Yeah more and more I'm thinking I'll just be skipping Nioh 1, the samey environments look they would really put a hamper on my enjoyment. Shadows Die Twice looks pretty neat from what they showed.
Nioh doesn’t have repeat environments if you ignore side missions, which I did too much and lost interest. It does have an issue regardless with its small roster of enemy types. It’s Soulslike but not as good as Souls. However it does a good job with its bosses.

As far as cinematic trailers go, I think it really depends on the game. If it is mostly story driven, then a cinematic trailer that gives you a feel for the characters and world might do a lot more than a random 3 minute slice of game play. If instead it relies on a repetitive gameplay loop, then I'd want to know what I'm doing: for such a game, I'd definitely want to see actual gameplay.

I think in a lot of cases, you'd need to spend more time showing gameplay than there is time for in one of these press conferences, so a cinematic sizzle real at the conf, and a pointer to a longer video to watch afterwards isn't a bad compromise.

Yeah that’s true. The Last of Us 2 for instance.

Yeah agreed, a pointer to something meatier would be a good compromise.

I took another break from DA:I because its a really bloody long game, more-so than I expected. That said, I do remember Origins taking quite a while to get through, I think I spent a good 60 hours on it.

I played Sleeping Dogs, I liked it. Currently playing Layers of Fear which is eh. Too many jumpscares. Good environmental storytelling though.

Also with 400 plus hours in PUBG I decided to give fortnite a proper try. It doesn't seem like a bad game. It's much better looking to me (Cartoony graphics done well > realistic graphics done poorly) and runs much better. I just can't get my head around the building mechanics. In every shooter I've ever played I'm used to working with the existing cover, but in fortnite people can just shit out walls to hide behind if you attack them, which I honestly just find annoying. If I destroy the wall they can just immediately replace it as long as they're not short on materials. This in some ways is a good thing in that you don't get punished by circle RNG as badly, but it also removes reward for good positioning, so the whole game just feels less tactical and more spastic to me.

I don't think its bad, but its not for me.

I didn't mind Fortnite but there's basically two fights at the start and end and not much going on in-between. The majority of time is spent running through the forests and canyons.

That issue is even more pronounced in PUBG because the maps are bigger. They're bringing out a new half-sized one though that will be similar to fortnite's. That is another thing that I do like better about PUBG, having actual map variety.

I finished Oxenfree earlier in the week, having played through a few times. As a relatively short game, I didn't mind as much that certain content would only appear on a second playthrough. It also fit the storyline well too. The dialog system felt quite natural, with you cutting people off if you answer early, and with this sometimes changing how a conversation could play out. There were a few times when I wanted to let someone finish what they were saying and ended up running out of time to respond though.

Since then, I've been playing Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered (which I assume is basically the same as Rogue was on PC at release). Even though it is essentially just Black Flag reskinned, I'm having a lot of fun. It does make me appreciate the climbing/movement in the newer games (the newer games feel less wooden, and I don't remember getting stuck on building geometry as much).

I know one of the main differences in this game is that you play as a Templar with assassins trying to kill you, but I haven't gotten up to the heel turn yet. I guess that's where I'll see the game's unique mechanics.

I need to give Oxenfree another chance. I played it one night while getting drunk, got stuck on a puzzle in a schoolroom, and never got back to it. I wasn't enjoying the supernatural turn.

Kentucky Route Zero's another game I've got to get back to. I was actually enjoying that, it just slipped to the wayside. Good dialogue and aesthetic.

I finished the main story of Assassin's Creed Rogue over the weekend. Story-wise, I think it has Unity beat with a story that tied in with the other games better and it actually expanded on the present-day storyline. It does feel like it could have been a bit longer though: when I finished the main storyline the north-east half of the New York map remained unexplored, and the same went for about half the locations in the Atlantic and river valley maps.

It was interesting seeing the gameplay changes once the protagonist switches sides to the Templars, mostly being twists on mechanics from previous games:

* While walking down a road, you might have an assassin jump out of a haystack or off a building and try to stab you. These enemies aren't automatically highlighted on the mini-map or eagle vision, instead using the whispers and proximity ring from previous games' multiplayer modes.

* Rather than going to a pigeon coop to accept an assassination contract, you try to catch pigeons on the rooftops to steal the message and then try to prevent the assassination.

* When battling other ships in the sailing part of the game, the other ships can try to board you rather than the reverse.

I was half wondering if they'd have Shay switch back to the Assassins at the end of the game but they played it straight. While it is a little weird that Shay decides to side with the ideological opposite after falling out with the Assassins, the reasons for his disagreement bore out by the end of the game. It could probably have done with a few more missions or cut-scenes to flesh out his turn though (e.g. he doesn't say anything when you find yourself attacking a base flying a flag with the Assassins' crest on it.

Eurogamer is my go-to review site but they have some article right now written by someone who made a Jerusalem-themed version of WoW where Jews are Human, Arabs are Undead and Night Elves are Queers and I just wonder what the fuck EG were thinking publishing it.

I spent some of the weekend clearing out some of the side content in AC: Rogue. I finally got the ship upgraded enough to take on the legendary battles.

The first three seemed fairly well balanced, but the last I felt I won more by chance. The rain meant you couldn't easily see the enemy ship, and it was constantly firing mortars and volleys of flaming cannon balls that would set my ship on fire. And when it was almost dead, two more man-o-war reinforcements would show up. On my winning attempt, I got in close and was rammed. My ship spun around so its aft was stuck against the side of the enemy, so I just kept dumping burning oil out the back and managed to take it out before the reinforcements got close. Those two ships went down much easier.

It is weird looking at some of the reviews released when this game came out: it seems a number of the reviewers were put off by how similar the game was to Black Flag. But playing it years later, that seems like more of a plus to me.

I'm also playing pirates. I've been slowly getting through Pillars of Eternity 2 on the hardest mode because I really like figuring out the subtleties of the combat system when things get tough.

The game might appeal to people who didn't like the cliche fantasy trappings of the original. The setting is pirates with a focus on colonialism, and it seems pretty well studied in that regard.

I initially groaned at how typical of last gen console shooters Alpha Protocol appeared, but liked it when the optional training tutorials lead to lengthy conversations with different characters. The gameplay is subpar Deus Ex but serviceable. Seems like another good Obsidian game I missed out on.

The Saudi Arabia missions were testing my patience with their blandness, but then suddenly things change from straight-laced spy story to a juicy conspiracy thriller with MGS-style characters. It has way more depth than I expected - choices seem to diverge down a lot of different pathways. The gameplay steps up too, janky as it is. This game is like 2 USD on Steam right now - buy it!
