And re-reading the announcement of the Steam Machine beta, it wasn't just a case of being unlucky: due to regulatory issues, they ended up picking the 300 beta participants from the US entries only.

I could have picked it up for you.

The thing I like about this forum is it won't be considered disruptive if someone bumps a post from a year ago (in a years time). Provided there's going to be people still here in a years time.

I noticed they'll release the OS at the same time as the beta units, but recommend only experienced “Linux hackers” install it at this stage. Will you give it a shot?

Sure does doesn't it? Multiple threads. Lots of users (so far) and a fairly regular stream of new posts.

So whats everyones thoughts on the Holden manufacturing closure in 2017? Obviously not great for the employees but I feel flogging a dead horse can only go on so long.

It'd be great if we could get the old crew back. Even this forum in it's simplicity is better than the GS tripe.

If you'd listened to podcast 004.... oh wait... we haven't published it yet! :)

I'm of mixed opinion. On one hand I don't think government assistance for a failing business is a good idea however, on the other, there will undoubtedly be ramifications as a result of the lack of funding which will probably cost the government more than they would have outlaid. From what I understand GM were asking for an equal percentage of government assistance to that offered in other countries and, whilst their work alone wouldn't provide much in the way of return, the other industries that support them would.

So it's a toughie.

We've got a fair few already and it's in early days so you never know. It'd be good if a few other regulars came across. I can't remember how to spell ausblackmatera's username so I couldn't tag him to notify him of the new forum which is frustrating.

Chickan - have you told Nick about the new forum?

As for Holden. I hate to say, but the market just isn't there for an automotive industry in Australia. Part of me says, let it die. But then the problem is is that what happens if it snowballs from there? The Australian film industry isn't great - Australian films almost never make money at the box office and we simply can't afford to make something like a District 9 film or even a higher grossing comedy. Heck, the most successful Australian film lately wasn't even made in Australia and wasn't even funded by Australia (the Saw series). So, if the government won't support the automotive industry and won't support cars being made in Australia (because basically put, the Liberal government would much rather sell off equity rather than invest in it), then who knows whether they'll support a film industry, a gaming industry or any other industry other than mining, logging or fishing. Anything that will show a return RIGHT NOW.

I'll definitely take a look at what they release. Whether I try to get it running will depend on what form they release it in.

I've got a number of colleagues who are interested in how it is built. The Linux Steam client primarily targeted Ubuntu (although it runs on other distros), so it will be interesting to see whether SteamOS itself is Ubuntu based. It will also be interesting to see what aspects they've changed relative to standard Linux installs.

@Chamboosy - Yeah I told Nick. Pretty sure he signed up an account but he got a new job some time back and hasn't been perusing forums much since then. It was only a month or so back he messaged me asking what had happened to the GS site! Lol

I get to meet him this weekend. Hope he's wearing his beer box headwear the entire time or I won't know who to look for

Are you nervous?

Also, I must say, in the space of about 48 hours this forum has already had a bunch of people transfer across and have a bunch of discussions already. A huge thanks to Chickan for getting this underway and getting our community back.

Hello everyone! Finally had the time to make an account. So has everyone essentially abandoned the gamespot forums?
I hope the community starts to thrive, seems to be a good start so thanks for making this happen Chickan :)

Cool. Welcome.
Yeh GS forums have been ruined and we didn't get our own regional forum yet so we've moved to here.
