I'd much prefer that devs turn to pixel or cartoony art styles rather than trying to do something 3D and more realistic when they don't have the time, skill or budget to make it look or feel any better than a clunky, early PS2 game. |

TLOU thoughts so far, having just left Ish's sewer home: - My impression of the game prior to playing was that it was very good cinematically and had serviceable gameplay, but now I'm scratching to think of a game that handles stealth this well (perhaps the Arkham series). The suburban stealth crawl in particular was brilliant; I love the fact that the tension is at fever pitch and there's no fucking sound except for footsteps and moaning zombies. I often fail at the stealth and have to resort to killing stuff but the stand-offs against human enemies when this happens are great fun. I'm glad Nuttz recommended playing in Hard because it makes item conservation important but not frustratingly so. -The story is okay so far, though pretty standard zombie fare. I think Joel's southern drawl makes him seem deeper than he is, but stylistically I like him a lot. I'm glad his relationship with Ellie isn't a carbon copy of Lee and Clem in The Walking Dead. Ellie could stand on her own as a character while Clem (in season one) only works as a character in relation to Lee. Also I find it funny how Lee teaches Clem stuff while when Ellie says she can't swim Joel just finds her a pallet to stand on. -MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD: One of my favourite parts was when Joel falls down the elevator shaft and has to escape the flooded basement. I was so low on ammo that I couldn't fight the zombies, so I planned a long route that would goad them away from the keycard door while I looped back around and hurried through it. The first time I did this it went off without a hitch until I reached the door and realized I'd forgotten to pick up the fucking keycard, so I was mauled to death. Second time was cool. The story really hits it's stride in the second half/third of the game, up until this it follows a pretty standard road-story archetype in that we stop at a few places along the way with not a whole lot of character growth. I do like the way all of these road stops tie in thematically though. I can definitely see the film adaptation cutting out a lot of the earlier parts of the story in favour of the later. |

I noticed that it starts to get more interesting once the premise is established and Joel and Ellie are on their own. I like the character beats in-between the action, and especially liked the small talk the two have with those black guys while exploring the post-sewer houses. |

I was really impressed with the dialogue. How their relationship evolves over the game )other than the obvious) really makes the decisions later seem realistic |

Actually the recent mention of Fez here along with mentions of it on a podcast made me realise that I should orobably play Fez, so I'm going to play Fez soon. Perhaps I'll try to finish The Swapper first. |

I'm on a gaming high point at the moment! ![]() Just finished replaying the Swapper (on Vita/PS4) and have restarted Transistor (on PS4). On my lunch hour I'm playing Child of Light mixed with Fex on the Vita when I'm out and about, or on the toilet, or pretending to have a coffee break, or etc. ![]() Really enjoying myself at the moment. |

Quick achievement question; does anyone else find that Steam's achievement system is a bit hit and miss when it comes to actually awarding an achievement? I have missing ones in games like the Walking Dead (which are earned by just completing chapters) and sometimes (mainly when playing offline) the things don't register at all. I rarely look at the achievements but checked some out recently and noticed there were achievements for things I'd done that hadn't registered |

I don't even remember that at all to be honest so I don't think it plays into it that much. |

I figured they either all died and I missed some notes or they were just left to be potential DLC Edit : then again... if they died they wouldn't be writing notes would they? Lol Edited by Derpstrom, Aug 19 2014, 03:13 PM.

I know it's just an optional sideplot but it was cool seeing Ish's original letter (where he returns from sea after a few months) expand into a wider story that corroborates with the environment. |

There's one or two letters pretty soon after the sewer section. |

My initial reaction: that was an abrupt ending, I didn't like it, but I haven't mulled over it yet. I think my biggest disappointment was that someone said the final shot was incredibly important or shocking or something, but it's not (unless they were referring to Left Behind which I haven't played yet). The last few hours I have a bunch to say about (the whole deer trade sojourn was taking the characters into a very interesting place until the apocalypse trope I was glad hadn't showed up in the game yet showed up and shoved the character stuff to the side), but I wanna play Left Behind before I share my opinion.

Most people I spoke with who hated the end more hated what Joel did whereas I thought it was perfectly in character and a nice change from what I've come to expect from big games |
