So what you're saying is that your kids would be less confused in the in-game store if you just went out and bought all the figures for them up front?

Perhaps I dont fully grasp the concept of Skylanders or Disney Infinities game play but I must say the whole idea of what I know about them, doesnt interest me one bit.

Im not a statue collector, so I dont see any value in them either, I guess some peeps are into that kind of stuff which is cool, just not for me.

The biggest issue I have with it all is that it seems to come across has a huge cash cow for the publishers, too many additional purchases for my likings.

Wish a decent Marvel game came out again like the old school Alliance and X Men games with the overhead 4 player co op experience, needs a next gen release instead of the Infinity 2.0 that we are getting. It's just too childish for me and Im not saying that because I am a guy who needs to play rated M games only.

In other news, I completed GoW Ascension, it got a little better in the second half but its still only a 7/10 for me. Too much platforming, not enough combat and basically it seemed like a smaller and less necessary game compared to GoW3.

I'm basically done with PS3 now, I still have some digital HD remake games that I have to get through but im willing to give them a miss for the sake of moving to next gen. Other than Demon Souls which I just dont know I have the time or patience to invest into the series, its time for PS4.

It just annoys me that no backward compatibility with this gen, I would love nothing more to hook up the new consoles and if I desire to play last gen games, I could with the new systems. Not going to have both gens connected to my TV at the same time, its a space issue.

They are definitely a huge cash cow but, initially anyway, Skylanders was a fantastic concept. They took a franchise that was waning, kept the mechanics and humor that made it good and did a revamp. Instead of having one playable character they gave you three. Then they gave you the option of purchasing other characters. It didn't affect the storyline at all but was like DLC with a physical element.

Where they were good for kids was that they had multiple uses. The characters came with a stat card which would be used in a card game (rules are online but it's like most of those games where you call out skills and use stats to determine wins). They also came with a "web code". You could load up a Skylanders "farmville" type game onleine, enter any codes and those skylanders would be added to your village allowing you to gain strength and, eventually, fight with other players. Furthermore they released games for phone and tablets. In those games you could buy additional characters (in game currency or pay to get in game currency, usual shit). If you'd bought the statue you could just enter that web code again and immediately unlock it.

Thankfully web codes have now been replaced with QR codes so they're heaps easier to input :)

Anyway the kids loved all that AND they played with the statues like they did normal toys. Many skylanders ended up driving digging equipment in the sandpit.

I guess the biggest threat to the business model of these games would be someone reverse engineering the communication protocol between the figures and game, and then replicating it using the NFC hardware found in many phones these days.

I think what I liked so much about the first Disney Infinity was the difference beween the Pirates set/Incredibles set/Monsters Univeristy set. They all felt quite different and enjoyable. The Incredibles was possibly the best of the lot. The Toy Box mode was fun, but I don't really enjoy the whole 'make your own place to play in' thing - just like I really don't like level editors at all. I always meant to give the Toy Story set a shot but never did as I played Toy Story 3 and really enjoyed that. The Cars and Lone Ranger sets were supposed to be quite fun too.

I was afraid with Disney 2.0 that it would be much of the same of the same because it is just Marvel superheroes. The figures look quite nice, but as far as I understand it's all very much the same. The variety will surely come down the line with other sets getting involved, but for now as a starter pack it's not that inviting. Disney Infinity one's pack came with a whole bunch of exciting different things. Essentially three different six hours campaigns and a toy box mode. Quite good value in my opinion.

Do you know if the Disney 2.0 characters and disc will work with Disney Infinity 1.0?

They don't. It's shown on that list of limitations thing I mentioned on the box. Not overly surprising though as that would be a huge update for the old version and serve as a disincentive to buy the new one.

In other news, despite all my negativity, I sure have bought a lot of stuff :)

That's pretty cool. Unfortunately Empire: Total War is close to unplayable on my old ass laptop, so no chance I'd get Rome II running.

On a related note, I was obsessed with Crusader Kings II for two weeks before abruptly losing interest. Did you like it? I didn't even touch most of the DLC elements, though I imagine it'll be a game like Civilization V which I return to every few months for a new game or two.

I played a game of Civ 5 with some friends about a month ago. Fuck that game man.

And by 'fuck that game' I mean I probably should've played the tutorial.

I couldn't get into it, was way too complex and I had no desire to go through the plethora of tutorials.

Civ 5 only got like good after the 2nd expansion.

I still havent played Rome 2 after a rocky launch but I should pick it up sometime soon now that the Emperor's Edition is out. I felt Total War: Shogun 2 was the game that eventually usurped Civilization as the better high profile strategy franchise.

Moo if you're still looking for another puzzle game, Antichamber is on sale for like $3.00 on the Humble Store. The Bridge is apparently a good but flawed puzzle game on the Humble store too and it's like a dollar.

I looked at Antichamber when it was talked about recently and planned on getting it cheap, so thanks.

I've played Rome: Total War but I'd always get confounded once I reached a point where I couldn't grow due to a shortage of money. I just never figured out how to manage the economy and wasn't patient enough to figure it out.

I didn't like Civ 5 when it first came out because it felt so hollow compared to Civ 4. The expansions are basically half the game and improved it immensely. It's my favourite strategy game, even if the AI is as dumb as a rock.

Gotta take back some of my whinges about Disney Infinity. Hellishly addicted to it now. Whilst it still controls poorly, has short content, blah blah blah it also has a heap of variety and is loads of fun co-op. Found some tower defence levels last night. Nice mechanic similar to Dungeon Defenders where there's a staging section where you plant towers and then a fighting section where you run around fighting alongside the towers. You can sell your towers for cash or destroy them with Thor to get parts. Once you've collecte4d enough parts you can learn how to make new towers. I like how there are side objectives too. Scattered around the palce are little guys you can carry to a safe zone to get s core multiplier.

Anyway that, plus the level editor, plus the other bits and pieces, make for a pretty enjoyable game.
