Fair call. I quite like the lack of hand-holding but I'm talking from the position of someone who's played the series for ages. Unlocks give you a message with a reason so I guess it's not unfair to assume the same would be said for new characters etc. I don't think they should give you the scale though. Also couldn't hurt to have a quick tutorial race for newcomers that teaches you how to boost jump, boost start, boost slide (2 stages), etc. Pretty certain they never did anything like that in Super Mario Kart but they had a different audience and different capabilities back then so it hardly applies anyway |

A learner race would be good to teach you the ins and outs of the game. I think maybe instead of a scale there should be an item page or stats page for the characters and kart items where you have a list of what is unlockable and also what you need to do to unlock them. |

Maybe a little bit, but it's more that the progression part of it feels hidden and tucked away. It was the same with Mario Kart Wii as well. It doesn't take away from what a great game it is, I just wish that the game would tell me what I need to do to unlock them rather than me doing a google search. |

I guess it doesn't bother me too much in that case as all you need to do to unlock everything is play. I felt it was obvious there'd be a reward of sorts for winning 1st in every race so the only thing you really need to Google is those gold parts. Can certainly see your point though |

Just finished Ico. It's an ok game - not as great as I thought it might be. Very tedious to navigate with the companion at times. Nice looking game, ok ending. Certainly not as good as Shadow of the Colossus for sure. 6.5/10 |

It was a great game for its time. Many people talked about it as a 3D Prince of Persia done right (this was before Sands of Time was released). There are a few bonuses if you play through a second time too: 1. subtitles for Yorda and the Queen, so you can actually understand them. 2. a light sabre weapon that grows when you are holding Yorda's hand. 3. watermelon at the end (you'll need to search along the beach a bit). |

I can see why people liked it then. It's not bad, it's just not the great game that people say it is. I will give it a second run through though given my first run through only lasted three hours so I should be able to do the under two hour trophy. |

It looks just as suggestive as you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0WY8nvsOIc&t=1m30s
Three hours is quite short for a first run of the game. If you were rushing through, perhaps that's why you found Yorda annoying? The intent of of the game designers was for the player to form an emotional bond and want to protect her. Edited by jamesh, Jun 20 2014, 03:00 PM.

I don't think I was rushing. The puzzles were easy to figure out and navigating was easy. There were points with Yorda where I'd be climbing up a ladder and she'd start following me, and then I'd get to the top and move aside so she could climb up and then she would climb all the way back down again. Maybe I played the game wrong (if there is such a thing as that) in avoiding fights as much as possible because that's what I thought I was meant to do. |

Finished Gunpoint and Guacamelee Gold Edition Guacamelee Gold Edition Guacamelee was excellent. It's a Mexican themed Metroidvania styled game that strikes a good balance of 2D action and platforming very well. It relies on the timing of skill inputs over precise momentum to keep combat tight and responsive. Combat is straight up 2D Bayonetta. It just has a natural and responsive flow to it that's very tacit to what is happening on screen. Once you get the hang of it, combos become natural and completely devoid of having to use muscle memory. Headbutt feels out of place. The game's biggest flaw is that the enemy designs could have served to be better, some enemies are just passive buzzkills and others are inconsistent in terms of communicating what you can and cannot dodge, bosses included. The writing was hilarious and throwing in Johnny Bravo from the Steam Workshop was just too funny. Part of me wished that Guacamelee was complete with voice acting in a similar manner to Eddie Gurrero, the other part tells me that it would probably get old really fast. I'd give it a light 9 - Gunpoint Gunpoint doesnt make a good first impression. You're met with a sonically empty introduction. The game encourages you to play it at 1280x720 as the art assets were designed that way. And to top it off, it doesn't really hide the fact that the game is running on the GameMaker engine all that well. Once get over that initial hump, Gunpoint is fantastic. It's a Steath-Puzzle game that revolves around hacking, rewiring, trickery and (clunky) acrobatics to infiltrate locales in a film noir game world. The core mechanic is really simple, yet clever. The basic premise of the game involves having to rewire devices to open locked doors and distract guards. But it intertwines this mechanic well alongside the use of sound detectors, lights, motion sensors and security cameras alongside colour coded circuits to make them do abnormal things. It's at its best once you're required to create a chain reaction across an entire building simply to get from point A to B, However, these moments come rarely and the game ends at around 3 hours of play with alot of fuel and potential for grand ideas left in the tank. Fortunately, there is a level editor and user made levels you can download that fullfills its puzzle driven potential. What I didnt expect was that the narrative was really good. While the overarching murder mystery doesn't reach memorable revelations, the game handles player focused choice and dialogue very well. There's alot of well balanced moral dilemmas to be had here, with the game often making you pick between having to lie or tell the truth or decide between well presented grey areas. It just made the experience come together very well. It's a strong 8/10 The Soundtrack is chill: |
