I have an a hard copy I bought years ago for 6 bucks that's been left gathering dust. I just never feel like it every time I'm reminded of its existence.

Gotta love the jank. I had two consecutive bosses get stuck in one spot and just stood next to them shooting round after round until they died. Fortunately, the bosses are the bad kind of difficult so I was very happy with this.

I loved Alpha. The dialogue system was the best I can remember. Choices actually mattered, since they often gave rise to some major divergences in both the story and gameplay. Shame the RPG system is so broken. I remember that upgrading your stealth and pistols essentially breaks the game by making it trivially easy, while pumping points into assault weapons breaks it by making it impossibly hard.

Maybe I should replay it since I don't really remember any of the plot. Seriously considering it.

I've pumped nearly all my XP into stealth and pistols and am abusing chain shots and 12-second invisibility as much as possible. It's easier but in any game that gives the choice between stealth and action I'll always pick stealth.

Okay I beat it. I guess I got a good ending since I beat the baddies and left on a boat with the girl.

Ultimately the big divergences and character roster spread the story and characterization a little thin. It ends up being a standard action thriller. I’m glad I played it, a bit disappointed it didn’t live up to the cult status.

Eh, I think the cult status is justified. It's a heavily flawed and visually ugly game that's nevertheless very enjoyable to play and features an innovative choice and consequence system that still hasn't been done better in any game I've played. It was ignored and pilloried upon its release, but has subsequently developed a small group of fans and defenders willing to look beyond the jank. So I'm not sure how it doesn't live up to the cult status. To me, it's a quintessential 'cult' game.

But of course it's only an action thriller. I don't think anyone ever claimed it's a deep story or an MGS-style mind fuck. I was initially interested because it was marketed as a modern day spy RPG where you develop your own James Bond, which it basically is.

I'm still interested in that type of game. It's a shame the RPG genre remains firmly stuck in the dungeons and dragons bullshit. I'm so sick of that aesthetic.

I get why it's got cult status. It's just a disappointment against the likes of other cult games I played years after release like Deadly Premonition. It just didn't have an aspect that made me a convert, though I was impressed with the choice system. Obsidian have made games since with deep choice systems, though all of them are dungeons and dragons isometric RPGs that lack the cinematic chops Alpha Protocol has.

You might get what you're looking for in Cyberpunk 2077, an RPG made by the Witcher 3 folks.

If 90's isometric with turn based combat isn't a turn off for you, play the original Fallout, I still maintain it's the best one despite Fallout 2 being a large expansion upon what the first game did. In fact, it being more short and sweet is part of the reason I liked it so much. I think RPGs having shitloads of side content, while not necessarily a bad thing, unfailingly dilutes the urgency and importance of the main plot. Nothing undermines your main quest to hunt down your long lost daughter like spending 30 hours performing monster contracts, crafting masterwork gear and becoming a renowned fistfighter of the realm. Fallout didn't fall into that trap, which I think really works in its favour. There is of course room to go off the beaten path, but with most RPGs there's way more side content than there is main story, which isn't the case here. It's a great RPG if you only want to spend 15-20ish hours or so, 60+ hour games can become pretty tiresome after a point. Less is more sometimes.

If anyone else got Layers of Fear for free a while ago and wants a scoop, here’s mine: it sucks.

Totally agreed, I finished it the other week and couldn't be bothered posting about it at the time. The story just goes fucking nowhere and has such a weak payoff (regardless of what ending you get, and I got the 'good' one). As I said before, way too many jump-scares that it quickly becomes routine and predictable. The thing is, being startled by loud noises and sudden movements is the only form of 'horror' in the game outside of some mild and generic imagery (wow a creepy doll, never seen that before) because you're not actually in any danger. You can't die, the worst that can happen is that you pass out and wake up, so once you realise that any sense of vulnerability is lost and I just ended up running head on in to anything that was supposed to be scary.

Another thing that the game really suffers from is that it's an empty draw searching simulator, and because you're regularly being rewarded with jack shit for your searching efforts you lose patience and stop searching as thoroughly, which means you WILL miss out on pages that fill the story in more thoroughly.

How on earth this game has a 91% approval rating on steam is beyond me. I give it 3 snapped paintbrushes out of 10.

I tried to get into it. I played at midnight, lights off, on the big screen TV. But it just hurtles jump scares at you, and cliche imagery like dolls and deformed, spindly-moving people, that it quickly gets boring. It does some visually impressive things with the layout of the house and it’s not as annoying as Amnesia or pretentious as Ethan Carter. I also raced through sections and missed a lot of stuff (I got the bad ending). I give it a I should’ve played Hollow Knight instead out of fart.

I played Observer by the same developer. It was a slight disappointment from a gameplay perspective, but I really liked the seedy retro-futuristic aesthetic. I was actually looking forward to trying Layers of Fear, but you monsters just had to go and kill my buzz.

Are there any good psn deals at the moment? PS4 was beeping too much so I unplugged it and now can't be bothered plugging it back in without a good reason.

It’s mostly PS Plus exclusive discounts at the moment. Prey is probably cheap as chips at retail stores but hey I’ve advocated as best I can for it and none of you bozos will buy it.

Hollow Knight is an awesome Super Metroid-like. Could be the best Aussie game I’ve played.
