Uh, just crashing and connection issues. I remember finding a game could often take forever.

Also it's worth noting that I probably first played it while it was still in beta, so I'm sure all that stuff was ironed out pretty quickly, I just never got around to trying it again.

Ah, OK. Well from the hour I played today the game ran rock solid for me with no issues and I had a great connection to Aussie servers (which there seemed to be plenty of).

My god I have had a terrible experience with PC gaming the last couple of days.

Bioshock Infinite is crashing at the start menu, I just cant seem to fix it. Ive re installed the steam copy and I have figured out that its a sli issue, cause the game runs on one card only.

Assassins Creed 3. Fuck Uplay. The Steam client wouldnt let me login through Uplay portal so I eventually figured out that I had to install uplay on its own and register the game. Eventually got it started but than couldnt get the 360 controller to detect, eventually figured it out but the buttons config are all fucking wrong. I dont recall using R buttons to adjust camera, surely its right analogue stick. Had zero issues with Revelations.

Tried Sleeping Dogs and that fired up ok until I put the graphics up to Extreme. My PC reset itself several times indicating that its a PSU issue, it is hot today but damn I have a 1000W PSU, more than enough to run sli with the game.

Hours lost, to get no results. My conclusion is that is perhaps its time to get that GTX980 and just run one card using a shit load less energy but I cant afford one now so PC gaming is on hold again. And no I am not dropping the graphics from the highest settings.
I feel for you! Sucks when you get everything hitting you at once. Worst part is when you get it all resolved by the end but have spent your hour or two game time just getting the things to work in the first place. Good for next time but a waste of time for today's session

Lost about 6 hours between the 3 games. For some reason Bioshock did manage to get past the start menu last night and I was able to get about 3 hours of gameplay into it, really enjoying it.

Civilization: Beyond Earth looks like Civilization V with different colour palettes.

I'll probably get it.

I've been playing Assassin's Creed 4. I'm enjoying it a lot more than AC3, and appreciate the simplified and streamlined UI. I'm really glad they got rid of the weapon wheel, which was quite unwieldy by the time AC3 came out. The town architecture also feels more interesting and less like a cut-n-paste job, which is nice too. I've really been enjoying the sailing parts of the game too. It is enjoyable enough that I don't feel the need to fast travel everywhere, and enjoy the trips between locations.

I tried to give the multiplayer a go during the weekend when you could play PS4 multiplayer without a PS+ subscription but never managed to join a game. I'm glad I found that out before purchasing the sub.

I'm keen to get AC4 when it's cheaper because the ship missions were my favourite thing in AC3.

AC3 was such a mess. It was way too easy for the guards to detect me and I'd often be spotted without the slightest idea of what I did wrong. It bombarded me with twice as many weapons and abilities than I ended up using. The story was actually okay for two hours but sucked once it changed to the main character (though I think all the AC stories are total drags except in AC2 and Brotherhood). It was also a pain to navigate the world. The ship missions were excellent though.

With AC4, is the whaling part integral to the story like the hunting is in Far Cry 3?

So far it has only been open world activities, but you'll need skins to craft certain upgrades. For example, I killed two humpback whales to make a holster so I could carry an extra pistol. I did feel a bit bad as my crew was hauling this large bloody carcass up out of the water though (they don't go down with a single harpoon, so it was covered in wounds). You can also orcas and various types of sharks.

The story so far has been pretty interesting and different from previous games. Rather than starting with the main character training as an assassin, this game has him stealing the outfit of a dead assassin, meeting the Templars first (pretending to be the coat's original owner).

It'll be a pass from me then. These open world games where they make you hunt animals to progress the story really grate on me. I can handle hunting tigers and shit, but hunting whales and stuff makes it a solid pass from me. Oh well, never liked the Assassin's Creed games as it is.

What about the countless open world games where they make you hunt humans to progress the story? Are you saying whales are better than people?

I gotta get my fix, yo.

Also Alien Isolation is really good and whoever reviewed it on Gamespot is a big dumb dumb.

I can respect your decision not to play. For what it is worth I think you can also buy these crafting materials at some of the shops too, but that probably doesn't matter to you.

I can also understand why they included the feature in the game, since it was part of the historical period. Leaving it out would also have been a political statement. And I think the way they included it does a good job of not sugar coating things. When you are out sailing, you will occasionally see humpbacks breaching and they look pretty spectacular. They're also never a threat.

The act of hunting them is also quite different to the land animals (which usually comes down to jumping out of a tree and stabbing them in the neck, or just shooting them with a pistol). You are in a small rowing dinghy and throw a harpoon into the animal and start being dragged by the whale. At this point, you're trying throw more harpoons into the animal. While you're doing this the whale is trying to break free of the rope, slap the boat with its tale, or try to breach and land on top of the boat. And when you finally kill it you see the gory carcass being dragged up onto the boat in full view. Compare this with killing and skinning a land animal, where the camera pans away from the carcass right after the job is finished: you can still look down at it, but the game doesn't force you to.

I didn't come away thinking that whaling is awesome. I was left wondering if it was really worth it just to get the leather to make this pistol holster. I'm not sure whether I'd go out of my way to repeat the activity after I've got the crafting materials I need either. So I think they did a good job of not trivialising the practice.

I still find it amusing you have to kill two entire whales to make one small holder.

Almost as amusing as in Far Cry 3 or Legend of Zelda when you decide to turf money because your wallet's not big enough to handle surplus funds
