different things to make it look great.
