Just did the save file transfer thingy for the new Steamworks version of Dark Souls. GFWL has been banished, praise the sun! It worked pretty well, I unlocked a bunch of achievements as soon as I launched the game and my save file is there and works perfectly. The only problem was that I had to turn off the framerate unlocker of dsfix to get the game to run (it would crash), but the resolution unlocker portion of it still works so I can play at 1080p with peasant frame-rates. Hopefully the mod is updated soon.

edit- Nevermind it's already been updated.

I started playing Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry (the single player DLC for Black Flag). I just got to the first plantation raid mission, where you can infiltrate a plantation and release a large number of slaves. The mission structure seems identical to Black Flag's warehouse raids, where you'd receive supplies you could use to buy upgrades.

Interestingly, it seems that certain upgrades in Freedom Cry require you to free a certain number of slaves before they will unlock. I wonder if this was an attempt at a political message: treating slaves and physical goods as equivalent from a game mechanics perspective?

Haven't played it but I'd say you're reading into it too much. Sounds like your standard 'do x amount of this task and win stuff'.

Well, I just boarded a slave ship, which netted me 90 slave points, which unlocked a ram for my ship and extra ammo capacity for my blunderbuss and firecrackers.

I've also noticed that crew keep on falling off my ship:

I don't remember them climbing up the rigging in the main part of the game, so I guess they didn't work out all the glitches.

James, I'm pretty sure I linked this a few months back for you, but perhaps give this a watch?

Sort of off-topic, but I can't stand the recent onslaught of anti-feminist crusaders -- who write in an overly-intellectual style and whose points are extremely pedantic -- who keep showing up in the comments of any Youtube video that examines games from a social or cultural perspective. I only had to scroll down about six posts before I saw someone dismiss that video as "empty feminist rhetoric". I imagine the crossover between this group and the Proud Atheist Nerd group is about 100%.

I thought the "Press B to liberate slaves" part was fucking hilarious and a really good microcosm of the point he was making.

It's also pretty sad that "Social Justice Warrior" is used as an insult by these people. Like, what, are you against social justice?

Pickles: that is an interesting video. The point about having the jailers always on the lookout for you is a good one too. When playing the game, I was much more conscious of avoiding the streets in the city where they patrolled: not because they were much of a threat (what enemies are in AC games?), but because they were an unwanted distraction from whatever else I was doing. In contrast, guards in previous AC games would only really come after you if you started knocking them over or murdering people in front of them.

And I too get a bit tired of the comments complaining about social commentary and feminism. It's as if those people think that computer games have reached their pinacle, and any attempt to change anything will make them worse (so therefore anyone who points out any issues is trying to destroy gaming).

They are probably the same people who moan about games being art that deserves the same prestige as movies and books. And now people actually are taking them seriously in that respect and suddenly they're "just games".
