Can't wait to start Beyond Two Souls. It's my next game after Dark Souls 2 for sure although... if I don't beat these gargoyles soon, I might have to start it sooner :)

I finished The Swapper on Monday night. What a sensational piece of awesome that was. Very short and pretty basic but the story was good, well told and the game was great fun to play and controlled well.

The basic premise is you find a swapper gun. This gun let's you create up to four clones of yourself and then swap between them. Game breaks down into a series of puzzle rooms where you need to step on switches, navigate rooms using these abilities. Color is used well to create barriers on what you can and/or can't create/swap to clones and it's quite challenging at times but never so much I felt I needed to go look up a guide.

What really blew me away about the game was the atmosphere though. The music, sound effects and grainy textures really gave the game this spooky, alone feeling and, coupled with the story's progression, I felt it delivered the experience perfectly.

If you like puzzle games you should definitely give this game a shot! It's fucking exemplary!

Finished God of War: Ghost of Sparta last night. I think this is probably my favourite of the bunch. Good story, combat is enjoyable. Might go through and do a platinum run. Had a good month for finishing games so far. Onto God of War 2 and then that's the God of War series done for me.

Are you going to play God of War: Betrayal first though?

I tried to find a way to play that properly but I didn't do a very good job searching as I couldn't find a way to play it.

If you still want to give it a go, pstros seems to do the job. I downloaded pstors.jar from that site and the 360x640 version of the game from here:

http://java.mob.org/game/god_of_war_betrayal.html

And was able to run it with the command "java -jar pstros.jar G30917.jar -w360 -h640" (this requires the Java runtime to be installed, of course). It runs okay, but I haven't looked into what the keybindings for pstors are:

I'll give that a shot later on. Thanks James.

Finished Tomb Raider last night. Man, I really liked this game. Such a joy to play. I didn't really find the sudden change from novice killer to mass murderer a problem at all. Visually on the PS4 it looks amazing. Next to Infamous: Second Son it's the best looking game on the console right now. Plot was really enjoyable and had some great moments in it. Will definitely give it another play through eventually. 9.5/10

I gave GoW: Betrayal's first two levels a go, and I'm not sure if you want to bother. It really hasn't aged well.

If you do want to try it, pstors uses F1 and F2 for the left and right soft buttons, the arrow keys for directions, and the enter key for OK. This game has rudimentary touch screen functions, so you can click the menu options in the bottom left and right corners instead of using F1/F2, clicking the centre of the screen is OK, and the edges of the screen as directions. It's probably easiest to stick to the keyboard.

Just finished Brothers then. Perfect length game with good controls and beautiful imagery. Very touching story. The sequence through the aftermath of a battle is one of the most interesting levels I've seen in a game in a while. 8/10

Finished a few games over the last 2 weeks or so. Some of which were games I finally manged to return to after stopping to play them due to a trip around asia early in the year.

Endless Space - Strategy - Okay, just one more turn...

It's a turn based strategy game that prefers to polish and refine instead of trying to break the mold. It does so by delivering a slick presentation, cognitively communicates immediate strategic goals, consists of worthwhile--yet basic--additions such as a ship designer and Heroes and houses an interface that sets a new benchmark for the genre.
It can feel a little clinical at times, as in, it's somewhat devoid of character despite its attempts at humor within the tooltips. Regardless, Endless Space overall is a worthwhile strategy game that suits both experienced players and newcomers alike. 8/10

I should also make note of the amazing soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5zdlEqut6Q - which never became repetitive during the 35 hours I spent on the game.

Alan Wate - Shooter - Cant sprint for more than 3 seconds

Alan Wake is a shooting game. With odd pacing, uneven chapter lengths, unnecessary padding and a reliance on sidetracking. it's an apt description as that is how mediocre the game can feel at times. Thankfully, the action is solid, the shooting packs a punch and it sustains a creepy atmosphere throughout its fantastic setting. 7/10

FEZ - Puzzle / Platformer - Phil Fish is a God

Hnnngh. A 3D twist to the Metroidvania formula makes FEZ just so fascinating to explore and play. It's all thanks to its innovative core mechanic that does not outstay its welcome. While there is a fair bit of backtracking in FEZ, it never becomes too tedious or tiresome due to the calming and strange atmosphere of its gameworld. Despite its charming aesthetic, be wary. The game can be a little cryptic and challenging at times. 9/10

Tomb Raider - Action/Adventure - New record broken for how many times a character falls off a cliff/slope in a game.

A poor start muddled with a rushed character arc and sloppy QTEs is made up for the strengths of the action, a fully realized protagonist and a strong finish. Even though the platforming, puzzles, stealth, shooting are merely good and devoid of any challenge, they all come together with responsive controls and agile moment to give these elements cohesion and flow. 8/10

----

I also finished Transistor. Twice too. Gonna wait a few before summing up what I think about it. Short version: GOTY?

I finished off Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation (the Vita game). Game play wise, it was fairly impressive what they managed to fit onto the handheld. I liked the "personas" idea, where you can switch between three different disguises, each of which has their own notoriety meter and different skills and disadvantages.

Story wise, it felt a bit lacking. The game starts with the protagonist Aveline as a child losing her mother, and then jumps forward to her as an adult with living with her father and step father, already a member of the Assassins Brotherhood and helping out at her father's shipping company with some guy who seems to be the closest thing to a love interest. I never really got invested in the side characters, so the various twists in the story didn't hold much weight.

The game had a feature where you could link with the PS3 version of AC3 to unlock some features. Those were Connor's tomohawk, and the ability to play a particular mission from Connor's point of view (accessible from the Animus DNA menu, after finishing the mission from Aveline's POV).

The multiplayer is nothing like that from the main game, instead being somewhat closer to the parts of those game where you could send apprentice assassins on missions (and it is about as fun as that minigame). Games last for about a week with two sides trying to gain control over certain key cities on the globe. Unfortunately, they let you pick which side you want to play on, so the vast majority of people pick the Assassins. This leads to fairly unbalanced games. Even if that wasn't the problem, it doesn't involve much strategy and the UI is a bit clunky.

This is a really good video about Assassin's Creed III and IV's mechanics and their wider implications.

Pickles: that is an interesting video. I haven't played the other two games he talks about, but I definitely noticed the different ways people treat you when using different outfits in Liberation.

Jingles: So you're giving Betrayal a miss? :)

For now. I'll give it a shot eventually but not for a bit. Feel I've had my fill of God of War for now.

It's been a good eight years since I finished God of War 2 the first time, but it feels like I only just played it yesterday (duh, I did, but you get my point). Great game.
