Oh I just took a break (and still kinda am) because it's eating into time when I should be writing stuff. But I couldn't resist playing Crusader Kings II today so it's all for nothing at the moment.

Five minutes after booting the game up where I left off my king died young at 45. Now I'm Teresa, Queen of Leon and wife of the heir to the Holy Roman Empire.

I'ma kill him.

Actually shit I just realized that if we pop out a son he'll (I'll) eventually rule Leon and the HRE, lifting me from my current position as ruler of a hick Spanish state to possibly the biggest power player in Europe.

My first act of business: executing my half-uncle for trying to murder me.

That plan didn't work. My son inherits from the father's side but not the mother's, so he will rule the HRE but can't rule Leon. To add insult to injury I gave my husband a title for holdings in Salamanca and upon the death of his father, the emperor of the HRE, he became emperor and took my title and son with him, leaving me worse off than before (Salamanca is roughly 1/5th of my lands)! I requested a divorce which the Pope obliged and went to war for Salamanca, but my husband's cronies just walked over and kicked the shit out of me and I had to surrender.

Now no dukes or kings will marry me in a matrilineal marriage (where children are a part of the mother's dynasty) and I won't STOOP to marrying some lowborn courtier or count. My brother, who is decent enough, is my heir now. Fuck my ex-husband!

Crusader Kings II is possibly my favourite strategy game. You rule one of dozens upon dozens of dynasties during the Crusades era and not only have to deal with other kingdoms but the bickering and scheming of your vassals, relatives, courtiers, peasants and visitors.

I imprisoned and banished my sister from the realm because she assassinated my daughter to increase her own claim to the throne. Later I uncovered a plot hatched by my half-brother to murder my other daughter, which would've made him my successor. I attempted to imprison him but he escaped and declared war. Unfortunately my troops had just been vanquished elsewhere and I was defenseless against his pitiable band of soldiers. Luckily, before my half-brother captured my capital, I remembered I had some money in the treasury and was able to purchase the services of a mercenary group and crush him. I also had to borrow money from the Jews, but I've proved in the past that I'm good for it. My half-brother was imprisoned, had his titles revoked, and now serves as my marshal because I just can't pass up on his military abilities. I decided not to execute him because nobody likes a kinslayer. He'll probably try to kill my daughter again, or my newborn son. I'm not sure. I'm not 100% on what my laws of succession are at the moment. My daughter also just married the heir to the Holy Roman Empire, so hopefully I can press a claim on that baby one day.

I also had a father accuse my chaplain of raping his daughter and had to choose whether to let it slide, fine him or imprison him. I imprisoned him and banished him from the realm. Not sure where he is now, possibly dead.

It's so fun. Currently dirt cheap on Steam!
Apparently there's a GoT (or aSoIaF is probably more accurate as it's based on the books) mod out for it that's very good. You should give it a a go.

This game your playing seems to appeal to me. Is it like Civ games?? Researching, building armies etc or do you just control your house. I can't be doing with researching tech and trying to build legions of soldiers.

It's more complex than Civilization but in some ways it's more simplistic. The economy and technological advancement are simplified and feel more like they do in Age of Empires, and armies are fairly easy to figure out too and don't take up nearly as much of your time to maintain. Diplomacy and domestic rule are way more complex and will take up most of your time. It took me roughly two hours to even get a basic idea of what to do (there are some fairly helpful hints when you start out) but once you've given it that time it really draws you in. It's a steep learning curve but it's worth it.

I've been playing for a long time and have never conquered anyone, had war declared on me once to no result, took part in the Crusades and won nothing, and except for increased profits from tax I don't feel I've advanced in anything, but the character side of things is so involved and Game of Thrones-like that I couldn't care less. Civilization is about obtaining victory while CKII feels like an interactive storyline you take part in.

Oh and if anyone was curious, my son who was heir to the Holy Roman Empire died a maimed cripple at 16 :(

In case anyone wants the deets on the Kingdom of Leon:

After my doomed attempt to weasel my way into ruling the Holy Roman Empire, Leon joined Aragon and Navarre as a backwater on the Iberian Peninsula as Castille stretched from one end to the other, consuming Portugal and Galicia entirely. The only positive was that they never managed to take any of my land, but it was looking like it was only a matter of time before they did. However, earlier the Pope had declared a Crusade on a large Muslim kingdom that dominates the south of the Peninsula. The rules of a Crusade is that the crusading country with the greatest war effort wins all captured lands once the Crusade ends. This happened to be Pisa, and soon after they received this land they started to fabricate claims for nearby Castilian lands. Castille could probably have managed this threat alone, but suddenly the three Spanish kingdoms they'd bludgeoned into corners of the Peninsula realized that Castille now had potential enemies in every direction. To make matters worse, Castille was (I think) taxing its people too heavily and half of its people rose up in revolt, meaning it simultaneously had to fight an internal war and numerous external ones.

At this point Castille is pretty screwed. Aragon and Navarre have doubled in size while I've snagged two provinces of my own. Due to family ties I even brought the wrath of the Holy Roman Empire down on them at one point, and meanwhile Pisa is steadily grabbing new land from them every few years. It's looking like Castille might vanish from existence, or at least relevance, very soon, but then the same could have been said of myself, Navarre and Aragon not too long ago. One cool aspect is that you're never really down and out in this game, and it always throws curve balls at you.

Like typhoid fever. It just swept across Western Europe (it's the first time it's ever come up in the game) and has hit Leon and Castille pretty damn hard. I have typhoid fever. My cousin has it. My poor wife just died from it! I hope it doesn't reach my newborn son or I'll have no direct heir!

I decided to buy it based on your recommendation Dave (I've been considering it for a while anyway). Mother of God there are a lot of tutorials.

You should pick up some of the DLC while it's cheap. Outside of the stuff in the Collector's Edition apparently The Old Gods, Sons of Abraham and Rajas of India are good ones to have.
