Playing through episode one of Jacob Jones. Not bad. The jokes are quite amusing and the puzzles are hardly taxing at all. It feels like it's directed at kids but a lot of the references are aimed at adults. Almost finished it. Easy to complete in two hours I think.

I've been playing Bioshock Infinite. It seemed to get some good reviews, so I thought it might be worth having a go at.

I've just finished off the factory area, so I guess I'm about half way through. It feels a bit more shooty than the original Bioshock. I also preferred the hacking mechanic in that game to the possession vigour in Infinite, which seems to be some what less useful. It is nice playing someone with a bit more personality though, and I like the interactions with Elizabeth.

Good of War Chains of Olympus is an infinitely better game than Ascension was. So much more enjoyable and easier to understand the plot. For a PSP game as well it's very large. Looking forward to heading into God of War after this.

Age of Wonders 3 is a pretty cool turn based strategy game.

The pacing is pretty nice as there's barely a dormant turn where nothing interesting happens. Between mobile exploration, defeating neutrals/mobs for unit experience, completing quests, entering dungeons, getting loot, casting world spells; there's always something worthwhile to accomplish. I like how units can be pumped out at a reasonable rate that allows you to respond to defense of a position quickly. I like the wealth of independent cities that you can capture or diplomatically intergrate into your empire. I like how weather and spells come into play: Want to subtley slow the progress of a cold loving dwarven city? cast a spell to change the weather of the surroundings without diplomatic punishment. I like the subterranean areas that defy traditional zone control, providing opportunities for remote areas and even encourages you to actually build forts at entrances to scout what is coming through. I like the Hero system, with the character creation options and the amount of skills and passives you can acquire. I like the tactical combat encounters as units are fun to use and there is a nice XCOM-like cost system in play. And I like how the game uses a hex grid properly with units that dont move in these petty 1 space limits, causing a problem where a strong military becomes an issue of figuring out where the hell you're supposed to place a unit.

Age of Wonders 3 does have its fair share of flaws, though. The tech tree is a little lackluster, linear and doesnt provide an interface for planning out research schedules. Diplomacy is basic (but gets the job done). There's a few unit imbalances. Empire building is on the simple side in Age of Wonders 3 (where Age of Wonders 3 is more combat focused). And well, Age of Wonders 3 doesnt really address the age old problem of not being able to VIABLY expand upwards, which always leads players to expand outwards, spam cities and eventually get overwhelmed with micromanagement.

Are you trying to play the games in chronological order or something? Won't that end up spoiling various surprises?

Yeah, playing through the series chronologically. I haven't played the psp games before and want to replay the original two. I'm surprised how much of a steel backwards ascension is.

Oh man, you should definitely switch to release order instead of chronological order :)

As for me I've been replaying Guacamelee. Much easier than I remember and I'm playing it on hard this time too :) Have they changed the controls since it was first released? For example; I remember the Rooster Uppercut as being a half circle forward then O however it now seems to just be hold up and press O.

Second Question - I never got all the orbs the first time around. This time I've got 6 but my map only shows 5/6. I counted the one after the end boss at around #3... does it not register unless you already have 5? I.e. should I refinish the game or is my game screwy?

One thing I found amusing was that the Tree Top orb took me about 10 minutes to get. Start to finish, no practice. I remember being stuck for days on that bastard back when I first played. Either I'm better than I was then or they made it easier or I just remembered what to do (surprising how many areas I remembered) :)

WHAT A GREAT FUCKING GAME!!!!

Edit : It probably is easier this time. First time I played I never used costumes (did they have them back then) whereas, this time, I am. Yet to unlock the ones from the challenge arena. Figured I'd finish the core game with all orbs before I took on any more challenges. Really looking forward to those.

I think after getting the orbs you had to face the boss again to get the final orb.

Cheers. I'll do that at lunchtime. He wasn't tough at least so that's a bonus :) Just checked my trophy list and that means I only need that pesky "use all moves without touching the ground" one. Annoying but I know I'm gonna do it as I'm one off a plat then :)

Edit : Thanks man. Got it. Also got the "use all moves without touching the ground" thing en route to another trophy for finishing that third skeleton level using the skeleton guy (ne healing). Man that was TOUGH! Anyway it turns out the not touching the ground was easy. I was trying to include them all in a combo which made it hard. All I had to do was ensure each move could be finished with a wall grab and I was fine. Rooster Uppercut > Olmec Headbut > Derp Derp > Grab a wall. Lower to the bottom then dash left or right to bump into someone. Wait until someone is near then dash up then just jump off and Frog Stomp down to hit them (that one always ends on the ground). WIN!

Why switch to release order over chronological order? I've only got three more games to go now. Well, two and a half. Halfway through God of war.

Well it's probably too late now but I would have recommended it that way to facilitate better storytelling. E.g. much of the impact of #1 is spoilt as you now already know much of the "wow" stuff that is revealed in the story. Prequels were designed with assumed knowledge of the succeeding ones, etc. etc.

True. I was going to play Ascension anyhow so figured I would go through it chronologically. I knew the basic plot of the games before playing anyhow. I'm still surprised at how poor Ascension works at telling its story. It makes it overly confusing for no particular reason.

The same argument can be said about the Star Wars films, but people will watch them with the prequels first thus ruining surprises later on.
