They are now a company who only cares about short term success. When Iwata took over the company, he killed off the GC to focus on the casual market with the Wii. While it was a great success early on, they got lazy with supporting the console later in it's life (I got the 360, 18 months after I got the Wii because of didn't see enough upcoming support). They had already released Mario Galaxy, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Paper Mario, Zelda and Mario Kart by this stage (only Animal Crossing was going to be the biggest release for that holiday season.

History will show that my timing was perfect with getting the 360 as many big name 1st and 3rd party games coming soon after, as well as the hardware problems being largely fixed. The difference in the game line-ups were incredible, the Wii couldn't ever come close. Add to that XBL and online gaming, with the later addition of party chat and the NXE interface change (plus the large XBLA game line-up).

Once Wii sales dropped dramatically, I made the unpopular call on Gamespot that the next Nintendo console will be a massive failure and will not even sell 30m worldwide (it didn't even sell half of that, the Switch already has beat it). As we saw it did happen and went ever worse than my expectations. I also did make a call that Nintendo would abandon the Wii U for a new console mid gen after it failed, which was the Switch.

I didn't expect them to make another gimmick console like the Switch, they needed a console with hardware equal to the launch XB1. This is the same cycle they did with the Wii which will put their next console in trouble like with the Wii U because the Switch will only be a half gen console. Times are different, providing a console with higher end technology is important as we have seen with smart phones for long term success.

Problem is they are more interested in over charging people with the under powered hardware and making a bigger margin instead of trying to generate more consoles to push more software to make money. Their whole online infrastructure is even further behind than last gen and they need to get a company such as Google to fix it (even get a custom version of Android if they have too).

We have seen their obsession with control hurt them badly. The creation of the Playstation brand and Sony's dominance, the exodus of 3rd party developers making top quality games for their console. The big sales of the NES and SNES mini gives them a chance to revive many of their old IPs which they have left idle to keep releasing the same small group of games. Reality is I don't think they will ever change and they are just making up the numbers in the industry.

LISA is Earthbound set in a world full of post-apocalyptic psycho rapists. Makes Undertale look twee by comparison. Buy this game!

I finished it. After reading about it I realized it’s actually a sequel to a freeware game, and events in the original are important to fully comprehending the sequel. I’d recommend seeking the original out first, or at least reading its plot synopsis. That said, the sequel is a masterpiece of psychological exploration - I’m reminded of the Twin Peaks movie of all things, in that surreal imagery and events all revolve around an abuse victim’s state of mind. The tone is different - it’s a very black comedy that can stop the comedy at the drop of a hat with a dramatic turn. It owes its style and tone to the Mother series, but I appreciate what it’s done with them. Excellent!

That actually sounds pretty good. I'll probably get it one day.

My nephew beat me in Mario Kart like 7 times in a row last night, which makes me think that he liked and played the Wii version a lot more than I thought... It's a fun game like always, but I still don't understand how something so kiddy and throwaway can serve as one of the flagship titles for any console.

In Nintendo's defense on this, MarioKart 8 is quite accessible to all gamer types and unfortunately even the shittest player at times can win a race because of some bullshit specials you collect for being in last place.

I sense this has been Nintendo's approach to consumers pretty much since the Wii launch, to reach the super casuals who rarely even play games.

Of course its also the reason I criticise them now. Fair enough I enjoy playing these type of games once in awhile, shit even my mum would play Mario Kart and it was nice doing the 4 player split screen on Christmas day. But I do want more alternative options for this Switch, despite the fact that I did put a fair bit of time into MK8 to win all the titles on each cup and power specs 50cc-150cc.

Did you know there is a 200cc option with MK8, its actually very difficult to play at that speed, certainly not for casuals.

It's probably the most accessible local multiplayer game ever.

I finished BOTW yesterday, gotta say I was a bit underwhelmed. I think hyrule castle illustrates really well how the game's freedom of movement can be quite detrimental. I just swam up some waterfalls on the north side from the moat and a single gust power basically got me rest of the way to the top where I found a convenient rear entrance that went directly into the boss fight. Considering that the place is swarming with guardians and there's a big ass map with lots of underground passages and shit all over the place, it was shockingly easy to bypass all of it. I suppose you could say because I had the Zora armour and the gust power, that's my reward for doing those parts of the game, which technically aren't required. Still, it just completely eradicates any sense of challenge. The fight(s) were pretty easy, too, especially with fully upgraded Fierce Deity armour and a high level defence boost running.

Also, I have to say that I was quite disappointed that botw has the exact same problem as Ocarina of Time in that the game doesn't go on after you defeat Ganon. That always annoyed me as a kid and it annoys me here now. I get it would probably cause issues with no more blood moons (which I assumed were caused by ganon) and no guardians to fight, but I've always found that unsatisfying.

Flaws aside, it's a good game, but also a great example of reviewers overhyping the shit out of a title with some pretty major flaws. Edge crowned it the greatest game of all time. Get fucking real. I suppose I'll visit of a few areas of the game I didn't get to properly explore and do that 5th DLC dungeon, and that'll do me I think.

Have you done Eventide Island? It's a cinch if you do it late, but still a unique section you should check out.

As for Hyrule Castle, I'd already explored it a couple of times before fighting Ganon, so the shortcuts didn't bother me.

Yeah I did do it, probably around mid-game or so. I did like that part, it was a nice shake-up.

Greatest game of all time is dumb, I agree. It’s a fresh take on overworld game design, refining ideas it’s borrowed while adding some of its own. But aside from the problems you mentioned, the central story is embarrassing, void of the humour and weirdness that punctuated the series from Majora through Skyward Sword, going for a regal tone that’s utterly boring and cutscenes that belong in a bad children’s cartoon. It’s strange, because the NPCs and some sidequests ARE funny and well-written, as if they’re written by someone else.

Finally beat Persona 5 at 110+ hours.

I can’t say I didn’t like it having played it for that long. It’s very stylish, the combat and dungeon crawling is fun, the life simulator stuff is fun, I like its quirky sensibility and ironically enjoyed its anime dorkiness and hamminess. This is despite a bloated script with huge lulls in the action, endlessly hammered exposition and a mysterious plot that goes somewhere underwhelming and cliched at the end. It’s good. But it’s bad. It’s enjoyable trash.

And here I thought Nintendo would have learnt their lesson about how awful the optional motion control shrines in botw were, only for them to put a mandatory one (requiring the most precision out of all that I've encountered) into the champion's ballad. Just fuck my shit up famalam. I genuinely may not even finish this dlc because of it, it's just goddamn impossible.

It's not piracy if they aren't even selling it on the system you're playing it with.

I've been playing the 2016 Ratchet & Clank remake. I'd played the Vita port of the original a few years back, so had some memory of the original. This is clearly a remake rather than the developers just reusing the original game's name for a sequel as seems to be the trend these days. There are recreations of many of the levels from the original game in much higher detail.

They've also taken the opportunity to streamline some of the gameplay from the original through the use of contextual inputs. For instance, you can just hit triangle to start hacking a door, rather than having to switch to the hacking tool first.

The story is a big step back from the original though. I'm wondering if they left some stuff out to try and get people to watch the movie released around the same time. For example, here Qwark goes through his whole redemption arc in the course of the game. In the original he was a villain, and his redemption was spread over a number of sequel games. They also seemed to cut off the end of the original game and replace the main bad guy with Nefarious for some reason.

So thumbs up for game play, and thumbs down for story.
