I tried it out, though on mute because I was listening to podcasts. It looks and plays smoothly but is pretty hard for a kids’ game on normal. When I’m podcasting I like a game I can relax with. I’ll have to try it properly some time. I have no clue how you’re supposed to get those special coins. I spotted the one across the lava in Clank’s intro level and had no idea what to do. |

I think I know the gold bolt you're talking about: you can't get it until later in the game when you visit that area again as Ratchet. While there are some gold bolts you can just collect through exploration, many of them require you to revisit worlds after acquiring new gadgets. Towards the end of the game, you can get a map gadget that makes all the hidden areas and collectables visible on the map. |

I started playing Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I'm still getting a hang of the combat: it felt a bit old school not having a tutorial with button prompts. It just throws you into the first encounter and expects you to read the controls in the pause screen and work out how to parry and evade. It feels quite different to previous Ninja Theory games too, with the camera pulled in a lot closer. It's good for immersion, but does make it easier for an off screen enemy to get a hit in. I've played through to the first boss (I picked the "illusions" one first), and really liked the "illusion gate" mechanic in the puzzles. I'm not sure whether that will continue or if it is limited to that area. I was having a bit of trouble with the boss at the end until I realised that the voices in my head were telling me to press one of the buttons only used outside of combat so far to continue. The voices in Senua's head are also an interesting addition. I imagine they'd be even more creepy if I was playing with headphones as the game suggested. |

I set my phone up to act as the motion control device now, it works really seamlessly and has made these motion puzzles an absolute BREEZE. You don't know true suffering until you've tried to do them with a mouse. |

God of War is a trip. It’s a bit sad that the series’ theatrical bombast is gone, because it was breathtaking, unique, and as well directed as the new game is, its cinematic and gaming influences are obvious. It does retain the series’ sense of epic scale that’s only rivalled by Shadow of the Colossus. Fortunately the juvenile masochism is gone and it’s The Last of Us meets Norse mythology. Coming after Horizon ZD and preceding TLoU2, Sony is killing it with the big budget blockbusters right now. |

I finally finished GTA V. It became a bit of a slog towards the end, because I compulsively did all the side missions as they came up and insisted on getting gold in all the sports and races so I got a bit burned out on it before I completed the story. It was fun overall though. The story itself was pretty weak, as were the characters (Franklin and Michael were bland and poorly developed, and Trevor was just genuinely too unpleasant to enjoy), but the missions were mostly fun and the world was fantastic. I was thinking about playing San Andreas straight away, but no. It's too soon. Need a good break from GTA now. |

I finished Far Cry 4 the other day. I've never really thought of myself as a particularly massive fan of this series, but looking back I have to admit that I've actually quite enjoyed playing 3 of the main entries (2,3,4) and I had a fun old time with Blood Dragon as well. I don't think of these games as being anything especially amazing or ground breaking but they are quite solid open world first person shooters that I've undeniably had fun playing. They do fall into the trappings of most open world games (a fair bit of repetitive, uninspired side content) but I definitely enjoy chasing the upgrades and weapons. I don't play many Ubisoft games at all, so I guess these are my ubisoft open world games of choice... I never played the first one and I doubt it would be worth going back to, to my understanding Crysis was Far Cry turned up to 11. I will definitely get Far Cry 5 one day when I feel like playing another one, not sure if I'll bother with Primal or not. I started playing Dragon Age Inquisition the other day. I tried playing it a couple of years ago and dropped it at the time, my impressions a lot more positive this time around. The environments are great. You can tell they were really trying to make up for 2. Edited by Doomguy, May 12 2018, 01:47 PM.

Trevor’s unpleasantness was why I liked him. When he strolls uninvited into Michael’s house it’s almost chilling. Michael’s a good miserable character representing the hollowness of the American dream. Franklin’s underdeveloped, he just stops mattering around the midpoint. |

@Curt, I finished DA:I about a month ago. It's better than its reputation - people deeply hate it and I don't know why. It does have sidequest filler and the combat could be better, but the story is good if you've played 1 & 2 and exploring the lands is enjoyable in itself. I hope you're playing with DLC because the game's actual ending is in Trespasser (and both it and The Descent are among the game's best content). Far Cry has enjoyable gameplay loops from what I've played (4 and some of 3) and 4 was pretty damn funny sometimes. Dying Light borrowed its concepts (including utterly forgettable plots!) and made a way better game. Edited by Moo, May 12 2018, 03:40 PM.

Yeah I heard about the ending being in the DLC, trust fucking Bioware to pull that kind of crap. I don't have it but if I do get up to that I'll buy it then. The other problem with this game is that the movement is very stiff, which is probably the major reason I decided to play a mage so I can just be a turret. And yes I still want to try Dying Light, one day. It does look neato. |

I played mage in 1 & 2 but went with rogue in 3 for a change of pace. I can’t be sure but it seems kinetically to be the most enjoyable, you get some cool fast moves. |

I finished Hellblade today. As an experience, it is probably Ninja Theory's best work. They obviously put a lot of effort into portraying psychosis, and I think it came out well (although I'm not really in a position to judge how accurate it was). The "making of" documentary included with the game was pretty interesting w.r.t. that though. |

I was gonna play it eventually anyway but hearing it’s based in Norse mythology perked my interest after God of War. I finished GoW. Very solid Soulslike brawler. The story is *fine*: I wasn’t as taken as some and think the brilliant voice acting masks some shoddy dialogue, but there are some amazing scenes and surprises littered throughout. Journos overrated it, but I’d give it an 8/10. |

I didn't notice it during the game, but the behind the scenes documentary says that Senua was supposed to be a member of the Pict people from Scotland (a Celtic tribe). So while the story draws a lot from Norse mythology, the protagonist essentially only has second hand knowledge of those beliefs. I'd recommend giving it a shot: it is fairly short, without much in the way of filler. I'd strongly recommend going to the options and turning on the run toggle: the game's default walking pace is incredibly slow, and this option means you can use the shoulder button to toggle between walk/run rather than having to hold it to run. I don't think there was ever any point in the game where I felt I was moving too fast by running. And if you don't have surround sound speakers, consider using headphones for the voices in Senua's head. |

I thought Michael was just a poor man's Tony Soprano who ultimately overcomes his midlife crisis and makes good with his family through some good old-fashioned mass murder and bank robbing. So I didn't get the hollowness of the American dream from him. I just found him poorly written. I agree that Franklin was the most underdeveloped, which is a shame, since I used him by far the most and was hoping he'd become the true protagonist. |
